 Hi,
This  tank  in  discussion  is  a  bare  bottom  Quarantine  tank  with  dimensions  of  24x18x15  inches  placed  by  the  window  without  any  addition  lighting.  It  runs  on  a  sponge  filter  and  taiyo  internal  filter.

From  my  main  tank  i  had  a  few  fish  which  started  to  breed  so  now  this  tank  has  become  a  pool  for  frys.  I  wanted  to  try  my  hands  on  having  a  few  aquatic  plans  and  found  that  Java  Fren  and  Anubias  are  good  for  a  start,  these  plants  have  been  in  the  tank  for  over  2  months  now.

The  query  is  wrt  images  below;  on  them  you  can  see  some  brown  spots  /  layers  on  the  leaves.  I  am  not  sure  if  they  are  algae,  when  i  try  to  remove  it  by  running  my  fingers  over  the  leaves  it  seems  like  fine  particle  of  dust  -  like  a  powdery  substance.

I  do  regular  water  change  of  50%  every  week  and  add  10ml  of  Seachem  Florish  excel  every  2  days.  Within  a  couple  of  days  of  water  change  i  see  this  brown  stuff  settle  back  on  the  leaves.  Could  someone  pl  be  able  to  identify  what  could  be  the  reason  for  these  and  how  could  i  fix  it?

the  brown  stuff  is  diatom  algae.
i  guess  direct  sunlight  can  be  the  main  reason.
try  blacking  out  the  tank  .
and  performing  regular  water  changes.try  to  remove  them  manually  if  possible.
 Regards,
 Ashwin  Mathew.  Smile

Also  have  a  decent  water  flow  in  the  tank.....of  course  there  will  be  wrong  impact  keeping  plants  near  direct  sunlight  but  the  reasonable  flow  will  help

Hi  Srinath,  Do  you  see  any  pin  holes  in  old  leaves  ?  especially  in  Java  fern.  How's  the  growth  on  the  plants  ?  Do  you  dose  fertilizers  ?

Thank  you  all  for  your  replies  -

@AshwinMathew,  since  your  post  i  have  tried  to  block  sunlight.  awaiting  to  see  improvement.

@prejithpreman,  as  i  had  mentioned  this  tank  currently  holds  fries  i  hope  pleco  would  not  gulp  the  fires.

@jabba  yes  the  water  flow  is  pretty  decent,  the  reason  say  it  is  -  when  i  feed  crushed  flakes  i  can  see  tinny  particles  going  all  around  in  the  tank  until  they  are  eaten  up.

@mistryde,  Deepak  -  i  am  new  to  plants  and  do  not  know  what  is  normal  growth.  These  plants  have  been  around  for  over  2  months  now,  fren  have  sprouted  4  new  plants,  what  i  mean  is  from  the  tip  of  leaves  they  stated  to  get  roots  and  new  leaves  have  grown  from  the  tips.  but  in  general  i  was  expecting  a  lot  more  dense  vegetation  which  i  have  not  got  yet.  I  am  unable  to  spot  any  holes  on  the  leaves.

Anubias  had  4  leaves  when  i  bought,  2  of  them  withered  away.  On  the  images  apart  from  larger  leaves  the  rest  have  grown  in  my  tank.

I  dose  the  tank  every  other  day  with  2  cups  -  10  ml  of  Seachem  Florish  excel  not  sure  if  that  could  qualify  as  fertilizers.

Is  this  normal  growth?  i  have  rad  a  lot  of  times  that  patients  is  the  key  to  having  a  good  planted  aquarium  so  that  question  is  am  i  being  patient  enough???   Smile

your  plants  will  start  to  grow  well  once  they  get  accustomed  to  your  tank  conditions.
anubias  and  java  fern  take  some  time  to  settle.once  they  do,they  will  thrive  Thumbs Up

 Regards,
 Ashwin  Mathew

Hi  Srinath,  you  can't  expect  fast  growth  and  dense  vegetation  with  anubias  &  Java  fern  as  these  are  very  slow  growers.   The  do  require  low  light  &  hence  ferts.   However  they  do  grow  a  lot  faster  under  brighter  light  &  fertilization.   You  said  you  lost  some  leaves  on  the  anubias.   The  leaves  of  these  hardy  plants  die  very  late.  There  must  be  some  deficiency  due  to  which  the  leaves  are  falling  off.  can  you  post  a  full  pic  of  your  tank  ?
Flourish  excel  is  more  of  organic  CO2  fertilization.
