hi
here iam on the way to make few planted tanks in a 3 side open area of my home
sit out in first floor
with diy substrate covered with some ready available cheap items from local shops
PLANT AREA AND WHITE SAND IS SEPARATED WITH A PVC STRIP
and covered with local china made substrate
plants are placed in a media
SNAP @ NIGHT
lights used is T5 3 nos
tank size 5 feet
plants : common stem hygrophilla variegated and sagitaria
Loved it .....Just as I commented on FB cow dung was not a good idea
I have been using same mix in my out door planting tank
cow dung is best for crypts
in same cistern i tested with different mix of substrates in disposable glass
only for the first few days water turns little cloudy.
I used the dung which is 6 month+ old dried and slightly washed it b4 mixing
let me see what happens in this tank
here I have 3 more 3 feet tank in the same shelf f. they are also under work in progress
shall try with out dung mix in next tank
thanks

That sounds promising..... The major villan in cow dung as per me is the urine in it.
So when you dry it for the period you said and with the washing I think the urine part will be taken care of.
Now I think I understand why this is followed in our farm. My dad used to say that the fresh dung will create lot of heat and will destroy the plant. Also after this process the cow dung retains the nutrients for longer time. Man I need to listen to my dad more carefully now
Need to try this way..... BTW I have a question.
1. You just washed the surface of the dried dung OR you powdered it and then sunk in water and drained it?
2 Did you take only the dung or the mixture of dung with Hay and leafs(Which is usually the output in the dairy)?
If it works in a tank it would be nice...... These things are doable for me as well, at my farm in Sagar.
But will have to wait for a vacation.
