I  made  a  hanging  light  hood  from  pvc.  but  i  want  some  suggestions  to  make  it  better.  i  always  admired  the  hanging  hood,  but  could  not  understand  how  to  prevent  the  vertical  stand  from  bending,  and  where  to  attach  the  vertical  stand

 first  the  connections  working

now  the  stand  on  which  i  keep  the  aquarium,  i  kept  a  card  board  piece  above  the  pvc  ,then  a  piece  of  thermocol,  then  the  tank

now  the  actual  light  hood,  bought  it  from  pvc  shop...it  is  sold  as  half  pieces  so  no  need  to  cut  a  pipe  into  half....i  took  it  to  a  workshop  near  my  home  asked  them  to  drill  a  hole  in  the  middle  to  allow  a  1/2  inch  pvc  pipe  to  pass  through,  and  small  holes  for  passing  the  screw  for  pll  holder...to  the  middle  1/2  inch  hole  pvc  connections  were  made...pvc  connections  can  be  seen  in  the  photo

now  the  underside  of  the  pvc  hood....

the  vertical  stand....i  am  planning  to  move  the  aquarium  nearer  to  vertical  stand  during  next  round  of  modification   to  prevent  the  small  leaning  of  the  vertical  stand...  i  need  a  few  suggestions  for  this  part

planning  to  paint  it  black,  i  think  then  it  will  be  beautiful,  god  willing

I  really  like  the  hood  i  made  and  am  planning  to  paint  it  black,  but  i  dont  think  the  tank  is  getting  enough  light,  so  im  planning  to  decrease  the  height.  My  aim  is  to  make  an  iwagumi  with  dwarf  hairy  grass  as  carpet.  For  6G  im  providing  18W  pll.  i  put  a  layer  of  laterite  soil(i  think  it  is  laterite  soil,  took  the  reddish  soil  from  a  field)  covered  by  a  layer  of  washed  beach  sand.  Hope  it  grows

Please  provide  some  suggestions  to  improve  the  fixture...there  is  chance  of  the  vertical  stand  bending,  i  havent  used  pvc  cement  to  glue  it,  but  till  now  (about  4  hrs  since  i   made  it)  its  looking  pretty  vertical,  and  also  suggestions  to  successfully  grow  carpet  of  dwarf  hairy  grass

And  i  want  to  thank  nidhi,  athreyan  for  introducing  me  to  pvc  connections  and  hamza.  aquamad,  bpldude, imrandayatar,  radjanir  for  their  posts  on  pvc  diy  cannister,  and  shelly  d  silva  for  teaching  me  all  i  know  about  light  connections

Nice  work!  What  is  the  size  of  PVC  that  you  used  for  the  hood?

Please  check  the  safety  aspect.  Overheating  might  cause  PVC  to  melt  or  getting  burnt.

Very  nice  design  Waseem  Thumb Up  The  thing  is  the  longer  and  thinner  the  pipe  the  more  it  will  tend  to  bend,  you  must  have  realized  this  by  now.

I  would  have  rather  gone  for  a  GI  pipe, just  vertical  rod.  it  wouldnt  have  hurt  the  budget  hopefully.

Secondly,  you  can  try  using  a  45/135  degree  elbows  to  compensate  the  bending  pipes.

Thirdly,  you  can  pre-angle  the  bottom  "T"  such  that  it  is  counter  bent  already  to  compensate  the  sag  on  vertical  rod.

Fourthly,  you  can  more  scientifically  add  a  lateral  support,  by  another  pipe  just  behind,  similar  to  electrical  pole  errection.
   like  in  this  pic.
 like  this

 or  this

And  good  that  you  have  moved  the  ballast  outside  the  hood,  will  reduce  the  sag.

@prabhu,  thank  you,  i  used  1/2  inch  pvc
@ssram,  i  dont  think  it  will  be  issue  i  have  been  using  pvc  hood  with  pll  in  other  2  of  my  tanks,  they  havent  had  any  heating  issues

@saikumar...youre  awesome,  i  was  hoping  someone  would  advice  me  regarding  that, thank  you  very  much  for  the  detailed  explanation....
The  thing  is  the  longer  and  thinner  the  pipe  the  more  it  will  tend  to  bend,  you  must  have  realized  this  by  now.
so  ill  increase  the  diameter  of  the  vertical  stand  to  3/4  inch?

I  would  have  rather  gone  for  a  GI  pipe, just  vertical  rod.  it  wouldnt  have  hurt  the  budget  hopefully.
but  will  it  have  any  benefit  over  the  pvc  for  the  "leaning  vertical  stand  issue"?  i  shall  check  whether  its  available  in  the  required  size

Secondly,  you  can  try  using  a  45/135  degree  elbows  to  compensate  the  bending  pipes.
 u  mean  like  this?....drew  at  this  site..http://drawisland.com/

Thirdly,  you  can  pre-angle  the  bottom  "T"  such  that  it  is  counter  bent  already  to  compensate  the  sag  on  vertical  rod.
i  did  not  understand  ,  can  you  please  explain?
 like  this?

Fourthly,  you  can  more  scientifically  add  a  lateral  support,  by  another  pipe  just  behind,  similar  to  electrical  pole  errection.
 like  in  this  pic.

but  how  will  i  do  that  for  pvc?  using  connections/using  screw?

if  i  use  2  vertical  stands  i  may  be  able  to  overcome  the  leaning  issue...but  it  may  look  awkward

 Hi  Waseem,
 Great  DIY!
I  personally  think  you've  overdone  the  stand  with  so  much  PVC  on  the  underside.  But  its  better  to  err  on  the  safe  side  than  to  regret,  As  for  the  bending,  PVC  will  bend,  no  matter  what.  Even  if  you  increase  the  gauge  of  the  pipe,  it  will  bend  eventually.  I  would  suggest,  you  use  some  metallic  pipe  to  keep  the  shape.  If  you  have  the  budget,  use  steel  or  stainless  steel.  It  would  be  aesthetically  nice.  Otherwise  use  GI  pipe.

Another  idea  would  be  to  brace  it  from  the  sides.  Make  an  arch  like  structure  and  hang  the  light  from  that.  Ofcourse,  PVC  may  still  not  help.

thats  sad  to  hear,  i  dont  want  to  spend  too  much  money  on  the  light  as  im  saving  to  buy  pressurised  co2  next  ,  my  main  aim  is  to  make  a  beautiful  iwagumi/dutch  aquarium,  now  adjusting  with  diy  co2,  once  that  is  done  i  will  do  the  stainless  steel  modifications,  god  willing

 yes  Waseem,  just  like  that.
If  you  think  SS  is  going  to  cost  you  more,  why  don't  you  go  for  GI  pipe?  It  will  not  cost  as  much  as  SS  pipe.

Some  other  options  I  thought  of:

wood  or  bamboo.  But  you'll  need  some  carpentry  skills!

or  you  can  try  to  stuff  the  PVC  pipe  with  something  so  that  it  keeps  its  shape.  maybe  something  like  long  sticks  or  something.  I'm  not  sure  how  it  will  work,  but  I'm  just  trying  to  give  you  ideas.  You  could  maybe  stuff  it  with  wet  clay.  when  it  dries  up,  it  might  become  strong.  Might  sound  crazy.  I'm  just  writing  every  idea  coming  to  me.
