 Hi  Friends,

I  am  back  with  yet  another  query  :)

I  recently  bought  some  used  contro  soil  from  a  seller  on  one  of  the  buy/sell  sites.  He  claimed  to  have  used  it  just  for  2  months,  and  changed  his  mind  to  migrate  to  a  marine  setup.  I  believed  him  and  since  he  was  selling  it  for  cheap,  I  bought  a  10  ltrs  portion.  The  soil  itself  looked  good  and  wasn't  crumbly,  so  I  was  convinced.

Come  today,  I  decided  to  sieve  the  soil  to  separate  the  tinier  grains  (around  2mm)  from  the  bigger  ones,  to  be  used  for  foreground  plants.
And  I  slowly  poured  in  water  from  a  tap,  and  guess  what,  the  water  turned  completely  black  !!  Surprised  It  was  almost  like  I  was  looking  at  cola,  it  was  that  dark  !!  I  drained  it,  re-poured  couple  of  more  times,  and  the  cola  water  kept  coming  back,  though  not  as  dark.  But  it  was  still  very  very  dirty  :(

Is  this  normal  with  contro  soil?  Or  you  think  I  was  cheated,  in  which  case  I  should  Wall Bang

Appreciate  your  inputs.  Thanks  in  advance.

 Regards,
 Abhi

You  are  not  supposed  to  wash  artificial  substrates  like  Controsoil  and  Amazonia.  They  will  crumble  which  is  what  you  are  seeing  with  the  black  water

Thanks  Mortis,  but  I  didnt  wash  them  per  say.  I  just  poured  in  water  very  very  slowly  (without  disturbing  the  top  layer)  and  this  black  water  seemed  to  come  back.  I  never  put  in  my  hand  or  anything  to  move/rinse  the  soil  around.
Also,  will  ADA  soil  do  the  same?

I  am  worried  of  dirt  deposit  on  the  glass  when  I  fill  this  up  in  my  tank  Sad

 Hi,

Post  your  pict  and  lets  see  what  exactly  has  happen  also  when  you  pour  the  water  in  the  soil  have  you  direcly  pour  the  water  into

the  substrate  or  you  have  kept  any  thing  flat  thing  like  plate  so  that  wate  will  flow  smoothly  also  intially  water  will  be  dark  but  once

you  start  filter  it  will  become  clear  depending  on  your  filter.

Thanks  Rahul.  As  I  said,  I  was  very  very  careful  when  pouring  water.  I  held  the  substrate  close  to  the  tap  (almost  touched  the  tap)  the  first  time  and  opened  the  tap  just  a  little  bit,  so  the  flow  wasn't  too  strong.  Subsequent  filling,  I  did  by  placing  my  palm  on  the  substrate  and  water  poured  into  my  palm  first,  this  way  the  substrate  wasn't  in  direct  contact.  I  don't  have  a  pic  right  now,  but  it  did  look  like  cola  water   Surprised

I  haven't  filled  in  my  tank  yet,  and  I  wont  do  it  until  I  am  convinced  this  soil  is  ok.  This  tank  is  going  to  be  heavily  planted,  and  I  am  worried  about  creating  this  cola  water  when  I  may  have  to  shuffle/remove  the  plants.

Does  contro  soil  usually  crumble  so  easy?  If  yes,  then  does  it  not  beat  the  whole  purpose  of  using  commercial  substrate  against  our  local  laterite?  Thanks  again  for  your  time  and  knowledge  share.

keep  a  news  paper  above  the  substrate  covering  full  tank  on  substrate  and  poor  water  in  same  method  you  already  did  to  pour  water.  It  helped  me.
Water  clears  out  after  a  day  or  so,  no  need  to  panic.

That  sounds  great,  thanks  Shyam  !!  And  I  assume  I  should  have  the  HOB  switched  off  till  the  dust  settles,  else  the  flow  would  make  matters  worse?  Also,  I  don't  want  the  muck  accumulated  in  my  HOB  filter  pads,  that'll  be  a  pain  to  get  off.  Please  correct  me  if  I  am  wrong  Smile

Never  rinse  or  wash  the  branded  soils..  as  already  told..
You  were  supposed  to  directly  put  it  in  the  tank  and  wet  it  slightly  first,  then  cover  it  up  with  some  news  paper  or  plastic  cover  and  slowly  fill  up  the  tank..
Some  times  you  will  have  to  wait  for  a  day  to  start  the  planting..  if  you  have  murky  water.

Yes  Nidhi,  I  kind  of  learnt  it  the  hard  way   Sad
But  it  was  good  in  a  way,  because  there  were  lots  of  empty  MTS  shells  in  the  soil,  which  are  now  drained  out   Very Happy
One  of  the  reasons  I  rinsed  was  to  get  rid  of  any  shells/dirt  that  might  have  accumulated  while  in  the  previous  owner's  tank.

As  all  said,  you  should  never  wash  the  branded  man  made  soil  granules.
