Sheer  coincidence  that  this  old  topic  resurfaced  on  the  eve  of  the  national  budget  being  presented  tomorrow  by  PC.  And  we  all  know  he  will  overshoot  it  by  the  end  of  the  year.  Economists  call  it  fiscal  deficit.  We  could  call  it  "fishcal"  deficit.

I  would  agree  with  Trevor  -  as  long  as  we  are  not  borrowing  to  do  what  we  want  to  do,  any  budget  is  fine.  But  that  old  Bengali  saying  -  "the  more  sugar  you  add  the  sweeter  it  gets"  is  not  necessarily  true  in  this  hobby.  A  lot  of  money  doesn't  necessarily  make  a  great  tank.  Having  said  that,  it  is  also  true  that  to  make  a  great  tank  you  need  to  spend  money.
I  was  reading  some  of  the  tricks  we  husbands  play  to  hide  costs.  My  problem  is  my  wife  happens  to  be  a  banker  and  knows  every  penny  that  I  earn  and  spend.

Therefore  Trevor  -  no  I  don't  borrow.  I  steal  it.  Unfortunately  it  happens  to  be  my  own  money.  I  love  that  signature  that  someone  uses  here  -  Me  lord!  My  planted  tank  made  me  do  it".

 Well
After  making  a  new  year's  resolution  of  not  increasing  new  tanks.  I  have  already  set  up  two  tubs  of  plants  in  addition  to  2  ponds  outside.  A  15g  for  my  oscar  juv,  and  just  brought  a  eheim  2224  Chuckle  ,  and  this  is  only  second  month  of  the  year.

I  have  a  hole  in  my  pocket  :-)
If  you  love  this  hobby,  you  bet,  you  should  be  prepared  to  spend.
Not  discouraging  the  ones,  who  are  starting  off  initially.
Just  informing  them  that  this  can  get  pretty  nasty  hehe

LOL,  the  more  you're  involved,  the  more  you  learn.
the  more  you  learn,  the  more  you  understand  how  much  you've  already  spent  being  a  nut.

It  all  depends  on  luck,  some  guys  make  small  mistakes  and  some  big  and  land  up  re-doing  the  whole  aquarium,  some  get  greedy  like  me,  just  leaves  me  wanting  more  everyday.

I  think  it  all  depends  on  how  you  feel,  and  what  our  requirements  are.
low-tech  tank,  fish-only  tanks  can  be  managed  without  much  expensive.

Definately  this  one  hobby  that  isnt  going  to  harm  you're  health,  then  why  not  pursue,  regardless  of  your  budget.  I'd  simply  say  plan  a  month  ahead  prior  to  any  purchase.

by  the  way,  I  agree  we  all  lie  (at  different  levels)  to  their  spouse.  I  am  little  bit  lucky  here  as  my  wife  likes  aquarium  (man  it  took  a  long  time)..  She  wants  me  to  buy  the  imported  aquarium  which  she  has  seen  in  the  internet  and  she  is  hell  bent  of  getting  one  to  replace  my  locally  built  one  which  in  her  terms  doenst  fit  the  decor...

I  am  looking  for  get  another  assembled  and  also  keep  the  existing  one..  dont  know  what's  gonna  happen..

Sadly  I  do!!  my  Semi-Planted  tank  in  Pune  is  in  a  Rented  house.  Sad
BUt  I  have  a  5x3x3(Oacar,  Aratus,  and  Banana  Chiclids.)
   a  3x1x1   with  convicts  breeding
 and  a  pond  with  randoms.
If  it  counts  a  40x20x6  Pool  at  the  farm  which  has  Koi's  breeding.
Don't  I  really  want  to  move  back!!
   Sad
Anyhow  need  to  buy  a  place  in  Pune  soon..

my  budget  was  around  700-800  on  the  whole  including  internal  filter, fishes,a  second  hand  tank, plants, light  bulbs  and  bogwood.but  i  feel   a  minimum  of  1k  will  be  very  good  for   a  starter  with  a  2  footer.any  thing  less  tank  size  has  to  be  reduced  and  other  constraints  too!

 Hi

I  agree  with  Natbox  (yeah  its  me  again!!!)  one  can  start  with  that  low.  I  did.

I  lie  to  my  wife  about  my  aquarium  expenses.  But  that  is  turning  out  to  be  difficult  now...  she  has  started  her  own!!!  I  am  just  dying  to  hear  the  old  prices  from  a  new  mouth.

Asking  the  gurus  here...  these  aquarium  expenses  are  not  tax-exempt  are  they?  Anybody  tried  claiming  tax  benefits.  I  want  to.

I  belive  in  in  budgets  and  i  also  feel  that  fiskkeeping  should  not  become  an  obsession.Your  family  comes  first.Be  faithful  to  your  wife  and  responsible  to  your  parents  and  kids.Fish  keeping  is  just  a  hobby.Never  lie  to  your  wife  on  that  score. Its  always  better  to  lead  a  frugal  ,truthful  and  simple  life.SAMI
