 Hey,

This  post  is  not  anything  very  important.  But,  i'm  still  curious  to  know  about  the  formalities  of  getting  Import  &  Export  License.

Further,  can  some  one  tell  me,  how  many  in  India  have  these  Import  License.  As  far  i  know,  very  few  have  them  is  it?.

I  heard,  it  is  easier  to  get  an  Export  License.  The  fee  for  processing  is  about  Rs.5000/-  and  MPEDA  might  help  regarding  this.

 Any  suggestions  are  welcome  ,

 Thanks,
 Jacob.

 Hi  Indianoscar,

I  have  heard  that  Redlin  Aquarium  in  chennai  has  import  licence.  Smile

Might  be  you  should  contact  them  to  get  more  details.

 Thanks

 Yes,

I've  heard  about  them.  Maybe  Southern  India  Aquarist  too?  is  it?.

Ks,  do  you  know  anyone  else  with  import  license?

Inbetween,  DJ  ROCKY,  can  you  tell  me  the  formalities  involved  when  you  got  this  Import  License.  Is  this  a  move  through  state  /  central  government?  Can  you  guide  me,  where  to  apply  for  this?.  Please

Many  say  Redlin  and  Southern  India  have  import  licence  for  live  fish.
So  where  do  they  have  the  quarantine  facilities  for  the  imports.
 Many  have  an  export  licence.
But  I  doubt  even  a  single  commercial  guy  in  India  has  a  valid  commercial  import  licence  for  live  fish.  This  is  my  personal  opinion.
A  rare  and  scarce  valuable  document  will  not  be  hidden  but  will  be  flaunted  in  the  shop  for  all  to  see.
Soon  all  our  good  carrier  friends  will  be  out  of  business.
 Could  be  wrong  though.

 Hi,

Trevour  is  right,  import  of  ornmaetal  fishes  legally  is  almost  impossible  due  to  wild  life  protection  laws...These  guys  do  not  have  an  import  license  ,  they  use  carriers..  this  fact  i  surely  know  for  REDLIN  ....and  so  does  everybody  else  as  well....

 Regards

Well....  In  my  opinion  import  licence  requires  when  u  r  planning  to  import  in  Huge  Quantity...  We  have  never  shown  our  import  licence  to  custome  officers  and  they  never  asked  us  for  that.  We  go  Bangkok  as  a  carrier  on  a  tourist  visa..  Smile...  but  importing  live  fishes  is  not  that  much  easy,  it  requires  a  lot  of  documents  from  Agriculture  Department  from  both  side  ..  Thumb Up

TREVOR...  u  r  right...  by  the  legal  way  we  cant  import  any  Live  Fish,  but  we  are  importing  these  on  a  special  permit  given  by  the  department  of  AGRICULTURE...  Smile.............  but  if  u  make  any  mistake,  these  all  will  be  end..

Like  on  these  days  importing  any  live  fishes  in  Calcutta  Airport  has  been  banned  by  last  October  06...  &  we  are  facing  a  lot  of  problem,  but  still  somehow  import  is  going  on..  Thats  it...  I  cant  say  any  more  of  it...  Wall Bang  Â Drool

That  is  a  major  problem  with  a  host  of  controls  in  Indian  Laws.
Legally  you  cannot  do  this  or  or  that,  illegally  you  can  do  anything.
This  way  everyone  is  happy  except  the  poor  consumer  who  has  to  bear  cost  of  everything  (including  suvidha  shulk)  and  uncertain  quality  goods.
Why  can't  we  have  sane  laws  which  allow  us  to  do  things  legally.
Banning  anything  is  a  sure  way  of  driving  it  underground.

 Sandeep,
Maybe  our  import  laws  are  working  towards  our  nations  good.  Though  could  be  unintentional.
Imagine  our  rivers  and  water  bodies  filled  with  strange  and  fierce  imports.  Sad
Wiping  out  our  native  and  indigenous  fish  population.  Sad
Hundreds  of  profit  crazy  licensed  importers.  Shocked

In  the  meanwhile  let  us  offer  a  silent  prayer  to  our  brave  carriers  and  our  lax  custom  officers.  (The  custom  officers  may  be  lax  knowing  the  goods  are  going  to  some  hobbyist  and  will  cause  no  harm.)

 May  they  tribe  increase.
 Kissing

To  import  anything  officially  as  a  business  you  need  a  permission  from  the  office  of  the  DGFT  (director  general  of  foreign  trade).  That  office  gives  you  a  code  against  which  you  import  and  show  that  code  to  the  customs  when  your  shipment  arrives  (without  the  code  customs  will  impose  a  fine).  Joyban  has  quoted  that  fish  is  "restricted"  item.  The  word  restricted  item  and  banned  items  are  different.  Restricted  means  you  need  special  permissions,  licence  etc  (for  example,  if  you  are  a  registered  research  organisation  then  you  can  perhaps  import  it  with  restrictions  etc  etc.  Banned  means  you  just  can't  import  -  no  body  can  -  for  example  nuclear  reactor  or  cannon  -  just  an  example).
Both  DGFT  and  Customs  are  under  central  government.  Quarantine  is  a  state  subject  and  they  come  into  the  picture  once  the  wildlife/plants  clear  customs  hurdle.
So,  perhaps  you  cannot  "officially"  import  ornamental  fish.  But  no  harm  finding  it  out  officially  from  the  DGFT.
I  have  a  friend  in  the  airport  customs  who  said  hobbyists  bringing  in  a  few  fish  for  personal  hobby  are  not  stopped  normally.  I  am  sure  they  close  their  eyes  and  put  their  hand  forward  when  non  hobbyists  bring  in  bulk.
Another  problem  in  India  is  the  different  interpretation  of  the  same  law  by  different  officials  of  different  departments.  Slightly  off  track   -   recently  I  got  a  GPS  from  abroad  and  someone  told  me  you  need  a  licence  to  use  it.  Ridiculous  but  true.  I  spent  perhaps  a  thousand  bucks  on  phone  calls  to  various  offices  in  Delhi  just  to  find  out  how  to  get  the  licence  to  use  it  and  came  across  a  thousand  different  views  on  the  subject  -  all  from  very  high  ranking  government  officials.  The  last  guy  gave  me  the  ultimate  wisdom  -  "up  use-to  kijiye  baad  mein  dekha  jayega".
So  we  are  lucky  that  we  don't  need  a  licence  to  have  an  aquarium.  If  we  discuss  it  too  much  they  might  consider  introduction.  Dog  owners  as  it  is  need  one.

 Brojo,
Just  for  your  information  we  have  a  top  airport  customs  officer  as  a  regular  member  of  IAH.  He  is  a  keen  hobbyist  and  aquarist  too,  plus  a  friend.  Smile
