 Hi  All,

A  friend  of  mine  is  setting  up  a  Chichlid  tank.  Tank  Dimensions  :  72"  x  20"  x  24",   Filtration:  Yet  to  decided,   Water  Source:  Borewell

I  was  pretty  fascinated  by  Dwarf  Mbuna,  a  mixed  species  tank  is  on  my  mind.  Although  i  have  been  in  this  hobby  for  many  years,  i  am  a  novice  when  it  comes  to  African  Chiclids.  Been  reading  a  lot  these  days.  Smile   Wanted  to  know  your  inputs  on  stock  selection,  numbers,  availability  etc.

Any  other  suggestions  are  most  welcome.

That's  a  good  sized  tank.  Have  plenty  of  rock  work.

I'm  not  sure  what  species  are  currently  available.  If  you  want  to  have  mbuna's  ,  most  of  them  can  be   though  there  will  be  some  initial  aggression.

About  15-20  fishes  can  be  accommodated  in  that  tank.

If  you  let  us  know  what  specific  fishes  you  have  in  mind,  perhaps  suggestions  will  follow

Don  forget  to  feed  them,  feed  them  regularly.  If  u  miss  they  might  kill  each  other  ,  as  long  as  you  feed  them  well  and  there  are  lotts  of  hiding  areas,  even  a  little  over  stocking  wont  be  a  problem.  And  prepare  for  lotts  of  rework  in  your  tank  cos  they  love  to  move  stuff  around.  Best  would  be  to  have  lotts  of  rockwork  on  substrate  usually  sand.

 Thank  you  Vyas,  avip04.

Well  from  my  internet  search  these  varieties  were  categorized  as  beginners  fish.  Confused

 1)  Rusty  Chichlid  -  Iodotroheus  sprengerae
 2)  Yellow  Lab  -  Labidochromis  caeruleus
 3)  Cobalt  Zebra  -  Metriaclima  callainos
 4)  Red  Zebra  -  Metriaclima  estherae
 5)  Yellow  Tail-  Acei   Pseudotropheus  sp.  "Acei"
 6)  Albino  Pindani  -  Pseudotropheus  scocolfi
 7)  Saulosi  -  Pseudotropheus  saulosi
Cool  Afra  Edwardi  -  Cynotilapia  afra  (Cobue)
 9)  Fuelleborni  Chiclid  OB  -  Labeotropheus  fuelleborni  OB
 10)  Ngara  White  Tail  -  Pseudotropheus  sp.  "Acei"  (Ngara)

I  kind  of  am  ok  with  the  first  5  in  the  list.  The  question  is  can  they  be  sourced  locally.  People  who  have  kept  them  before  do  share  your  experience  keeing  then,   on  their  compatabilty,  numbers  for  the  above  mentioned  tank  size  etc.

If  these  are  not  available  do  let  me  know  the  alternatives  too.

I  hope  i  am  asking  the  right  questions.

I  think  thats  a  huge  tank  for  Mabunas.  Many  experts  suggest
 1.  overstocking  as  it  will  reduce  aggression.  No  one  fish  will  be  targetted
 2.  Lot  of  hiding  spots,  So  weeker  guys  can  hide  and  take  refuge
 3.  For  that  size  tank  you  need  good  filtration.  Sump  is  the  best.  Canister  next.

That  is  a  good  sized  tank.   Yellow  labs  and  red  zebras  can  very  easily  crossbreed.   Also,  avoid  fishes  with  similar  stripes.   Also  I  haven't  seen  much  of  good  quality  cichlids  dwarf  mbunas  around  (maybe  I  haven't  found  the  right  place  yet).   I  do  keep  Dems  and  yellow  labs  together  in  my  4  feet  tank.   If  you  are  not  stuck  with  mbunas  ,  you  can  take  a  look  at  tropheus  (a  colony)  and  see  if  it  fits  your  expectations.

 Cheers
 Kiran

Thank  you  Sanjay.  Will  keep  it  in  mind.

Kiran,  thanks  for  the  pointers.  No  real  fixation  to  Mbunas.  I  just  liked  the  fact  that  they  are  lively,  colorful,  do  not  grow  large,  a  mix  of  those  gives  you  variety  to  look  at.  Smile

Tropheus  could  be  fineky  eaters,  from  what  i  heard.  I  may  be  wrong  here.

Well  i  am  open  to  suggestions  from  all  chichlid  keepers.  Thats  the  whole  purpose  of  this  thread.

species  selection  wont  be  a  problem  in  such  a  big  tank....but  first  thing...  have  u  checked  the  ph...if  the  water  is  hard  then  every  thing  shud  go  fine
 1.sex  ratio  should  be  correct
2.decice  on  mbunas  or  peacocks/haps(dnt  mix  them)
3.check  whose  diet  will  u  be  able  to  cater  to  then  decide

Borwell  water  in  Bangalore  is  mostly  hard.  Would  i  need  any  sort  of  additives?

Thank  you  friends  for  you  suggestions.  Will  stick  to  either  mbunas  or  peacocks/haps.  Let  us  see  what  is  available.
