First  decide  the  lighting  requirements  you  need  or  give  the  details  of  the  tank..  so  that  people  can  help  you  to  choose  the  best  lighting  option..

im  planning  to  buy  a  1.25  ft  cube  and  i  have  a  46cm  x  23cm  x  23cm  tank,  i  am  planning  to  grow  riccia  as  carpet  in  both

(i  was  able  to  make  riccia  pearl  and  grow  well  in  the  46cm  x  23cm  x  23cm  tank  with  a  36w  pll  and  diy  co2,  but  are  heavy  algae  problems  on  other  stem  plants...so  i  want  to  decrease  lighting  on  that  one)

The  connections  should  be  same  for  all  4pin  PLL,  so  what  wattage  lower  than  36W  have  you  found?

This  is  a  very  confusing  question,  hope  I  ll  interpret  it  correctly.

For  the  first  one,  answered  above.  But  I  dont  understand  your  confusion,  as  1st  and  3rd  are  two  pin,  so  why  will  you  have  a  4  pin  connector?-  so  you  are  thinking  right,  you  need  a  2  pin  connector=  holder  +  supporting  ballast(which  must  already  be  inside  it-  if  its  failed,  its  another  story)

for  2nd  option,  i.e.  if  you  have  a  4pin  PLL,  then  you  need  a  electronic  ballast  having  4  wire  output.  Or  a  copper  ballast  +  a  starter.

well,  first  question,  what  kind  of  ballast  do  you  have?  one  that  has  two  wires  or  4  wires?
If  you  are  sound  at  electronics,  you  can  put  a  starter  inbetween  middle  two  pins  and  convert  a  4  pin  PLL  to  a  2  pin  PLL.

......for  my  36w  pll  i  m  using  the  40  w  electronic  ballast  (philips  sumo  ballast)  having  4  wires  on  one  side(to  connect  to  pll)  and  2  wires  on  other  side  to  connect  to  "wire  to  socket  on  wall"...

Well,  you  are  not  searching  well,  because  it  must  be  inside  somewhere,  may  be  small.  You  always  need  a  ballast  for  PLL(hint:  Ballast+  PLL=  CFL)

.........yes  you  are  right,  the  9w  pll  is  inside  a  black  fixture,  i  am  a  bit  scared  to  unscrew  the  fixture  to  prevent  any  loose  connection  so  i  havent  unscrewed  the  part  where  the  wires  are  connected,  but  you  have  cleared  the  big  doubt  i  had...that  it  has  only  2  pin  so  it  doesnt  need  a  4  pin  connector...

 Like  this

..........you  have  cleared  that  confusion,  thanks.......so  what  i  understood  is  that  1st  and  3rd  pll  in  my  photo  are  2  pin  pll  and  they  dont  need  4  pin  connector  ,  ie  they  require  "electronic  ballasts  having  2  wires  on  both  sides"
for  the  2nd  pll  in  photo  ,i  need  a  4  pin  connector  and  a  "ballast  having  4  wires  on  one  side  and  2  on  other  side"

........so  at  electrical  shop  i  just  ask  them  to  give  a  18  w  pll(requiring  4  pin  connector)  and  a  ballast  for  it?....and  can  i  use  a  40w  ballast  to  power  more  than  1  "less  than  36w  pll"  eg-  40  w  ballast  to  2  18w  pll  for  two  tanks?

This  is  a  very  confusing  question,  hope  I  ll  interpret  it  correctly.
thank  you  very  much  for  the  reply,  with  step  by  step  answers...i  dont  know  much(almost  nil  to  be  exact)  about  electrical  things  ,  so  i  dont  even  know  how  to  properly  ask  even  a  question/terms....again  thanks  for  comprehending  my  Q  and  answering  it

 @  Waseem,

For  you  information,  the  first  and  the  third  lights  are  not  PLL,  but  they  are  PL-C.  And  PL-C  has  to  be  connected  to  a  different  ballast.  You  cannot  use  a  ballast  meant  for  PLL  to  a  PL-C  lamp.

The  middle  one  with  4  pins  is  PLL.  And  this  would  have  different  ballast.

So  my  first  point  would  be  -  Decide  which  tube  to  use.  PL-L  or  PL-C

One  more  point  to  be  added  is  PL-L  have  more  lumens/watts  than  PL-C.  PL-C  have  lesser  lumens.

So  decide  first  on  which  to  use.  And  then  buy  the  required  ballast.

@Shelly  D'silva,  thanks  for  clearing  that,  so  i  would  definitely  buy  the  pll......i  want  to  grow  riccia  as  carpet  with  pearling  in  a  6gallon  and  1.25ft  cube(9.3g),  so  for  2-3  wpg  im  planning  to  buy  a  18w  pll  and  24wpll  respectively.......

....so  there  are  electronic  ballasts  for  18w  and  24w?  i  just  have  to  go  to  electrical  shop  and  tell  them  to  give  the  ballasts  for  18w  and  24w  pll?  ...my  doubt  is  whether  ballasts  are  present  for  18w  and  24w....

...and  is  it  possible  to  connect  2  x  18w  pll  for  2  tanks  to  a  single  common  40  w  ballast?

Yes.  There  is  ballast  available  for  18  and  24watts  PLL.

You  cannot  use  40Watts  ballast  to  drive  18  or  24watts  PLL's.

Hi  Waseem,  were  you  able  to  get  the  ballasts?   If  you  did,  could  you  please  post  a  picture  of  what  you  got,  with  details  on  what  to  ask  for?

I  have  been  trying  to  get  a  ballast  myself.   But  the  shops  seem  to  have  only  one  model  that  basically  makes  the  PL-S  work  as  a  light  bulb.   It  looks  like  the  base  of   CFL  and  fits  into  the  bulb  socket.   Or  atleast,  that  is  what  they  insist  as  the  only  option.   Basically  they  want  to  make  a  quick  sale  of  what  they  have,  rather  than  try  to  help  us  out  get  what  we  want.

ok  bought  18w  pll  today  and  its  18w  ballast,  thanks  shelly  ,  nidhi,  saikumar...

and  i  found  that  there  is  26w  pll  also  but  it  has  twin  tubes(the  ones  in  the  lower  row  of  the  pic  below)  and  another  arrangement  of  4  pins  (2  pins  and  another  pins  parallel  )...the  two  tubes  are  arranged  in  a  diff  manner,  is  it  good?

@johnny...i  bought  it  today  ,  i  just  went  to  the  shop  and  asked  for  18w  cfl,  but  the  shop  person  told  me  they  are  called  pll,  and  i  asked  for  the  pll  holder, ballast  for  it  and  he  gave  it  too,  but  it  did  not  have  the  wires  (red  wires  in  the  pic)(the  ballast  for  36w  pll  has  the  wires  attached  to  it  but  18w  ballast  does  not  have  wires  attached  to  it)  to  attach  to  plug  and  the  pll  holder  so  i  asked  him  to  give  them  too,  he  connected  all  the  wires  and  showed  it  working,  i  asked  about  the  other  types  of  pll,  ...this  shop  is  a  good  shop,  they  have  put  lot  of  these  tubes  in  display,  i  used  to  go  to  other  shops  earlier  which  were  nearer  my  home,  but  ever  since  i  found  this  shop  i  always  go  here  cos  the  shop  has  more  variety  of  tubes  and  lot  of  them  are  displayed....and  the  black  wire  is  called  "radio  cord  wire",  i  bought  it  cos  it  has  more  style  than  the  "red  and  black  twisted  wire"....i  did  not  get  it  from  the  electrical  shop...  i  had  to  go  to  a  place  where  there  are  lots  of  "electronics  shop"  to  get  it...
