 Hello  mates

I  need  your  help  with  my  low  tech  tank  which  was  thriving  3  months  before  but  now  is  dying.

 Tank  specs:  36in(L)  x  18in(B)  x  18in(H)
 Lights  :  2x36W  PLL  +  1x24W  T5HO

 Dosage  per  week:  KNO3  -  1.5  teaspoon  x  2  +     KH2PO4  -  1  teaspoon  x  2  +  Seachem  Flourish  -  5  ml  x  2  +  Flourish  Iron  -  5  ml  x  1  +  Flourish  excel  -  2x  recommended  dose  daily

Tanks  was  started  using  pre-used  ADA  Amazonia  Soil  topped  with  new  9L  ADA  Amazonia.  Plants  almost  exploded  and  everything  was  going  well.

But  last  month  the  tank  was  infected  by  BGA,  newly  added  fish  started  dying  and  the  water  turned  brownish  yellow.  I  did  70%  water  change  and  added  another  filter  to  improve  flow.  BGA  started  receding  but  plant  growth  is  severely  affected.

At  about  the  same  time  when  the  tank  got  infected,  I  replaced  the  hood  with  a  reflector  hood.  I  don't  whether  that  has  caused  the  issue  or  my  lights  which  was  almost  a  year  old.  I  am  also  guessing  on  nutrient  deficiency.(  Possibly  Mg  since  I  am  not  dosing  it  separately.

 Please  give  you  comments.

 Hello  there!

Since  you  have  not  mentioned  anything  about  co2  injection,  can  it  be  assumed  that  you  do  not  have  it  currently?  If  thats  the  case  then  you  have  guessed  correctly  that  its  a  nutrient  deficiency  (of  CO2)...

Amazonia  is  literally  an  ammonia  bomb  during  the  initial  period.  You  have  to  use  it  to  your  advantage  by  planting  densely  /  high  levels  of  CO2  /  and  frequent  water  changes.  I'm  not  sure  if  you  have  sticked  to  that  routine.

Part  of  the  mess  could  also  be  because  of  summer  heat.  IME  plants  may  not  do  well  at  tank  temperature  above  32  deg.  Cool  it  down  with  some  DC  fans.

 Now  things  that  might  help  in  recovering;
 0)  If  No  CO2  injection,  then  get  one  ASAP  if  you  want  to  continue  with  high  lights  and  amazonia
 1)  Reduce  the  lights  -  Keep  photoperiod  for  not  more  than  7-8  hours
 2)  Trim  and  get  rid  off  dying  leaves  /  plants
 3)  Filter  maintenance  every  2-3  weeks  since  there'll  be  lot  of  organic  matter  from  dying  leaves  /  plants
 4)  DONT  overdose  excel.  It  may  or  may  not  kill  algae  but  it  has  the  potential  to  kill  plants.
 5)  Be  patient.  Things  will  become  more  stable  once  amazonia  has  leeched  out  most  of  the  ammonia

 Regards,

@Da_vipin..  Hi..  Yes  you  are  right..  No  CO2  injection..  Since  my  lights  are  around  1.92  watts  per  gallon,  I  am  just  doing  excel  for  now.  I  will  reduce  the  lights  further  to  check  for  any  improvement.

Photoperiod  is  7  hours.  Temperature  is  28  deg.  Using  DC  Fans..

Will  trim  dying  leaves,  clean  filters  and  reduce  excel  doisng  as  suggested.

 Thanks  a  lot.
