 Hi  All,

My  house  is  under  renovation  and  I  will  be  making  a  New  Tank  in  the  wall  between  the  Living  Room  and  Kitchen  the  slot  was  originally  meant  for  a  service  window  from  the  kitchen  to  the  dinning  area.

I  intend  to  increase  the  width  by  having  the  base  platform  (Granite)  broader  than  the  wall  thickness  that  will  give  me  approx  size  of  28"L  X  15"B  X  18"H.

My  question  to  you  all  as  under:

 a)  Who  will  make  the  Tank  for  me
 b)  What  Glass  should  I  use  what  thickness.
 c)  Total  wattage  of  lighting  for  a  planted  tank  of  this  size.
 d)  What  soil  should  I  use.

Any  other  suggestion  you  may  have.

Your  inputs  will  be  greartly  appreciated.

 Thuds

 Hi,

Before  planning  for  the  type  of  tank,  check  if  you  have  sufficient  enough  space  between  the  tank  upper  surface  and  the  upper  wall.

If  you  do  not  have  sufficient  space,  then  it  would  be  very  difficult  to  do  maintenance.  When  going  for  a  planted  tank,  you  need  to  have  a  open  top  kind  of  light.  Or  else,  it  will  increase  the  temperature  of  the  water.  So  first  check  these  things  and  then  decide  on  what  type  of  tank  you  can  keep  in  the  wall.

Shelly  thanks  for  your  comments  and  illustration,  yes  I  do  have  about  6"  space  between  tank  top  and  upper  wall  and  the  tank  would  be  jutting  out  in  to  the  kitchen  about  8"  sufficient  for  cleaning  and  maintenance.

However  i  do  not  have  space  of  more  than  1/2"  on  either  side.

Please  guide  me  how  to  proceed.

 Hi  All,

After  some  discussions  with  friends  have  narrowed  down  on  below:

 8  mm  Glass  no  braces
 ADA  substrate
Internal  Filter  (No  space  far  any  other  type)
 Pathway  with  white  gravel
Lighting  2X55w  PLL  with  Frontier  timer.

Please  advise  if  I  am  on  the  right  track.  Your  comments/views  welcome  as  I  have  some  time  before  I  can  start  the  interior  renovation  is  going  to  take  some  time.

Its  a  good  idea.  The  height  is  a  little  less  for  a  high  light  tank.

 Shelly  fantastic  example  Thumb Up

thuds  -  buy   clear  glass  8mm  thickness  only  for  the  front  and  rear  sheets.  Since  there  is  no  view  on  side  you  can  use  any  glass  for  bottom  and  side.  its  will  save  money  and  will  add  that  to  the  clear  glass  cost.

Clear  glass  means  completely  white  crystal  clear  no  shade.  if  you  will  see  from  the  top  edges  of  the  glass  sheet  it  should  be  white  not  blue.

go  to  a  LFS  and  ask  if  they  will  come  and  make  the  tank  at  your  premises.  You  bring  the  glass  as  per  their  measuremnt

bring  perfectly  cut  glass  and  get  it  made  at  home  directly  within  that  space.  remember  to  get  the  glass  nicely  smoothened  for  the  top  side.

You  should  be  able  to  remove  the  whole  tank  from  that  slot  yourself  alone.  That  should  be  the  case  for  your  tank  as  its  about  2ft.

try  to  assemble  the  lights  in  such  a  way  that  even  when  its  on  and  hot  your  hand  must  reach  inside  of  the  tank  to  plant  the  stems.

Cover  the  lights  with  shade  from  the  top....  just  2  plain  sun  board  sheets  in  45  deg  angle  from  the  top  to  cover  and  can  be  opened  or  removed.  or  buy  a  complete  set  with  reflectors  and  just  put  above  the  tank.

rest  of  the  material  and  scap  is  your  deal.  Thumb Up   gohed  good  luck

 Gorthmaan,

Thanks  for  your  comments  suggestions  noted.

With  regard  to  lights  i  have  an  issue,  if  i  go  for  lights  from  the  inside  (Kitchen)  I  can  have  a  hood  of  about  8"  with  the  lights  concentrated  at  the  back  end  of  the  tank.

Whereas  if  I  go  by  your  suggestion  then  I  will  have  the  light  pointing  towards  the  front  end  and  dim  towards  the  back.

Give  me  an  idea  to  have  light  evenly  distributed  all  over  the  tank  within  the  given  constraints.

 Thuds

PS:  Other  suggestions  regarding  layout  rocks  driftwood  and  type  of  plants  to  use  welcome.

You  will  have  to  go  for  passively  cooled  LEDS.  You  can  have  the  LEDs  mounted  on  a  1-0.5  inch  thick  aluminium  section  and  have  the  drivers  on  the  kitchen  side  mounted  above  the  protruding  heatsink.  Go  for  1W  or  3W  LEDs  running  on  half  power  to  keep  them  cool.

For  making  the  tank  you  can  go  to  Nitesh  Patel  or  to  the  last  aquarium  shop  in  Bandra  opp  the  Talao.  Last  if  Sweet  Home  Aquarium  is  the  first,  the  shop  with  narrow  entry  with  tanks  along  the  wall.  Does  a  decent  job  and  reasonably  priced.
No  idea  of  an  LED  fabricator  but  in  most  light  shops  you  get  thin  led  spotlights  ,  They  are  around  an  inch  thick  and  have  around  9  LEDs  with  lenses.
I  have  a  10x3W  LEDs  with  dimmer  for  sale  if  you  want.  You  may  need  to  get  the  lenses  from  lohar  chawl  if  needed

Thanks  Nirant  I  have  6"  above  the  tank  top  and  the  Granite.  I  will  need  someone  to  fabricate  4-5"  hood  made  of  acrylic  of  sun  board  that  can  be  attached  to  the  granite  on  top  on  kept  on  the  tank  side  walls  with  stands.  You  mentioned  9w  LED  with  1"  thickness  that  sounds  very  interesting  can  they  be  mounted  on  to  a  plywood  with  silver  tin  reflector  where  can  I  see  them  on  the  net  do  you  have  a  link.

 Hello  Thuds,

The  tank  would  look  good  if  you  could  conceal  all  the  lighting  on  to  the  top  portion  of  the  service  window,  so  there  wont  be  any  requirement  of  hood  for  you.  For  the  filters  you  can  go  with  HOB  filters  which  will  be  much  effective  than  internal  filters.

 Regards
 Agnelo

Hi,  I  meant  something  like  what  is  in  the  link  below  :

 http://www.wholesaleledlights.co.uk/led-downlight-9w-led-70w-halogen-2-colours-available-800-lumens.html

Just  embed  it  in  plywood  or  whatever  and  have  it  fitted  to  the  top  granite.  Dont  have  a  fully  enclosed  hood  keep  the  space  between  the  lights  and  tank  empty
