 Hi  All,

I  have  setup  a  new  low  tech  planted  tank.  I  have  set  it  up  just  8  days  back  and  it  is  in  cycling  mode.  I  have  just  plants  in  the  tank  and  no  fauna.Things  were  fine  so  far.  But  yesterday  I  found  few  snails  in  my  tank.  Seems  like  i  got  some  through  plants  even  after  sterlising  it  using  KMNO4  solution.

After  googling,  it  looks  like  i  got  bladder  snails  in  my  tank.  I  can  see  some  small  10  snails  and  for  sure  there  will  be  lot  more.

Is  there  a  way  to  eradicate  or  control  these  snails?

I  read  somewhere  that  introducing  Assasin  snails  may  control  the  snail  population.  Any  thought  on  this?  If  so,  where  i  can  get  these  in  Chennai?

Any  other  pointer  will  also  be  very  much  helpful  to  tackle  my  problem.

 Thanks.

Kolathur  would  be  a  good  place  to  look  for  Assasin  snails.  The  dwarf  puffer  will  also  eradicate  the  snails.

Thanks  Nidhi  and  Preeths  for  the  input.  I  got  few  Assasin  Snails  from  LFS  and  it  started  working  on  its  mission  to  eradicate  bladder  snails  Cheer

Add  two  or  three  yoyo  loaches  depending  on  your  tank  size

You  could  also  try  a  snail  trap  with  food  inside.

I  had  this  same  situation,  snails  seem  to  reproduce  in  100s  and  my  Assassin  snail  had  a  tough  time  fighting  them.  I  added  only  one  Assassin  Snail  in  my  9  liter  tank  and  he  is  taking  good  care.

On  my  large  Tank  (160  Ltrs),  I  decided  to  add  2  Clown  Loaches  which  do  a  much  better  job  of  eating  up  all  the  snails.

In  both  the  cases,  only  if  you  underfeed  them,  this  works.  If  you  have  many  uneaten  fish  food  left  out  in  the  bottom  of  the  tank,  then  these  guys  become  lazy  and  wont  care  much  about  killing  snails.

I  too  have  added  clown  loaches,  but  still  much  is  left  to  do.  I  cant  put  assassins  snails  as  the  clown  loach  will  eat  them.  so  i  am  awaitng  to  get  the  fishes  do  its  job  and  if  I  find  it  slow,  then  I  will  remove  them  and  add  assassins.  But  glut  did  a  good  job  in  wiping  out  a  major  population.
