I  have  heard  of  people  using  cuttle  fish  bone  to  clean  the  glass.  And  it  cleans  well.  Only  problem  that  I  see  is  procuring  them.  If  you  are  living  near  sea  shore,  then  you  can  collect  plenty  of  them.  Otherwise,  its  pretty  difficult  to  source.

Cuttle  fish  bone  is  rich  is  calcium  and  I  had  even  seen  them  put  in  birds  cage  (love  brids  -  called  locally).

@garothmaan:  Unfortunately  i  dont  have  a  picture   now.
just  break  Cuttlefish  bone  into  a  small  piece(approximate  2x2  inch  piece)  and  you  can  gently  press  the  glass  with  it  and  wipe  it  in  the  area  in  the  glass  where  you  need  to  clean(you  can  see  small  shaving  set  blade  like  area  is  there  in  the  bone.  use  that  area  to  wipe).
I  can  post  pictures  on  this  weekend  only  .Just  try  it  out  .
Believe  me  ...  it  will  be  the  best  one  among  these  suggestions  Smile

Wow!  We  see  so  much  of  those  on  the  beaches  here  in  Chennai.  Specially  near  fishing  hamlets  where  the  fisherfolk  discard  them  from  their  nets.

Can't  able  to  source  cuttlefish  bone  in  Mumbai...  Tried  in  Crawford  market  too...  Is  Lemon  works  as  an  alternate  for  Vinegar.?

Hence,  I  have  Shrimps  in  my  tank.   Is  it  ok  to  use  Lemon.?

Help  me  out,  I  use  bore-well  water.  Never  days  more  Silica  present.   I  tried  with  blade  as  it  gives   scratches.   Sad

In  Bangalore,  please  do  ask  around  in  Grandhige  shops.
It(cuttlefish  bone)  is  called  as  "samudra  nore"  -or-  "samudra  naalige"

literally  meaning  sea  froth  -or-  sea  tongue.

Vinegar  works,  but  has  limited  application,  I  am  comfortable  with  the  putty  strip-  if  you  use  it  remember  to  make  it  blunt.

Percy  you  will  get  plenty  of  cuttle  fish  bone,  probably  for  free  if  you  go  to  Sassoon  docks  and  ask  the  fisher  people.  I  have  collected  3-4  kilos  of  it  for  free  few  years  ago  for  experimental  purposes

Ganesaa:  Lime  &  vinegar  will  not  have  the  same  effect  on  the  deposits.  while  lime  contains  citric  acid,  vinegar  is  ascetic  acid.  Citric  acid  itself  will  leave  stains  on  glass.  Vinegar  has  been  used  as  a  cleaning  agent  in  many  applications,  at  home  &  even  in  industry.  So  please  use  vinegar.

And  the  scaling  you  see  on  the  glass  is  not  silica.  These  are  calcium  deposits.  Do  not  get  confused.  Also,  someone  has  previously  demonstrated  the  use  of  the  putty  strip.  While  a  putty  strip  is  a  decent  tool  to  use,  those  pictures  show  the  removal  of  algae  from  the  tank  &  not  salt  deposits.  So  please  keep  that  in  mind.  The  use  of  vinegar  also  warrants  scrubbing.  But  it  makes  it  easier.  You  cannot  expect  to  put  vinegar  and  see  the  scaling  just  vanish.  You  still  have  to  scrub,  but  much  less.

Nirant,  I  have  a  small  house  in  an  expensive  city.  2  and  3  kilos  will  cost  space  if  not.  Peck  Little  fella...thanks.

Scraping  is  ultimately  the  last  option,  wether  it  be  diatomes  or  algae  or  salt  etc.

It's  better  not  to  use  vinegar.
