 Dear  Members,
 Request  for  clearing  my  doubt.
Can  I  use  Sea  sand  over  controsoil  just  a  layer  of  5mm  to  10mm.
 1)  for  decoration  purpose?
 2)  instead  of  river  sand  for  plants?

 Thank  You.

 Janardhanam  Sir,
I  have  been  told  that  sea  sand  cannot  be  used  for  freshwater  tanks.  But  I  did  read  somewhere  (don't  remember)  that  it  can  be  used,  but  requires  some  lengthy  &  cumbersome  processing.  I  personally  don't  think  its  worth  going  through  all  that  trouble  (and  the  money  also,  I  guess).

River  sand  &  sea  sand  have  very  different  properties.  Sea  sand  is  also  not  used  in  construction.

 +1  with  Athreyan......

Also  If  you  use  a  finer  sand(fine  river  sand  or  say  beach  sand)  over  coarse  substrate  like  contro.
Eventually  contor  pebbles  will  come  to  top.  just  like  in  that  moral  story  where  a  teacher  fills  a  glass  with  pebbles  first  then  sand  and  then  water   Chuckle  ....

Your  pH  can  increase  drastically.  Sea  water  is  close  to  8.3  which  may  not  be  good  for  your  plants/fishes  depending  on  the  type  you  got.  You  will  have  to  rinse  them  like  mad  to  prevent  this  from  happening,  by  getting  rid  of  all  the  pH  buffers/salt  dissolved  in  the  sand.

Second,  beaches  are  so  dirty  that  you  risk  pathogens  getting  to  your  tank.  Some  boil  the  sand  in  water  and  use  it.

Third,  the  sand  will  start  to  compact  over  a  period  of  time  and  accumulate  hydrogen  sulphide  pockets  .

Fourth,  sea  sand  looks  disgusting  in  a  good  tank.Much  of  the  Indian  coastline  is  covered  with  blackish  sea  sand.  Very  few  places  have  pure  white  sand.  They  look  creamish  when  dry.  But  when  wet,  they  look  dark.

Fifth,  sand  +  controsoil  ---  not  sure  if  that  would  look  good,  unless  you  are  making  something  like  a  pathway....  I  did  the  same  mistake  when  I  first  did  it(using  river  sand).  It  looked  terrible  and  I  had  to  throw  all  the  sand  away  later.

So  I  would  stay  away  from  them.  Better  use  river  sand.

 Hi  Athreyan,  Jabba  and  cichlid_lover

Thank  You  very  much  for  the  detailed  report.

Actually  I  want  to  do  something  like  Jabba's  latest  hardscape  for  the  front  portion  of  the  aquarium.   Dropped.

 Thanks  once  again.

The  sand  I  have  used  is  fine  sand  from  river....  I  had  to  buy  it  since  I  was  lazy.
I  could  have  collected  them  from  Sagar  but  transporting  and  all  will  be  a  fuss.

You  can  use  construction  sand  used  for  plastering  but  it  will  have  lot  of  dirt.
Though  they  are  also  collected  from  river  .  but  When  you  collect  for  yourself  you  can  choose  the  place  where  there  is  lot  of  water  flow. But  Sand  mining  is  illegal  Chuckle  .
If  you  are  anyway  going  to  borrow  from  a  construction  site  take  the  top  layer  of  the  sand  dune.  That  layer  will  be  already  washed  by  the  rain  and  the  dirt  would  have  gone  down.  Also  choose  a  place  where  they  have  stocked  that  sand  dune  for  some  time  In  that  way  it  have  had  more  rain.

I  know  all  these  where  just  common  sense  but  I  thought  of  telling  it  when  it  hit  my  mind  Chuckle  .

If  you  are  collecting  the  sand  from  a  construction  site,  then  sieve  the  sand  with  fine  mesh.  Choose  the  mesh  depending  upon  the  size  of  granules  that  you  need  to  put  in  your  aquarium.  Once  sieved,  you  will  have  to  wash  it  thoroughly.  River  sand  is  rich  in  silicates  and  hence  if  not  washed  properly,  you  might  enf  up  in  having  diatom  algae.  So  make  sure  that  you  wash  it  properly.

 HiShelly,
I  have  already  faced  a  lot  of  problems  with  river  sand,  and  the  reasons  were  not  known  till  today.   Thank  You  for  the  information  Shelly  (River  sand  is  rich  in  silicates).
