 Hi,

Planning  to  DIY  a  filter  for  a  10'L  x  3'W  x  2'H  fresh  water  pond.  Currently  the  tank  holds  about  20  small  carps.

 Plan:

Would  be  using  a  25lts  or  30lt  blue  container  can.
Would  b  using  3000LPH  submersible  pump  to  make  an  overflow  kind  of  filter.
Filter  media;  What  to  use  and  what  quantity?

Require  inputs  for  the  filter  media  to  be  used  in  such  a  huge  size  container.  What  all  filter  media  to  be  used?

Filling  ceramic  ring  to  this  big  size  container  would  cost  a  bomb!!!  So  thinking  on  some  cheap  media  options.

The  water  from  the  tank  would  go  till  bottom  of  the  container.  The  container  would  be  filled  with  media  till  3/4th  of  the  tank.  The  pure  water  would  fill  top  of  the  tank  and  would  flow  back  to  the  tank.

 Hi  Shelly
I  have  used  these  in  my  DIY  filters  and  they  work  really  well.  You  can  get  them  at  city  market  at  whole  sale  price.  The  price  will  be  in  single  digits.  They  will  fill  up  a  large  volume  and  keep  the  water  clean.  I  used  the  same  concept  as  you,  but  kept  the  filter  inside  the  tank.  Hence  I  had  no  worries  about  water  over  flowing  out  side.

 Hi  Shelly,

I  did  a  same  method  like  yours  and  used  bottom  1kg  ceramic  rings,  above  that  i  kept  plastic  fence  the  green  color  one  which  i  cut  into  6  pieces  and  top  of  it  4kg  small  natural  stones  and  top  of  it  nylon  scrubber(around  50)  like  preeths  mentioned  and  filter  foam.  Where  i  also  run  a  pvc  pipe  extra  with  inlet  pipe  so  every  6  months  when  cleaning  will  remove  only  foam  and  nylon  scrubber  and  will  clean  with  tank  water  and  will  use  blower  through  the  pvc  to  clean  the  stones.  below  is  the  pic  of  my  setup

 @  Preetam,

Thanks  for  the  input.  Will  get  this  from  the  market.

 @  Andrew,

I  am  planning  to  make  baskets  out  of  mosquito  net  and  store  each  media  in  the  basket.  So  while  cleaning,  it  would  be  very  easy.  Just  pull-up  the  basket  and  rinse  it  with  the  same  water  from  the  container.

Can  I  use  this  clay-ball  as  media?

I  used  vegetable  net  bags  the  orange  bags,  That's  a  good  filter  media  want  to  use  above  8mm  size  for  pond  but  cleaning  should  be  done  frequently  for  this  otherwise  it  will  clog  fast,  best  for  pond  is  bio  ball  for  200rs  we  can  get  400  bio  balls  and  i  have  seen  umino.in  is  the  beast  deal  for  both  clay  and  bio  ball.  And  if  you  know  who  gives  less  than  them  do  let  me  know.

The  pond  belongs  to  my  builder.  He  has  a  10'  long  pond  and  we  are  building  the  filter  for  that.  He  already  have  a  50lts  container.

 But  yes..  I  need  a  50  -  100lts  container  for  me..  Smile

 @  Shelly,

You're  not  placing  any  coarse  foam  below  the  clay  balls,  if  not  large  dust  particles  will  clog  the  clay  ball  fast  right?

 @  Deepak,

Can  you  post  a  picture  of  the  canister

Okay..  Then  I  can  add  a  layer  or  coarse  foam  beneath  the  clay  balls.

 Hello  Shelly,

As  per  my  knowledge,  water  should  first  flow  through  all  the  sponge  ie  mechanical  Filtration  and  then  then  trough  biological  Filtration  ie  clay  balls  and  bio  rings.  I  read  somewhere  that  ceramic  rings  are  good  in  terms  of  biological  filtration  because  it  takes  lot  of  time  for  the  bacteria  to  build  up  on  plastic  bio  balls.

One  more  tip  -  You  can  also  think  of  placing  activated  carbon  as  media.  This  should  be  just  before  the  water  flows  back  into  the  tank.

 Regards
 Agnelo
