Hello,
I am relatively a new hobbyist. Everything was going fine until I observed a few plants in my tank. I realized plants like Cabomba come out of the substrate but their roots are intact to the ground...
Another thing is with my water sprite. Earlier, they were all fine and growing well, I had to like re-plant them but now they hardly grow. Also, the roots are melting...
Why is this happening?
FYI- L= 24 inches (61cms) x B= 11.6 inches (30cms) x H= 9 inches (23cms)
I have two lighting 36w each but I switch on one light at a time (for 6/8 hours)
I use 1ml flourish excel thrice a week
Ferropol 5ml every 2 weeks
Pics attached
Thanks
ajay |

I don't see any plant doing well there..
They are suffering from nutrition deficiencies.. What substrate are you using..?
Problem is, when a new plant is bought and planted.. it starts to grow initially using the stored food in the plants itself.
So if there is no nutrition to make food during this period, they will start deteriorating.. and eventually die..
so start dosing ferts immediately.. |

Plants need a fertile substrate to grow, your substrate particles are too big and do not seem to have any nutrient.
Check out the planted tank forum for more information. |

Sandeep : You are not entirely correct. Plants dont NEED a fertile substrate to grow but they BENEFIT from a fertile substrate.
Ajay: Add 1ml Excel DAILY. Also start DIY Yeast CO2. Your liquid fert dosing is too low and large gap is there. See the dosage on the bottle. Calculate for your size tank. DOUBLE or TRIPLE it and divide the dose by 7 and dose that daily. This prevents fluctuating fert levels which stress out the plants |

There's no dosage instruction on the bottle...The shopkeeper told me to put every fortnight. So maybe, 5ml=15days, 1 day=?
I don't know much about CO2 dosage, will look up for yeast CO2
Thanks! |

Mortis I believe plants cant take up all the nutrients they need form the liquid ferts.
They need fertile substrate as well, since a major part of the nutrients they take from the roots.
I have never seen plants in the wild growing in inert areas instead most of them grow at areas where the base is that murky thing with loads of nutrients. In the same river there will be places where there is sandy substrate with no plants.
But it is a topic we need to discuss
I am starting a new thread for this here
http://indianaquariumhobbyist.com/community/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=327586#327586
For agarwals issue he is using that crushed red laterite which is rich in Iron.
SO as per me you should have had a nutrient base like oceanfree plant base or the JBL counter part or a very little of vermicompost.
Also before doing any substrate change add liquid fertilizers and see.(BTW liquid ferts is a must) |

Jabba, Like I said a fertile substrate, especially in the case of heavy root feeders like crypts but it is definitely not essential.
So many of us use river sand which is almost inert and grow plants well with only liquid ferts and CO2.
The example you have given of the river is interesting but in a natural environment there are too many factors involved so you cannot always make an accurate assumption based on that. However you can come to a better conclusion by taking a planted aquarium into consideration which is an artificial environment and we have a greater control over parameters.
Read up on Foliar feeding and you will see that even land plants prefer uptaking nutrients from their leaves and the plants that have fertilizers sprayed on them do much better than those that have not.
I would say that the most important nutrient is CO2. Everything else is secondary
Ajay : I guess you can add 0.5 - 1ml DAILY without any issues.Add 1ml Excel daily also. Keep a watch and report back |

Mortis,
Back to the grind. Again facing the same problems. Now someone told me to not use Seachem everyday. They have an adverse effect on fish and PLANTS as well.
My guppies at the surface (could be for food) and water sprite stems are melting....
I read a few articles on the side-effects of seachem flourish excel and they are similar to mine...
What would you suggest?
PS. Since my plants are not doing good, shall I use airstone now? |

Ajay
Guppies are top feeders so thats their area of operation
Its summer now everything will start melting
What your tank temperature ? Mine is 33.
Reduce your dosing.....Dont dose in excess and dose Seachem alternate days |

Its possibly due to the temperature and bad quality of water we are getting nowadays.
After my last water change even my fish are very restless and skittish. Shrimp have gone into hiding. Please state what your dosing and tank conditions are now. Is your filter on 24/7 ? |

Pio, my temp. is around 29/30. The tank is in my room, so the AC brings the temp down to 25 every night.
The juvenile guppies have become lethargic since my last water change...
Mortis, yes, I never switch it off. 1ml seachem daily, 5ml ferropol every week |

One of these days last week was so hot.
I lost 2 Endlers, 1 Threadfin and 1 Endler Guppy
Run an oxygen air stone in that tank especially at night
I think I'll also run one in mine |
