The  cheapest  natural  aquarium  was  my  dream  for  last  40  years.  I  found  it;  I  have  it,  and  want  to  share  it  with  you.

I  have  been  keeping  fishes  from  an  age  of  10.  I  am  56  now.  I  was  never  rich  and  always  wanted  something  beyond  my  means.  An  aquarium  does  not  involve  construction  cost  alone.  The  cost  of  maintaining  them  (that  does  not  include  your  personal  labours  which  is  paid  by  your  achievement)  is  also  a  huge  drain.

Free  lights  in  a  high  lighted  aquarium  are  so  easy.  Just  make  an  opening  on  an  appropriate  southern  wall  (if  you  live  in  the  northern  hemisphere)  and  project  a  RCC  shelve  6”  more  than  the  floor  depth  of  the  aquarium  you  want  and  the  length  and  height  according  to  your  desire.  Cover  the  floor  with  a  granite/glass  sheet,  the  three  outer  sides  with  3”  brick  work.  Use  1.5”  â€˜polyutherene  foam’  to  cover  the  three  outer  walls  before  building  your  aquarium.  Raise  the  height  of  the  outer  three  walls  good  3’  and  have  them  glazed  with  glass  panes.

Natural  sunlight  will  make  your  aquarium  a  well  lighted  one.  No  electric  bills.  No  timer  switches.  Free  for  a  lifetime.  Grow  your  plants  naturally  and  have  the  best  light  for  the  most  natural  colour  your  fishes.

My  neons  and  rainbows  are  glorious.

So  far  man  has  not  found  a  way  to  increase  sunlight  to  grow  plants.  The  question  is  not  of  money  or  saving  it.  Or  for  growing  plants  just  for  the  sake  of  growing.  We  could  grow  wheat  or  rice.
The  question  is  of  creating.  Creating  a  beautiful  piece  of  living  art.  And  that  piece  of  flourishing  nature  is  created  inside  our  living  room  or  bedroom  for  our  viewing  pleasure  and  relaxation.
 Lets  have  some  photographs.
No  personal  offence  meant.  Its  just  my  take  on  the  subject.  To  each  his  own.  Smile

 Sorry  folks

This  old  dog  takes  time  to  learn  new  tricks.  You  might  not  believe  it,  I  never  used  a  camera  in  my  life.  I  have  just  acquired  a  digital  Sony  camera,  and  will  have  to  get  the  hang  of  it.
I  am  also  new  to  the  PC  and  the  Internet,  give  me  some  directions  for  posting  pictures  I  take.
I  have  spent  better  part  of  my  life  in  places  which  did  not  have  electricity  or  running  water,  so  my  ignorance  of  many  things  that  come  naturally  to  you  folks.
Give  me  time,  I  will  post  the  pictures  you  desire.
You  can  also  understand  that  my  aquarium  designs  were  forced  on  me  by  my  living  habits.  I  have  retired  now  and  live  in  town  and  I  am  trying  to  learn  so  many  new  things,  not  the  least  of  which  is  how  to  converse.

Rahul  (retro_gk)  are  you  reading  this?
essabee,  I  respect  your  honesty  and  humble  nature  (I  guess  it  comes  with  age!)  in  today's  world  where  every  one  wants  to  out-smart  the  other  -  it  is  a  brave  thing  to  declare  that  you  are  ignorant.  But,  I  guess  you  are  just  plain  humble  and  down  to  earth  like  most  of  us  so  welcome  aboard  and  welcome  to  IAH!
I  have  to  see  your  set-up  to  fully  understand  it  but  I  guess  it  will  sure  be  interesting  to  see!
Waiting  for  your  pictures......................  Thumb Up

What  essabee  says  makes  perfect  sense  if  it  is  possible  to  setup  the  aquarium  to  get  direct  sunlight.  Planted  aquariums  needs  only  about  3-4  hours  of  direct  sunlight  and  diffused  sunlight  rest  of  the  daytime.

 Hi

Always  thought  of  something  like  this,  as  through  reflection  of  sunlight  through  mirrors  at  rt.  angles  the  light  can  be  diverted,  if  periscope  can  work  then  this  too  should...but  can  we  polarize  light  ?
