I'm  shifting  to  a  new  house  soon  and  the  terrace  has  a  cement  tank.  The  dimensions  are  3x1x1.5  there  is  direct  sunlight  on  it  for  5-6  hours,  it  has  no  shade  so  I  was  thinking  of  making  a  shade  for  it  as  well.

 Planned  livestock-
 Guppies  and  mollies
 OR
 only  guppies
 OR
 Two  Channa  diplogrammas?  (Most  unlikely)

The  guppies  I'm  catching  them  from  my  outdoor  tank  in  my  native  place.  How  many  guppies  can  I  keep  in  it?  I  want  them  to  breed  as  well.

 Plants-
I  want  to  put  stem  plants  which  I  can  cut  and  replant/share  once  in  a  while.  So  I  was  thinking  cabomba?  (Nyy  better  suggestions)  I  don't  want  water  lilies  or  bulbs.

Also  I  remember  a  friend  of  mine  grew  moss  outdoor.  How  can  I  do  the  same  in  this  tank  without  algae  growth?  (Duckweed  topping?)

 Filteration  and  aeration-
There  is  no  close  electric  supply  to  the  tank.  So  I  have  to  get  an  extension  cable.  What  Filteration  is  preferable?  I  have  a  small  budget  SO  can't  spend  much  on  it.

 Substrate-
I  read  on  an  old  thread  to  use  construction  soil  as  a  topping  and  below  gardening  soil?  Is  this  safe?  I'm  also  gonna  put  small  pots  inside.

Need  help  soon.  Shifting  in  two  weeks.  Thanks  in  advance  Smile

All  the  best  for  your  plan  !!!  Thumb Up
My  suggestion  would  be  stock  up  only  guppies  or  only  mollies.  (Mollies  would  nip  guppies)
Add  some  plants   ,  as  this  would  provide  the  fishes  food  ,  hiding  and  resting  places.
Use  a  simple  powerhead  and  see  if  you  can  DIY  a  filter  of  your  own.  I  did  DIY  mine  and  is  functional  and  was  very  cheap.I  can  give  u  the  details.
Also  u  can  add  a  sponge  filter  ,  dual  help  with  aeration  and  filtaration.
For  shade...make  use  of  the  green  cloth  ...that  is  popularly  used  as  a  shade  for  plants  and  see  if  you  can  tie  them  to  the  nails  on  the  walls.
Let  me  know  if  u  have  any  queries.  Smile

 Thanks  for  the  reply.
Yes  Im  gonna  put  only  guppies.  Since  I  want  them  to  breed  I'm  gonna  put  a  dozen  males  and  about  twenty  females.
The  green  cloth  for  shade  seems  to  be  a  great  idea,  will  do  that.
How  do  I  make  a  diy  filter?  I  know  you  make  it  through  a  bottle.but  how  exactly  and  what  do  ii  require?

What  type  of  plants  can  I  grow  in  it?  (I  want  to  put  plants  which  would  grow  fast  and  I  can  trim  and  share  with  others)

Firstly,  it  will  be  way  too  small  for  the  channa  you  are  planning  to  keep.
However  if  you  do  decide  on  keeping  any  smaller  channa,  you  will  have  to  make  sure  they  dont  jump  out.
Secondly,  since  the  viewing  angle  would  be  from  top,  so  choose  your  fish  accordingly.

As  for  the  moss,  like  you  said,  if  you  can  ensure  that  the  tank  doesn't  get  too  much  of  direct  sunlight,  you  should  be  good  to  go.
I  have  this  concrete  vessel  thing  in  my  balcony,  that  has  moss  growing  all  over  its  side  walls.  Ill  try  to  put  up  a  photo.

Ya  I  decided  to  go  with  guppies.  I  will  post  the  pics  of  it  soon.
I  would  like  to  see  how  the  moss  is  growing  in  yours.  No  algae  problem  right?

Also  forgot  to  ask.  Do  I  have  to  give  it  any  coat  or  something  to  make  it  waterproof  ?  Its  been  used  before  so  I  thought  it  wouldnt  require  any.  Also  it  is  placed  on  a  wall  two  feet  above  the  ground.

 Hi  navneeth,

If  you  select  guppy,  try  collect  some  good  variety.  Like  Endlers,  Cobra,  Black,  Albino  Golden.......Best  of  luck....

One  suggestion  Navneeth  ::  try  and  keep  only  3  -4  pairs  of  good  quality  guppies  of  the  same  type  only..  they  would  breed  like  rabbits  and  populate..
This  would  be  better  than  adding  random  varieties  and  ending  up  with  normal  guppies..  I  have  seen  a  senior  hobbyist  in  Mumbai  keeping  awesome  guppies  in  used  bathtubs  on  terrace  with  lilies  and  ambulia  and  aeration.  He  also  kept  rcs  in  one  of  them,  but  maintainted  the  line  and  not  crossed  it  through..had  stunning  endlers  and  snakeskin  endlers..  Try  and  do  that  if  you  can..
 Post  pics..  Wink

Navneeth...since  it  is  a  3  footer  and  you  have  the  advantage  of  it  being  2  feet  above  the  ground  ,  you  can  DIY  your  own  filter.
Here  is  the  youtube  link  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44Tcfjjh8o0&feature=em-share_video_user.
Since  u  r  in  Bangalore..I  can  be  of  help  to  u...if  u  r  planning  to  go  the  DIY  way  for  sourcing.
You  can  do  the  same  at  a  smaller  scale.  I  extrapolated  since  I  designed  it  for  my  8  footer.
Regarding  the  plants..I  am  not  into  them..sorry  cant  be  of  any  help.
Keep  the  males  and  females  in  a  1:  2  ratio.  Start  off  at  a  smaller  scale  ,  something  like  4  Males  and  8  Females  ,  till  you  stabilize.
Then  you  can  stock  right  depending  on  the  size  of  the  tank.

 Abhis9-
Ashish-  I'm  going  to  put  snakeskin  guppies,  Moscow  red  guppies,  albino  blue  tails,  double  sword  tail  guppies,  flame  tail  guppies,  leopard  guppies  and  few  zebra  danios.  These  guys  have  been  in  a  6x6  tank  in  my  native  place.  They've  been  mixbreeding  into  such  awesome  colors.  Aand  yes  I  know  about  the  sex  ratio  of  guppies.

Vinod-  once  I  shift  I  will  get  in  touch  with  you.

Also  gonna  get  these  amazing  mixbred  guppies  from  my  native  next  month.  I  bet  you  can't  find  these  beauties  in  any  lfs!  Will  post  pics  of  the  cement  tank  and  the  guppies  next  month.  Busy  this  month.  :/  oh  and  I  don't  want  to  keep  endlers,  they  look  boring  from  the  top

P.s  if  anyone  wants  guppies  let  me  know.  I  can  get  you  from  my  native  place.

For  plants  I'm  gonna  put  cabomba.  I  have  a  huge  amount  of  it.  I  thought  of  putting  some  floating  plants.  Can  you  guys  suggest  some  And  where  I  can  get  them?

And  what  would  happen  if  I  don't  put  any  Filteration?  My  friend  has  a  pond  outside  with  no  aeration  or  Filteration  and  its  been  a  year  since  the  water  changed,  but  its  still  fine.  So  I  was  thinking  of  not  even  putting  a  filter.

Is  it  safe  to  use  construction  soil?  I  want  to  put  gardening  soil  under  it,  for  better  plant  growth.

 Suggestions  please  Smile

navneetht:  floating  plants  will  be  best  to  reduce  direct  light  and  best  filtration.  I  have  bucket  with  40-50  guppy  fries,  water  is  covered  with  duckweed  and  frogbit....i  have  crystal  clear  water,  no  deaths,  no  water  change....its  been  a  2  weeks  now  Razz

 few  floating  plants,
Duckweed,  frogbit,  Pistia  there  more  see  what  ever  is  available....

Jjaax-  I  have  duckweed.  Will  make  use  of  it.  :)

Girlcookart-  I  will  put  the  pics  up  of  the  tank  next  month  and  the  guppies  after  that.  Smile
Right  now  I'm  still  planning  it  properly.

Cabomba  are  not  a  good  idea  for  outdoor  tanks,  their  fine  leaves  trap  too  much  algae  and  they  start  looking  weird.
Amazons  are  a  good  plants  in  out  door  tanks,  keep  them  in  large  pots,  half  with  garden  soil  and  half  with  gravel.
Many  varieties  grow  out  of  water  and  are  very  nice  to  look  at

Well  which  exact  plants  should  I  put?  I  didnt  think  about  algae  on  plants.  I  don't  have  a  big  budget.  Have  enough  to  make  a  shade,  garden  soil,  filter  and  a  bit  for  plants.
