hi  everybody,  finally  setup  my  cichlid  tank  its  a  48  *  18  *  24  tank  with  river  sand  (bigger  grains  2-4mm)  and  lots  of  rocks  with  an  internal  filter  (1200  LPH  )for  now.  Planning  to  add  a  black  BG  and  a  DIY  hood  made  out  of  plywood  (with  my  carpenter's  help  of  course!).  Help  required  for  three  critical  steps:
 1.  what  fish  to  stock  in  it  and  how  many?
 2.  which  lighting  and  what  wattage?  (ive  put  in  two  island  of  controsoil  for  adding  plants,  so  light  suggestions  keeping  plants  in  mind  too)
 3.  which  plants  to  keep  in  the  tank  (  considering  that  its  my  first  attempt  with  a  planted  setup)

PS:  water  is  hard  in  my  area  and  im  using  bore  water  in  my  tank  so  i  guess  it  should  be  ok.

You  cannot  have  a  planted  tank  with  cichlids,  they  are  diggers  by  nature  and  do  not  go  along  well  with  plants.
Some  exceptions  are  Angel,  Discus,  Ram,  Kribensis.
Make  it  a  pure  Cichlid  tank,  you  can  start  with  Lake  Malawi  cichlids,  they  are  colourfull,  reasonably  hardy  and  look  good.

 +  1  with  Sandeep.
Your  setup  is  perfect  for  a  Malwai  Cichlid  tank.
You  have  lots  of  rocks  ,  which  make  it  an  excellent  place  for  hiding  and  breeding.  They  adjust  just  well  with  a  notch  high  PH.

Make  the  background  black...looks  more  beatiful...

Also  arrange  the  rocks  bit  higher  middle  or  any  one  side  .......tank  looks  more  better.......

You  need  to  have  a  background.  The  steps  at  the  back  is  distracting  the  view  of  the  tank.

Is  your  front  glass  taller  than  the  side  glasses?

 +1  Sandeep  &  Shelly.

Your  front  glass  look  2-3"  taller  than  the  sides.
You  can't  have  Plants  &  Cichlids  in  the  same  tank  as  you  will  be  wasting  the  money  spent  on  buying  some  valuable  plants,  just  to  get  teared  down  by  the  cichlids.
Also,  just  remove  the  Contro  soil  so  that  you  can  use  it  in  some  other  tanks.  And  make  a  black  background  as  abhis  said.

Better  make  yourself  sure  once  again,  of  what  tank  you  wanted  to  keep  -  cichlids  tank  or  a  planted  tank!!!  :thumb:

 Edited:
I  forgot  to  add  one  more...  I  think  it  would  look  much  better  if  you  use  a  Single  type  of  rock  in  your  tank  rather  than  using  two  types  of  rocks,  as  you  have  done  now...

Black  background  is  on  the  cards..I  was  a  bit  apprehensive  aboutmaking  a  bigger  stack  of  rocks  for  fear  of  their  toppling!

Background  coming  up..  yup  the  front  and  back  glass  are  around  1  inch  higher  than  the  side  walls,  purely  asthetic  reasons..

If  I  remove  the  contro  soil  now  then  how  do  I  store  it?  I  mean  its  been  soaking  for  more  than  a  day  now..can  I  just  dry  it  I  sunlight  or  oven  and  itll  be  good  as  new?

If  only  I  could  decide  convincingly  life  would  be  so  much  easier..had  the  tank  lying  for  more  than  a  month  while  I  brooded  over  one  setup  or  othr..from  goldies  to  guppies  to  full  planted  with  cardinals  to  cichlids..been  surfing  the  net  for  inspiration.  ..finaly  decided  to  go  for  it..now  there's  complications.  hehehe

Make  sure  you  stack  up  the  rocks  such  a  way  that  there  are  even  gaps  everywhere.
Please  refer  to  the  youtube  link  below  for  a  sample....hope  this  helps.
 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3GVA8epNKh0
Reason  for  rocks  and  gaps  is  they  can  get  nippy  and  are  good  stealth  attackers.  Punch
Have  a  good  mixture  of  colors  and  research  a  bit  on  them  ,  before  you  begin  stocking.
All  the  very  best   Thumbs Up

 Ceaser,
You  can  have  plants  in  a  cichlids  setup..!  but  your  selection  of  cichlids  be  non  herbivorous..
If  you  have  have  non  herbivorous  cichlids  that  don't  dig  around  then  you  can  use  hard  rooted  plants  like  amazons,  vallisnerias  or  even  some  crypts..
In  case  you  have  diggers(  non  herbivorous)..You  can  use  plants  which  can  be  tied  up  with  driftwood  or  on  stones..such  as  java  ferns  (all  possible  varieties)  and  anubias..
