 Hello  friends!

After  asking  lot  many  carpenters  to  make  a  hood  for  me  out  of  plywood,  nobody  turned  out  and  some  asked  lot  of  money.
So  I  decided  to  make  the  hood  myself  since  I  had  the  plywood  with  me.  So  on  Saturday  got  all  the  tools  for  carpentry.  Here  are  the  pics

Here  are  the  pics  in  the  making  of  the  hood.

The  left  hand  side  is  cut  to  accommodate  the  HOB  filter  and  auto  feeder

The  hood  is  still  not  complete.  Once  complete  the  aquarium  will  be  placed  on  top  of  the  shoe  rack  in  the  living  room

 Regards
 Agnelo

 Thanks  Saikumar,  Smile

I  too  liked  the  tools!  A  bad  workman  should  never  blame  his  tools,  so  got  good  ones   Chuckle

I  am  planning  to  paint  the  inner  side  of  the  hood  white  while  the  outer  side  will  be  laminates  to  make  the  aquarium  blend  with  the  furniture  in  the  living  room.  Very Happy

What  do  you  say?  Painting  will  be  okay  na?

 Regards
 Agnelo

Yes,  I  wanted  to  say  varnish.  Just  corrected  it.
White  paint  should  do  ok  on  the  inside,  may  be  you  can  also  bolt  on  aluminum  sheet,  will  prove  better  than  wood  in  reflection.

Good  work.  Here  are  couple  of  pointers  that  might  help  further.

 1.  Have  some  air  circulation  inside  the  hood  to  reduce  humidity.  (Fan)
I  have  a  similar  hood  with  a  fan  mounted.  I  used  it  for  4years  without  any  problem.  Once  I  had  a  wipe  out  of  all  fishes  and  abandoned  the  tank  for  ~4-5months.  After  that  saw  that  the  plies  were  starting  to  flake.  Humidity  buildup  was  the  issue.  Started  the  tank  again  and  things  were  stable  again  (no  deterioration).

 2.  Saikumar's  suggestion  on  aluminum  sheet  is  good.  But  paint  it  and  then  put  the  sheets.  The  extra  layer  will  help  in  terms  of  life  of  the  wood.  Again,  white  would  be  a  good  color  for  inside.

 Thanks  Random2  for  the  inputs.

Can  steel  grills  be  used  as  alternative  for  the  fans?   The  hood  is  not  completely  closed,  left  some  space  for  the  HOB  Filter.

+1  Random  and  Sai  Thumb Up

 fantastic  efforts,  and  lovely  tools.

my  25  paise  to  add  with.

regarding  the  ply  getting  wet  and  starting  to  peel  off...  I  would  like  to  suggest  strick  "fore  mica"  or  "sun  mica"  sheets  .  You  get  wonderful  scaped  pictures  on  these  now  a  days.  Put  a  white  flowered  fore/sun  mica  on  the  whole  hood  in  and  out.  Smile

 @garothmaan

I  decided  to  make  the  hood  since  I  had  the  plywood  and  laminates.  I  believe  laminates  and  sun  mica  are  the  same.  Pasting  laminates  is  a  pain.  The  cutting  part  is  difficult.  I  am  in  the  process  of  pasting  laminates.  The  front  and  the  top  are  done.  The  sides  and  the  back  are  still  remaining.  The  laminates  on  the  top  lid  went  wrong.  It  broke  while  cutting  it.  so  I  had  to  completely  remove  it  off.  So  I  will  not  be  going  with  laminates  in  the  inner  side,  just  paint  and  aluminium  sheets.

I  learnt  a  new  thing  by  doing  this.   Smile

If  somebody  wants  to  peel  off  laminates/sun  mics  off  the  plywood,  Heat  up  the  laminated  side  of  the  ply  little  bit,  the  fevicol  will  begin  to  melt  and  you  can  easily  peel  off.  But  please  be  careful  with  chisels,  I  poked  my  left  thumb  with  it  and  blood  started  pouring  out.  It  was  just  minor.  Smile

 Regards
 Agnelo

 Clapping   THATS  GOOD.

There  is  a  better  idea...use  a  clotes-pressing-iron  to  remove  the  laminates.  It  will  come  out  like  masca  (butter)

 Hello  Friends!

The  lamination  work  is  all  done.  Now  the  internal  painting  and  aluminium  sheet  work  is  only  pending.  I  am  90%  satisfied  with  the  work.   Smile

(apologies  for  the  dirty  glass   Sad  )

The  finishing  has  come  out  okay.
