 Hello  All

Time  for  a  third  tank.  This  time  its  4ft*2ft*18ft  LBH  dense  planted  tank  with  ADA  Amazonia  substrate.  I  had  planned  for  a  DIY  substrate  but  a  city  like  Jaipur  restricts  the  aspirations  for  DIY  susbtrate.

I  have  planned  for  LED  fixtures  this  time.  Decided  to  have  42  nos  3  watts  cool  day  light  ,  4  nos  3  watts  Red   and  2  nos  3  watts  blue  LED.  I  have  few  spares  ones  as  well.  All  are  of  Edison  brand.

I  tried  searching  for  suitable  driver  here  in  Jaipur  but  couldnt  find  a  suitable  one.  To  admit  plainly,  my  knowledge  about  electronics  is  spread  too  thin  already  Smile.

I  need  your  help  and  guidance  for  suitable  drivers  and  procurement  source  for  above  LED  setup.

I  am  no  expert  in  LEDs  but  here  are  few  things  from  what  I  know  -

you  need  2  pieces  of  information  before  deciding  what  kind  and  how  many  drivers  you  need.

LEDs  are  constant  current  devices  and  dimming  needs  to  be  done  by  varying  the  voltage.

 1.  You  need  to  check  what  current  you  want  to  drive  the  LEDs.  I  dont  know  the  specs  of  your  LEDs  but  its  between  .65  -  1.2A  for  3watt  LEDs  -  am
The  lesser  current,  the  safer  it  is  but  you  will  also  be  compromising  on  lumens.

 2.  What  voltage  you  need  to  drive  them  at  (maybe  Max)  -  vm

You  can  calculate  total  power  required  with  this  guestimation  -  am  x  vm  x  n  -  n  being  the  number  of  LEDs  (you  might  have  to  tweak  this  if  the  LEDs  are  of  different  specs)

Now  you  might  want  to  choose  more  than  1  driver  to  accommodate  your  power  requirements.

For  source,  I  would  say  you  can  look  at  ebay  which  is  easier  in  terms  of  sourcing.  But  you  need  to  check  on  quality.  dx.com  is  also  an  option.  There  are  quite  a  few  sites  dedicated  to  quality  LED  equipment  but  you  need  to  check  on  international  shipping  and  price.

You  take  the  above  as  starting  point  and  get  some  more  information,  then  you  will  have  a  better  idea  on  what  you  need  to  look  for.

Disclaimer  -  I  am  not  an  electronics  guy  nor  an  LED  expert.

PS:  If  you  are  looking  for  the  cheapest  and  easiest  to  source  option  -  a  decent  computer  power  supply  might  serve  your  purpose.  But  you  will  need  to  tweak  a  bit  to  get  constant  current  at  required  voltages.  LED  drivers  will  save  you  that  work.

From  where  you  sourced  the  Edison  LEDs  ?  Same  source  must  have  power  supply  as  well  for  sale  ?
Else,  you  also  can  check  in  ebay  india,  I  had  seen  few  sellers  doing  it.

 Hi  Sanjay,

You  need  to  get  multiple  drivers  and  split  the  leds  into  strings.  For  eg  -  4  strings  with  12  leds  each  or  5  strings  with  10  leds  each.  All  the  leds  will  be  wired  in  series.  The  driver  requirement  are  easy  to  calculate  as  Deepak  mentioned.  You  will  need  to  keep  options  open  if  you  dont  get  the  desired  driver  and  change  the  number  of  strings  and  the  leds  in  it  depending  on  the  driver  available.

If  the  led  is  rated  at  700ma  and  the  forward  voltage  is  3v-
 for  a  string  of  12  leds  =  36v-39v*  700ma  X  4  drivers
 for  a  string  of  8  leds  =  24v  -27v*  700ma  X  6  drivers

Please  look  on  ebay  and  if  you  dont  get  any  there  try  the  chinese  sites  like  dx.

If  no  suitable  drivers  are  available,  then  a  power  supply  can  be  modded  as  Deepak  mentioned,  but  keep  that  as  the  last  option.

 Regards,

 Abhishek

 Dear  Abhishek

I  got  them  locally  made.  Service  great.  Total  price  for  3  drivers  was  <Rs  1600.

 I  follow  simple  steps

Use  same  voltage  LEDs  (one  type  of  driver  would  be  sufficient)

Connect  in  parallel  (so  current  divides  and  voltage  remains  constant)

Current  divides  (so  sum  up  the  current  used  by  all  the  LEDs)

 My  Project

 Tank  Size  18  X  12  X  12  LBH
LEDs  Used  -  cool  white  2,  Warm  White  1  and  Blue  1
 each  LED  is  10W,  1amp  and  12Volt
Connected  in  parallel  so  my  driver  is

Voltage:  connected  in  parallel  so  12  volt  remains  constant

 Hi,
I  am  using  led  setup  for  last  3  years.  I  am  using  meanwell  led  driver.  The  drivers  are  available  in  India  through  their  distributor.  You  can  check  their  site  for  more  details.  Since  you  are  using  3  watt  led  it  would  be  using  700  miliamp.  You  can  use  their  led  driver  which  have  700  miliamp.  You  can  connect  all  the  led  in  series..

voltage  will  be  divided  in  series  so  the  voltage  you  use  should  be  the  sum  of  voltages  of  individual  lEDs
