 Hi,

I  have  been  trying  to  grow  this  in  my  tank  for  two  time  and  still  failing  to  grow  them.  The  plant  tends  to  stop  growing  and  the  leaves  tends  to  lose  its  color  and  change  to  dark  pale  red.

 Tanks  specs:

 Size:  36"L  x  24"W  x  18"H
 CO2:  Diffuser  -  2  bps
 Fertilizing:  EI  method
Water  change:  Weekly  once  50%  (Sunday)
Water:  Ground  water  -  800~  ppm

Is  anyone  having  this  plant  in  their  tank?  Do  throw  some  light  on  this  issue..

Pump  up  the  Co2  and  increasing  the  nitrates  seemed  to  work  for  me.

I  have  the  Rotala  Macrandra  not  the  mini  and  the  growth  seems  to  be  fast  in  my  tank  but  the  color  seems  to  be  a  problem   ,.  no  more  red...  it  changing  to  green  ,...  I'm  dosing  same  EI  method  and  high  CO2.
It  took  just  a  week  for  these  plants  to  take  off,..  how  did  u  source  it  ?  submerged  or  emerged?  I  guess  tht  defines  the  growth.

Have  the  same  issue.   Received  25  stems  in  a  great  condition.  But  after  planting,  growth  seems  to  be  stunted  and  lost  the  deep  red  color.  Now  after  5  weeks,   all  the  leaves  are  in  greenish/yellowish  red  color  and  doesn't  seem  to  grow  at  all.   This  is  my  second  failed  attempt  with  Mini  Red.

Have  Rotala  Macrandra  Red  (Regular)  as  well  which  is  healthy,  lush  and  in  excellent  condition.  Also  other  plants  in  my  tank  are  in  good  condition  and  growing  very  fast.

 Mine  is  a  3ft  aquarium  /  130  L
CO2  diffused  using  external  diffuser.     24x7
 Light  156w  (4  x  39w)
Using  RO  water  with  15-20%  tap  water  with  800ppm.
 Chiller  -  temp  26-27  degrees
Using  combination  of   DIY  PPS  macro  and  Seachem  Flourish  for  Micro.
 WC   25%  every  week.

Assuming  the  plant  you're  talking  about  is-  Rotala  mini  "Butterfly".
Its  nothing  but  a  variegated  variety  of  normal  Rotala  macandra.  Its  not  an  individual  specie.
Its  a  very  demanding  plant  and  needs  pretty  much  everything.  Good  flow,  good  CO2  (in  the  range  of  30s),  very  high  light  (in  low  light  it'll  again  become  normal  Rotala  macandra  with  green  big  fat  leaves  and  red  stem.  Believe  me  I've  seen  that  happening),  Good  dosing  regime.
It  took  some  time  to  get  established  in  the  tank  but  now  it  grows  like  weed.

 Theres  your  culprit.

If  thats  TDS,  its  way  too  high  for  any  plants  in  general.

Rotalas  in  general  love  soft  water,  mini  macrandra  and  macrandra  red  in  particular  are  demanding  in  terms  of  that.

I  mixed  RO  water  and  maintained  it  around  200-300ppm  and  it  has  grown  well  for  me.

Thanks  to  all  for  the  reply.

My  current  TDS  of  the  water  in  the  tank  is  842  ppm.

I  had  grown  HC  cuba  in  this  ppm  pretty  well.  There  were  couple  of  plants  that  had/are  not  growing  in  my  tank.  Below  are  those:

 >  Rotala  Macrandra  Mini  Red
 >  Tonina  Fluviatilis
 >  Eriocaulon  Breviscapum

 @  Sandeep

 Tank  capacity:  67  Gallon
 Light:  55Watts  PLL  x  4  Nos  =  220  Watts
Dosing  Method:   Macro:  EI  Method  (Mix  contains  KH2PO4  &  KNO3)
                                     Micro:  CSM+B

Both  macro  and  micro  are  in  solution  form  and  dosed  in  alternate  days.  Sunday  no  dosing  and  change  50%  water  (Every  Sunday).

 @  Sumer

Yes.  You  are  referring  to  the  same  plant.

As  I  mentioned  before,  borewell/ground  water  is  not  at  all  suitable  for  planted  tanks.  Get  your  TDS  down  to  200ppm,  theres  no  other  way  you  can  grow  soft  water  plants.
Another  mistake  we  do  is,  we  add  GH  booster/seachem  equilibrium.  These  products  are  meant  to  be  used  in  0  hardness  water(Pure  RO).  Even  if  you  are  dosing  EI  and  including  GH  booster,  take  it  out  from  dosing  regime.

When  you  fill  the  tank  up,  TDS  should  be  around  200.  With  dosing  it  eventually  goes  over  300-400  by  the  time  of  next  water  change.

 @  Hamza,

I  agree  to  your  point.  Let  me  try  bringing  down  the  hardness  of  my  tank  water.  Bringing  down  the  tds  of  235  lts  of  water  is  quite  difficult.  Not  an  easy  task.
The  aqua  guard  purifier  that  I  have  in  my  home  have  only  8lts  of  capacity.  Would  have  to  store  the  water  in  a  big  container  and  then  try  changing  the  water  stage  by  stage  to  bring  down  the  tds.

Shelly,  I  already  do  it,  but  get  a  TDS  meter,  GH,  Kh  testing  kit.
My  source  water  has  hardness  of  1300,  Gh  530.
I  have  bought  it  down  to  TDS  700,  GH  300.

This  is  Tom  Barr's  take  on  it.   Smile

I  suppose  if  you  have  very  low  KH  and  stopped  dosing  for  a  few  months,  it  will  redden  up  some.
That's  a  stressed  state.   It'll  still  grow  like  that,  but  not  like  it  does  green.
Problem  is,  the  other  plants  also  stop  growing.

When  you  stress  it,  then  it  turns  red.
But  everything  else  will  hardly  grow  as  well.
