 Hi  All,

Can  I  use  the  Mineral  Drinking  Water  delivered  by  petty  shops  (local  term  Can  Water)  for  aquarium.  Do  I  need  to  use  any  precautionary  step  before  I  add  it  into  the  tank.

As  far  I  know  they  use  RO  method  post  filtration  remineralisation  and  no  chlorine.

 Please  advice.

 Thanks,
 Mohan

This  boils  down  to  the  confidence  you  have  with  the  supplier  and  that  he  is  not  cheating  you.  There  was  some  news  that  people  fill  in  ordinary  tap  water  and  mix  some  chemicals  to  give  it  a  taste  like  mineral  water.  so  as  long  as  you  are  sure  the  water  is  actually  pure,  you  can  go  ahead  and  use  it.

 @Op

I  doubt  you  can  use  mineral  water  as  TDS  should  not  be  0  for  the  same.  Mineral  drinking  water  will  contain  different  elements/minerals  that  are  beneficial  for  human  beings,  we  do  not  drink  water  with  TDS  =  0.  That  is  why  DI  is  also  required.  I  did  not  find  a  readymade  RO-DI  unit  though  as  available  abroad.

 Thanks,

 Niladri.

I  believe  the  only  water  with  TDS=0  would  be  distilled  water,  which  is  undrinkable  anyways.
The  canned  water  you  mentioned  usually  come  with  a  minimal  TDS  and  I  have  seen  values  anywhere  between  22  to  30  across  vendors  (assuming  my  TDS  meter  is  close,  if  not  accurate)  Even  the  branded  ones  like  bisleri,  kinley  etc  come  with  6-8  TDS.

Having  said  that,  I  have  been  using  water  from  these  20L  cans  mixed  with  corporation  water,  for  fortnightly  water  changes  on  my  2  low-techs.  For  long  term  and  worry-free  water  changes  though,  RO  units  seem  to  be  the  best  bet  as  already  suggested.

 Hope  this  helped  Smile

I  have  used  and  no  problem  found.  TDS  was  at  40  when  checked  .
It  works  out  easier  and  cheaper  at  Rs.  30  a  can  I  get  in  comparison  to  Kent  RO  dispenser.

I  used  the  water  in  a  guppy  test  tank  when  opted  for  first  time.  No  issues  detected  and  then  started  using  my  main  tank.  I  did  not  have  a  TDS  meter  at  that  time  though.

 ^

All  of  us  can  use  mineral  water  /  distilled  water  whatever  suits  each  of  us  but  for  marine  tanks,  the  commercial  sea  salts  available  are  designed  to  use  with  TDS  =  0  only.  I  thought  op  is  having  a  saltwater  tank.

Anyway,  for  my  freshwater  tanks,  I  have  used  tap  water  for  5  years  without  any  issue  except  for  a  bit  diatoms  and  other  algae.  It  used  to  grow  in  the  sump  though.
