 Hello  all,

 I  plan  to  build  an  all  glass  aquarium  of  the  following  dimensions:
 Length  =  48  inches
 Width  =  18  inches
 Height  =  20  inches
 Glass  thickness  12mm

 Can  I  build  this  tank  without  any  bracing  at  all?  Is  it  safe?

 DIYers  please  advice.

 I  would  suggest  you  add  braces  on  the  top,  anuthing  above  18"  ,  a  top  brace  is  always  better,  else  one  can  see  a  lovely  bend  in  the  front  glass  Smile

 Everything  else  seems  fine  Smile,  all  the  best  Thumb Up

 well,  tetraman  I  think  you  might  just  be  able  to  do  it  using  12mm  glass.  It  is  do-able!

 I  am  getting  a  mixed  response  and  I  want  to  be  sure  before  I  go  ahead  with  the  making.

 Hayath  you  seem  cautious  and  Nauzer,  I  can  sense  some  reluctance  in  your  post.  Do  you  all  think  that  if  I  do  a  primeter  brace  and  avoid  the  front  to  back  cross  brace  it  would  be  safer.

 DJ_rocky  and  Nature_Lover,  you  both  are  pretty  confident  this  will  work.  Have  you  seen  or  made  tanks  without  bracing?

 I  want  the  tank  to  be  pretty  safe  and  at  the  same  time  have  a  clean  open  top.

 What  should  I  do?

 Tetraman,
   For  this  size  of  a  tank,  I  suppose  you  do  not  require  a  bracing  unless  you  have  a  very  ordinary  stand  which  could  help  the  glass  sag...

 Note  that  anything  which  is  >  48"  in  length  will  certainly  require  a  bracing...  But  for  just  a  48"  this  is  not  required  i  believe.

 Hi
 My  two  bit.
 Is  there  a  particular  reason  for  not  having  braces.
 In  tanks  longer  than  3  ft  I  think  braces  are  required.  If  we  use  thicker  glass  12  mm  as  you  are  doing  it  might  be  dispenced  with.
 But  if  a  tank  of  this  size  does  not  have  braces,  the  base  should  be  perfect,  and  the  tank  maker  should  be  well  experienced.
 To  have  a  complete  peace  of  mind  you  should  have  braces.
 A  unbraced  tank  of  this  size  will  always  always  bulge  in  the  middle,  wether  it  will  break  or  not  ,  cannot  be  answered.
 I  have  seen  tanks  5  ft  by  1.5  ft  by  1.5ft  built  in  6  mm  glass

 Hello  tetraman!

 I  have  done  the  bracing  along  the  length,  for  the  front  &  rear  glass  only.  Similar  to  what  Harshal  has  done,  the  only  difference  is  that  I’ve  stuck  the  support  glass  from  the  inside,  while  he  has  stuck  it  over  the  edge.

 SIDE  VIEW  for  the  Aquarium  at  the  Kormangala  Club

 I’ve  done  this  for  a  60”x24”x24”  &  72”x24”x24”  with  only  bracing  on  the  front  &  rear  pane.  Recently  I’ve  done  it  for  Raghu’s  (vraghu)  aquarium  too,  the  dimensions  of  his  Aquarium  are  48x24”x24”(Guess  I  remember  that  right)

 Bracing  for  side  panes  is  not  really  necessary  as  these  panes  are  generally  smaller  &  do  not  bulge.

 The  construction  of  stand  is  not  a  deciding  factor  for  whether  one  should  have  additional  support  closer  to  the  brim;  it’s  the  thickness  of  glass  &  the  height  of  water  column.

 Use  support  is  what  I  would  recommend,  better  to  be  safe  than  sorry  Unsure

 Actually  the  reluctance  was  relative  to  'who'  is  making  the  tank  if  the  fellow  is  experienced..............   Thumb Up   Thumb Up

 Thank  you  all  for  your  responses.

 This  will  be  a  open  top  planted  tank.  Unlike  hooded  tanks  where  the  top  edges  are  covered  by  the  hood,  the  edges  on  this  one  will  be  visible  and  I  wanted  it  to  look  clean  and  neat.  This  is  one  the  reasons  I  want  to  avoid  bracing.  The  other  is  ease  of  access  for  maintenance.

 However,  with  a  3  year  old  running  wild  inside  the  house,  I  have  decided  its  better  to  be  safe  than  sorry.  I  will  do  the  bracing.

 Question  is  what  difference  does  it  make  if  the  bracing  is  done  on  the  inside  edge  as  done  by  aquadeep  or  on  top  of  the  edges  as  done  by  Harshal?

 Hey  Nauzer...the  fellow  is  actually  me  Surprised  Shocked

 Experience  ?????  Well....I  built  one  tank  some  time  ago  for  a  friend.
