 Hi  Friends,

I  was  wondering  if  any  of  you  have/had  kept  freshwater  crabs  in  your  tanks.
While  browsing  the  web  today  I  came  across  some  posts  about  this  Thai  Micro  Crab  (Limnopilos  Naiyanetri)  which  seems  to  grow  no  bigger  than  an  inch  and  is  safe  with  cherry  shrimp  and  *supposedly*  tetras  too   Thumbs Up

I  read  these  are  hard  to  breed  and  are  mostly  wild  caught  and  shipped  from  Thailand,  hence  the  name.
So  anybody  knows  if  these  are  available  in  Bangalore  or  elsewhere  in  India  ?  Would  love  to  hear  from  you  Smile
 Thanks.

Haven't  heard  of  these  crabs,  knowing  crabs  they  are  opportunistic  feeders.
They  would  go  after  the  shrimps,  but  if  you  have  the  shrimps  in  large  number  the  predation  wont  be  noticed  as  much!

I  have  kept  some  fresh  water  crabs  -

 1.  Vampire  Crabs  and  also
 2.  Micro  Crab.

Vampire  Crab  require  a  bigger  setup  preferably  a  paludarium,  and  require  covering.
 A  thread  of  my  journal
 http://indianaquariumhobbyist.com/community/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=36584

The  Micro  Crab  are  fully  aquatic  and  can  be  kept  easily  with  any  shrimps.  I  have  kept  them  with  shrimps  without  any  casualty.
Only  issue  is  that  once  you  drop  them  in  the  tank  post  that  its  impossible  to  find  them.
And  yes  both  of  them  are  available  easily  here.  Keep  an  eye  on  Chennai  and  Mumbai  dealers  they  get  it  often.

I  bought  some  thai  micro  crabs  last  month  for  my  100  ltr  planted  tank.  But  I  would  advise  not  bothering  with  them.

They  immediately  go  into  hiding  on  being  released.  They  are  extremely  photophobic.  They  come  out  only  when  its  pitch  dark.  So  kind  of  defeats  the  purpose  of  having  them.  And  to  forget  that  they  really  are  tiny  -  around  the  size  of  an  adult  male  RCS.

I  spotted  them  only  twice  in  the  entire  month,  that  too  for  a  few  seconds.  Once  was  when  I  turned  on  the  lights  of  my  tank  on  an  early  morning.  One  critter  was  roaming  on  the  foreground.  But  immediately  scampered  into  the  rocks.  Another  time  I  saw  one  buried  inside  the  substrate  near  the  glass.  I  took  a  few  pics  of  it,  and  soon  it  ran  away.  Haven't  seen  them  ever  since.

So  really  not  worth  their  expensive  cost.  Better  off  getting  CRS  in  that  price.

But  if  you  still  have  the  urge  to  keep  them  then  they'd  like  it  if  you  provide  them  with  ample  of  frogbit  or  water  lettuce  plants.  They  like  to  hang  out  on  their  roots  and  feed  on  the  microfilm.  Otherwise  java  moss  will  also  do.

 Cheers!

Thanks  for  the  info  Chetan  !!  But  I'd  still  get  them  if  available  in  Bangalore,  just  for  the  fun  of  keeping  them.  Thanks  again  Smile  Thumb Up

Welcome  bro.  I  guess  before  I  got  them  if  someone  had  told  me  the  same  thing  I  would  have  still  gone  ahead  and  bought  them  as  well.  Chuckle

What  is  the  spec  of  the  tank  you  intend  on  keeping  them  in?

Also  here  are  pics  of  them  in  my  tank.  Do  note  that  a  grain  of  river  sand  looks  like  a  boulder  next  to  them.

Gosh  !!  I  had  no  idea  they  come  so  small,  I  first  thought  those  were  molts  from  the  crab  instead   Surprised
I  was  planning  to  have  a  pair  in  a  2.5G  planted  shrimp  only  tank  (with  some  8-10  RCS).  Please  let  me  know  if  that's  a  bad  idea.
I  have  another  planted  5G  with  sparkling  gourami's  but  I've  read  they  pack-hunt  shrimps,  so  there's  no  reason  they  wont  see  these  tiny  crabs  as  dinner   :(

Edit:  Forgot  to  mention,  I've  got  lots  of  java  moss,  dwarf  sag  and  other  hiding  places  in  the  2.5G.  And  thanks  for  posting  the  pics   Thumb Up  Here's  a  LINK  to  my  2.5G  thread.

You  can  safely  keep  them  in  your  2.5G.  However  be  prepared  never  to  see  them  again  once  you  drop  them  in.

I  don't  have  any  experience  with  sparkling  gouramis.  However  my  current  100L.  setup  has  flame  and  blue  dwarf  gouramis.  They  don't  kill  adult  shrimp.  But  yes,  they  do  have  an  eye  for  tiny  shrimp.  In  my  case  the  gouramis  control  the  shrimp  population  from  exploding  (like  in  my  earlier  50L  setup).  The  micro  crabs  would  be  too  big  for  them  to  eat  though.

Also,  I  saw  your  tank  setup.  Looks  good.  They  will  definitely  like  your  java  moss  blanket.  However  your  assassin  snails  will  definitely  hunt  the  micro  crabs.  They  are  opportunistic  hunters  and  can  kill  shrimp  (I've  documented  that  in  my  50L  tank  diary  -  check  my  signature).  But  shrimp  reproduce  quickly,  so  we  can  afford  occasional  casualties.  However  micro  crabs  don't  reproduce  successfully  in  the  aquarium.  So  you'll  need  to  keep  that  in  mind.

PostPosted: Thu Jan 29, 2015 5:26 pm Post subject: Re: Anybody kept freshwater crabs? Reply with quote

Thats  great  news,  thanks  for  the  heads  up  chetan   Thumb Up  I  am  ok  not  seeing  them  often,  even  my  RCS  are  behind  the  boulder  most  of  the  times,  but  I  know  they  are  there  when  they  swarm  the  algae  wafer  at  feeding  time  :)

As  for  the  sparklers,  its  true  they  control  the  shrimp  population  but  I  am  facing  issues  getting  my  RCS  to  breed  at  the  moment.  So  don't  have  a  good  population  in  place  to  control  yet  Sad  Hopefully  things  will  change  once  I  rescape  the  2.5G  in  a  month  or  so.  Also,  the  assassins  are  there  just  to  curb  the  pond  snail  population.  I  will  probably  move  them  to  one  of  the  other  tanks  during  rescaping  or  whenever  I  get  the  crabs.

And  the  very  thought  of  having  a  planted  aquarium  was  inspired  by  your  "Its  a  jungle  out  there"  thread  !!  Those  were  the  days  when  I  had  just  got  the  2.5G  running  with  nothing  but  pebbles  and  a  sponge  filter  and  no  fauna,  trying  to  complete  a  fishless  cycle  with  ammonia  solution  and  test  kits  handy   Very Happy  .  So,  thanks  again  for  having  inspired  me  and  many  more  to  take  the  planted  route  Clapping   Clapping

You're  very  much  welcome  bro.  Glad  to  know  that  the  thread  helped  you  out,  and  that  you  are  sharing  your  experience  back  with  the  community.  Planted  is  the  way  to  go.  Smile

In  your  shrimp-only  setup  they  should  come  out  during  feeding  time.  Suggest  you  buy  at  least  6  crabs  (optimum  would  be  10-12).
