 hie,
this  is  supreet  from  punjab.  after  thorough  studying  on  internet  and  surfing  through  blog  ,  i  have  made  my  mind  to  make  my  55  gallon  aquarium  as  discus  fish  only  one.  i  am  thinking  of  buying  8  julienne  ¬†and  raise  them  ,the  tank  will  be  bare  bottom  and  i  have  read  all  about  the  water  change  routine.  i  am  like  almost  on  the  path  but  have  some  struggles  which  i  will  be  listing  bellow.  oh  just  for  info  -  i  am  new  in  discus  but  i  been  keeping  fishes  from  past  7  years.
 1.  i  have  diy  internal  sump  in  my  55  gallon  tank  and  it  has  submersible  power  head  with  great  turbulence  &  that  i  read  will  cause  the  discus  to  stress  out,  so  what  i  can  really  do  here?  i  have  one  sponge  filter  too  .
 2.  this  one  should  be  actually  the  first  concern,  i  don't  have  anybody  around  me  in  discus  ,  so  where  do  i  get  decent  fish  at  economic  price-see  i  am  student  and  can't  afford  expensive  onez.
 3.  thirdly,  in  my  mind  i  see  bare  bottom  tank  with  colourful  8  baby  discuss  (  i  mean  mix  colours-  some  yellow  ,blue, turquoise  etc)  ¬†along  with  some  cardinal  tetra  and  blue  background  but  i  know  not  every  discus  fish  strain  is  not  easy  for  first  timers,so  plz  guide  me  what  types  of  discus  i  can  have  realistically.
 4.  we  have  like  little  hard  water  supply  here,  like  white  strains  are  formed  at  top  of  aqaurium  glass  and  i  have  to  scrub  it  off,  will  this  water  be  ok  for  discus,  i  read  they  like  soft  and  acidic  type  but  i  also  read  that  now  captive  bred  discus  can  tolerate  vast  types  of  water  then  wild

 :
i  sincerely  need  help  from  experienced  persons  here,  as  of  now  i  am  frustrated  as  i  am  not  going  anywhere  with  my  discus  tank  Sad(

Hi,  Supreet  welcome  to  discus  hobby.

Discus,  are  not  hard  fish  to  keep  unless  you  provide  them  what  they  need.  Let  me  answer  you  one  by  one.

Water  :-  Discus  prefers  ph  of  6  with  less  TDS  for  good  health,  so  RO  water  is  always  best.  Make  sure  you  have  a  good  filtration  system,  as  you  already  said  that  you  have  sump  with  power  head  and  that  sounds  good.  Make  sure  that  the  power  head  you  use  is  enough  for  rotating  the  volume  of  water  in  main  tank  by  Min  three  rotation  an  hour,  55  g  is  close  to  200  liters  so  your  power  head  should  have  capacity  not  less  then  1000-1200  liter  per  hour.  Weekly  water  change  is  must,  since  you  have  sump  I  would  recommend  30%  WC  every  week.  Maintain  Temp  at  constant  30%,  avoid  using  heater  during  summer.

Invest  on  good  media  for  your  sump  because  this  is  going  to  decided  the  health  of  fish  health  and  amount  water  that  your  going  to  change  weekly.  For  media  you  can  contact  Aquashoppe  India  Pvt.  Ltd.  http://www.aquashoppe.in/

Tank  :-  For  55g  a  group  of  8  discus  with  good  tank  mates  like  Rummy  nose  tetras,Cardinal  Tetra,  A  L  series  Pleco  (if  it  fit  your  budget)  and  some  corydoras  (If  you  have  sand  in  tank,  it's   good  sand  sifter)  .  Make  sure  your  tank  have  lighter  background  preferably  white  color.  I  won't  personally  recommend  discus  in  fully  planted  tank  instead  you  have  some  nice  drift  woods  and  some  anubis  plants  tied  on  them.  And  bare  bottom  is  always  good  for  easy  maintenance.  You  can  also  have  a  thin  layer  of  fine  white  sand  if  that  interest  you.

Always  have  one  spare  tank  as  a  Quarantine  tank  (min  2ftx1ftxft  for  2  discus).  This  will  be  helpful  if  you  want  to  add  new  fish  once  after  your  main  tank  is  fully  set

Fish  :-  When  it  comes  to  discus,  I  recommend  you  to  buy  it  directly  from  reputed  breeder  or  farm,  instead  of  buying  from  any  Local  fish  store,  reason  is  you'll  know  the  quality  and  how  it's  maintained.  Buy  discus  at  size  3-  3.5"  anything  less  then  that  will  be  a  tough  job  as  juveniles  need  daily  water  change  for  fast  and  healthy  growing.  Buy  all  discus  at  once  instead  of  buying  each  a  month,  once  your  tank  is  fully  set  try  not  to  add  any  new  fish,  if  you  want  to  add,  then  makes  sure  you  QT  them  for  atleast  15  days  of,  Irrespective  of  where  you  buy  the  fish  from.

Hope  my  suggestions  are  useful,  cheers  and  happy  discus  keeping.  Cheer   Thumbs Up     Clapping
Pardon  me  if  there  is  any  typo  error.

If  you  want  to  buy  discus  you  can  refer  to  these  names  in  FB,  who  can  ship  to  your  location

The  other  aquarist,  Villupuram  (IP  discus  Indian  importer)
 Sam's  Discus,  Khopoli
Obviously  me  Filaial  Aquaics,  Madurai.  -  https://www.facebook.com/pg/filialaquatics/about/
