 Hi  Guys,

have  recently  acquired  a  new  tank  of  (36Lx18wx24H)

&  am  planning  a  setup  of  some  Vallisneria,  &  primarily  Java  fern  on  Drift  wood,  white  sand  as  substrate.

 need  your  expert  advices  with

Lighting  =  (was  thinking  of  18w,or  32w  CFL  or  Phillips  PLL  as  have  read  that  Java  fern  doesn;t  need  much  light

 Fert  :  ?

Plant  :  is  it  better  to  tie  the  java  fern  on  driftwood  or  on  a  rock  ?
&  for  Vallisneria  ,should  i  plant  in  a  small  pot  filled  with  contrasoil  or  put  a  layer  of  the  soil  under  the  white  soil  for  it.

Fishes  :  cardinals  ,neons  &  Congo  Tetra's  ,(would  it  be  compatible)  ?

 Thanks  in  advance

I  think  the  lighting  must  be  at  least  32X2  or  else  the  vallisnerias  will  vanish  or..
And  as  for  the  substrate,  I  have  had  success  with  just  river  sand  for  Vallisneria..  so  no  need  to  add  any  thing  underneath.
Ferns  do  better  when  they  are  attached  to  driftwood  compared  to  rock,  but  that  difference  would  be  marginal.
Neons  and  cardinals  will  be  Ok,  but  not  sure  of  Congo  tetras..  they  kind  of  get  big  compared  to  Neons  and  Cardinals.
And  I  don't  think  you  need  to  fertilize  the  setup  if  you  plan  to  keep  only  these  plants.

1-  You  can  put  one  36W  PLL  with  proper  reflector  (for  the  plants  you  have  mentioned).
 2-  Fert:  Not  required
3-  It  would  be  good  if  you  can  add  a  base  layer  of  Contro  soil  or  ADA  amazonia.  These  substrate  will  control  your  pH  as  well  and  help  the  plants  to  settle  in  the  initial  period  of  your  setup.
4-  Better  to  get  some  driftwoods  and  tie  the  fearns  into  it.
5-  Cardinal  and  neon  would  be  good  but  I  will  suggest  go  for  a  bunch  of  cardinal.
6-  You  can  add  some  shrimps  as  well.

+1  with  nidhi......The  congo  tetras  you  get  now  a  days  are  not  as  colour  ful  as  they  appear  in  the  pictures.
How  about  some  barbs  like  odessa  barb  or  melon  barbs  or  some  rainbows

River  in  Bangalore..?  buying  drifts  from  hobbyist  or  from  shops  will  be  much  cheaper.
Vallis  will  be  good  covering  for  shrimps,  just  plant  in  good  numbers  initially.
