 Hi  All,

How  long  should  a  4.5  kg  co2  cylinder  should  last  with  a  bubble  rate  of  1-2  BPS.
I  know  1-2  BPS  might  sound  odd  but  i  cannot  set   my  needle  valve  to  release  the  Co2  at  a  constant  rate.

 Thanks
 Rohan

5  months  easily  on  continuous  run.  In  case  you  are  shutting  down  in  the  night..then  more.  Check  that  there  is  no  leakage  from  the  joints  with  soap  water  to  prevent  any  wastage.

If  you  are  running  it  24x7,  approximately  7+  months.  PM  me  if  you  are  looking  for  a  good  needle  valve.

 Hi,

I  have  a  3kg  cylinder  and  am  using  a  JBJ  regulator  with  a  solenoid.  When  I  initially  set  up  the  tank  in  Nov'08,  I  used  to  bubble  the  Co2  @  2  bps  and  the  cylinder  lasted  me  till  Jan'09.i.e  approx  3  months.  The  Co2  feeding  is  exactly  for  10  hours/day

When  I  got  it  refilled  in  Feb'09  and  re-connected  the  setup,  the  inline  bubble  counter,  which  is  on  the  regulator  after  the  solenoid,  leaked  and  my  solenoid  burnt  off.

I  got  my  Co2  vendor  to  replace  the  solenoid  with  a  local  brand  as  it  would  have  been  difficult  to  procure  the  original  German  solenoid  at  a  short  notice.  However  the  cylinder  got  empty  within  25  days.  I  suspected  under  filling  of  the  cylinder.  I  had  not  checked  the   weight  post  refilling.  I  got  it  refilled  again  on  20th  March.  I  ensured  correct  gross  weight  and  got  it  checked  at  the  workshop  itself  for  any  leaks  around  the  neck.

When  I  fixed  the  regulator  and  opened  the  cylinder  tap,  after  the  first  few  turns  of  the  tap,  there  was  a  hissing  sound  and  gas  escaped.  However  after  I  completely  opened  the  tap  the  hiss  stopped  and  there  was  no  leak.  I  tried  closing  and  opening  it  again.  The  same  happened.  Then  I  doubly  ensured  using  a  soap  solution  and  found  no  leaks.

After  I  connected  the  regulator  setup  and  switched  on  the  solenoid,  the  gas  escaped  from  the  solenoid  and  I  could  clearly  hear  the  hiss.  I  immediately  disconnected  the  setup  and  gave  it  to  the  vendor  for  rectification.  He  did  it  for  me  and  told  me  that  sometimes  the  diaphragm  in  the  solenoid  gets  stuck.  He  also  tested  it  on  his  cyliner  for  any  leaks.

Each  time  I  got  it  refilled  the  pressure  shows  1100  lb/sq.inch.  However  within  20  days  it  starts  dropping.  I  would  have  increased  the  bubbling  rate  slightly  but  even  at  the  current  rate  my  estimation  is  that  it  should  last  atleast  for  2  months

However  the  cylinder  pressure  today  is  500  lb/sq.inch.  On  Sunday  it  was  700  lb/sq.inch.  I  have  checked  the  complete  apparatus  again,  right  upto  the  output  of  the  plastic  bubble  counter  I  am  now  using,  with  Vim  dishwash  liquid  solution.

 No  visible  leaks!!  Surprised

 Please  help.

Did  you  check  all  possible  joints  ?
When  you  say  there  was  a  hissing  sound  when  the  tap  opens,  Could  you  locate  the  leaking  point  ?

There  is  a  leak  in  the  cylinder's  main  valve.  I  had  the  same  problem.  Get  it  replaced  with  a  new  valve  or  get  the  valve  repaired.

 Hi  Rohan,

Yes.  I  have  checked  all  the  joints.  The  hiss  was  from  the  tap  on  top  of  the  cylinder.

However  it  starts  only  at  one  particular  position  i.e  after  1  anticlock  turn  and  stops  after  3  turns.

After  complete  opening  of  the  tap,  I  checked  with  a  soap  solution  and  there  was  no  bubbling.  I  guess  the  bottom  of  the  tap  is  like  a  piston  and  at  a  particular  angle  a  gap  forms  at  the  top  from  where  the  gas  leaks.  I  can  feel  the  leaking  gas  at  that  particular  stage.

Neelesh  the  packing  around  the  stem  of  the  cylinder  valve  is  leaking.
What  you  did  is  correct,  open  the  cylinder  fully,  then  the  valve  will  back  shut  and  stop  the  leak.

It  is  always  better  to  keep  the  cylinder  valve  fully  shut  or  fully  open,  to  avoid  leakage  through  the  packing.

 Hi  rohan,
i  bought  4.5  kg  cylinder  in  the  month  of  november,  currently  its  on  1bps.  It  has  lasted  till  now  and  dont  know  how  long  it  will.  So  i  think  it  will  last  5  months  minimum.

 Thanks  Madan,

Any  guess  whether  I  am  encountering  leakages  or  is  it  consumption  ?

 Hi  Preetam,

Do  you  mean  the  tap  which  is  on  top  of  the  cylinder  ?
If  the  gas  leaks  from  there  then  wouldn'  t  the  soap  solution  detect  it?

I  had  checked  applying  soap  solution  all  around  the  tap  and  the  neck  of  the  cylinder  after  completely  opening  the  tap.

I  wouldn't  mind  changing  the  complete  valve  if  that's  the  solution

Neelesh  what  you  did  is  right.  You  will  detect  a  leak  around  the  cylinder  valve  with  soap  solution.

Changing  the  valve  is  the  only  lasting  solution.

If  you  find  no  leak  there,  but  still  have  an  empy  cylinder  pretty  fast,  1-2  months  is  fast,  then  you  have  a  leak  elsewhere.

Another  point  do  you  weigh  your  cylinder  before  and  after  a  refill  ?
The  guy  may  be  short  changing  with  gas.

 Hi  Madan,

This  would  be  my  third  refill  in  as  many  months.  I  will  ask  the  vendor  to  change  the  valve  although  the  soap  solution  check  earlier  had  not  detected  any  leak.
The  cylinder  pressure  is  450  lb/sq.inch  as  of  now.  Would  it  be  feasible  to  do  a  soap  solution  check  now  ?
Since  there  would  be  no  liquid  Co2  in  the  cylinder  will  it  detect  a  leak,  if  any,  at  this  low  pressure?

It  will  detect  the  leak,  if  there  is  one,  but  then  the  packing  might  be  leaking  only  at  high  pressure  and  not  be  leaking  now

People  do  not  have  the  correct  packing  to  repair  the  valve,  better  get  a  new  valve  fixed,  cheaper  and  less  worries  in  the  long  run.

 Thanks  Madan,

Will  take  your  advice  and  go  for  a  valve  replacement  rather  than  break  my  head  to  detect  the  leak.

It  had  not  shown  any  leak  when  the  cylinder  was  full.  However  since  it  was  not  100%  leakproof,  as  it  leaked  during  opening  of  the  tap,  I  will  take  a  shot  at  it  assuming  its  faulty.
If  the  next  refill  lasts  longer  then  I  can  safely  conclude  that  the  valve  was  faulty.  If  not,  will  keep  this  thread  alive  Smile

Anywhich  ways  will  post  my  findings  here
