 Hi  All

Heiko  Bleher  has  completed  his  317th  Amazon  Expedition  just  a  few  days  ago  and  was  again  very  successful  in  his  discoveries.

He  found  among  others  a  new  neon  tetra  (the  photo  has  not  been  released  as  yet  he  informs  us.  It  is  his  new  "Fish  of  the  Century".  The  last  one  was  his  discovery  in  the  1990s  of  Melanotaenia  preacox,  or  better  known  as  the  "Dwarf  Neon  Rainbowfish",  which  has  been  produced  monthly  at  a  rate  of  5  million  pieces  and  sold  world  wide  from  a  mere  13  fishes  he  collected  and  brought  back  alive...

He  hopes  the  new  Neon  (brighter  in  colors  than  the  cardinal  tetra,  but  with  a  little  less  red),  will  be  a  similar  success  and  became  as  popular.

He  also  found  a  new  Discus  colour  variety  (see  photo  enclosed,  only  of  a  slightly  damaged  fish,  as  it  was  very  difficult  to  collect).  This  in  the  remote  Uauau  lake  is  very  dark,  almost  black,  but  has  the  nice  blue  colors  ?  specially  in  its  anal  fins.

Heiko  has  for  the  first  time  on  this  expedition  taken  11  people  with  him,  in  a  special  built  boat  (see  photos)  and  3  small  boats  to  penetrate  deep  into  the  jungle.  (Which  he  did,  at  day  and  night  search).  He  has  taken  this  Danish-Discus-Group,  because  they  had  asked  him  over  one  year  ago,  and  because  he  was  able  to  get  the  right  vessel  in  Manaus  to  go  were  he  wanted  to  go  (to  these  unexplored  lakes).

Maybe  he  will  take  in  the  future  some  other  groups,  as  people  who  come  along,  are  able  to  relax  and  enjoy  the  wild   -  untouched  ?  jungle  (as  Heiko  only  travels  to  such  places)  in  a  great  vessel  (it  even  as  air  condition  cabins  with  private  bath  and  all  the  comfort  one  can  ask  for),  while  he  goes  out  and  collects  and  researches...Have  a  look  at  some  of  the  photos  taken  and  enjoy  a  view  of  unexplored  Amazonian...

Any  questions  to  Heiko  Pleae  post...

 Regards

 Sujoy

Cool.  Is  the  new  neon  one  of  the  three  (or  4)  described  species  or  an  undescribed  species?

BTW,  the  fish  in  the  last  pic  is  an  Acaronia  nassa.

interesting  read,  airtickets  will  probably  be  more  expensive  than  the  trip  itself  :-(
...  But  getting  on  that  boat  would  be  a  super  expr...

This  is  a  totally  new  species  of  Neon  Tetra..  though  Heiko  in  his  trip  to  Rio  Jurua  in  1997  had  discovered  two  more  then.

Quote:

One  of  the  most  striking  discoveries  during  this  jungle  walk  was  this  luminating  small  tetra.  At  first  I  thought  I  had  found  Neon  Tetra  number  four!  (One  should  read  article  about  the  true  story  of  the  Neon  Tetra,  their  discovery  and  first  import  -  specially  because  Americans  still  believe  that  it  was  an  American  who  discovered  the  Cardinal  Tetra  and  that  is  not  true.  Actually  the  article  in  aqua  geographia  volume  7  was  written  by  the  world  authority  of  the  characiform  fishes  and  it  states  the  facts  of  each  of  the  3  Neon  Tetras  and  the  possible  4th  species).  But  it  seems  that  this  only  about  1.5  to  2.0  cm  long  beauty  belongs  to  the  Glauducandoline  group  and  might  possibly  be  aTyttocharax  sp.  Its  coloration  is  striking  and  the  "Neon-stripe"  always  present.  It  would  make  a  beautiful  addition  to  the  community-aquarium  and  enhance  any  aquarium  around  the  world,  as  it  did  with  the  Neon  Tetras  )p.  innesi,  P.  axelrodi  and  P.  simulans)  and  the  fantastic  Melanotaenia  praecox  -  the  fish  I  brought  back  from  Irian  Jaya,  new  Guinea,  which  is  becoming  the  most  sold  aquarium  fish  in  the  world.
