Need  recommendation  for  a  good  air  pump  for  my  3ft  tank  (130  litre).   It  should  be  quiet  /  silent.....

Primarily  getting  an  air  pump  for  the  following  2  reasons

 1.   White  film  (scum)  appearing  on  the  water  surface  after  2  days  from  water  change.  So  need  some  surface  agitation.
 2.   CO2  is  running  24/7

 Thanks

I'm  not  sure  you'll  get  a  silent  air  pump.  These  pumps  work  on  electro-magnets  that  move  a  rubber  diaphragm  in  a  vibrating  rhythm.  So  getting  them  to  be  silent  isn't  really  an  option.  That  vibrating  noise  will  be  present.  I  place  my  air  pumps  on  a  piece  of  sponge.  This  reduces  the  noise  considerably,  but  some  noise  is  still  there.  Even  if  you  don't  hear  a  noise  when  you  buy  an  air  pump,  it  will  start  becoming  noisy  in  a  few  days.

As  for  brands,  I  really  don't  know  of  any  brand.  You  get  a  lot  of  these  chinese  ones  that  seem  to  work  well.  I  have  two  of  different  'brands'.  They've  been  working  without  trouble  for  the  past  few  years.  Infact,  I  still  use  one  in  a  UGF...  old  school,  I  know.   Drinking

 +1  athreyan

Use  his  method  or  hang  it.
The  white  line  forming  is  because  of  salt.  I  use  a  sponge  filter  and  even  then  there's  a  salt  line   So  air  pump  really  won't  help   in  reducing  the  salt  llIning.  Just  use  a  cuttlebone  or  bone  to  scrub  it  out

@Joealex:  check  for  availability  of  those...  never  seen  them  in  Chennai.  But  hailea  is  a  huge  brand  &  my  guess  is  they  will  be  expensive.  A  couple  of  those  models  there  talk  about  noise  muffling.  So  maybe  you  can  look  at  those.

@Navneeth:  I  think  he  is  talking  about  the  bio-film  at  the  surface,  not  the  salt  line.

I'm  guessing  you'll  run  the  air  pump  only  at  nights  (lights  out).  running  it  24/7  will  cause  CO2  wastage.  I'm  sure  you've  thought  of  that;  just  pointing  it  out.

 navneethtk

White  film/scum  is  on  the  water  surface  (it  is  greyish  white,  thin).   I  didn't  mean  the  salt  deposit  on  the  tank  walls.   I  just  edited  my  posting  to  make  it  clear.   Sorry.

Please  see  this  blog  -  http://www.aquariumalgae.blogspot.in/2007/06/as-we-can-see-in-this-article-algae.html   This  guy  has  fixed  it  just  using  air  pump.

Thanks  Athreyan.  Have  seen  Hailea  air  pumps  in  SIA  T  Nagar.   Will  check  it  out  tomorrow.

Yes,  will  switch  on  air  pump  only  during  nights.   Have  to  do  this  manually  as  I  just  have  one  mechanical  timer  for  lights.     (by  the  way   that  mechanical  timer  is  a  Edit...  everyday  I  need  to  set  the  time  right  as  it  runs  at  least  30mins  behind)

I  would  recommend  a  HOB  filter.  It  is  silent  and  will  give  you  good  circulation  through  the  tank.  IMO  best  bet  for  a  planted  setup.

Same  problem  I  had.   As  advised  by  Mr.  Jaiby,  I  used  Boyu  pump  tiny  one  i.e,  last  which  cost  around  Rs.3xx.   and  solved  the  problem.
