 Hello  all,
I  have  started  a  marine  tank  on  22/04/07,  This  tank  as  I  planned  it  would  be  a  FOWLR.  I  picked  live  rocks  and  sand  from  a  existing  tank(Pradeep’s).

 Description:-
The  present  tank  is  36x18x18  glass
 40  kg  of  live  rock
 3”  of  live  sand
Aqua  C  remora  (borrowed  from  pradeep)  connected  to  2000  l/h  powerhead
800  l/h  powerhead  for  water  circulation  (connected  to  a  wavemaker)

 Setup:-
 22/04/07
I  got  all  the  live  rock  and  sand  from  pradeep  place  which  is  around  10  min  drive  from  my  house,  Transported  the  live  sand  in  buckets  and  the  rocks  in  plastic  bags.
Put  in  the  sand  and  then  the  rocks  into  my  tank  which  was  half  full  and  got  the  protein  skimmer  running
No  aquascaping  done,  just  placed  all  the  rock  on  the  sand  bed,  The  water  was  very  murky  which  started  to  clear  up  in  a  few  hours.  After  about  5  hours  the  protein  skimmer  started  pulling  out  coffee  coloured  stuff,  It  pulled  out  around  50-100  ml  of  this  stuff  and  then  nothing  for  the  rest  of  the  day.  No  visible  signs  of  any  die-off  or  dis-integration

The  below  test  was  done  prior  to  adding  LR  and  LS  (just  a  benchmark):-
 Ammonia                             0
 Nitrate                                    0
 Nitrite                                      0
 KH                                            300
 pH                                             8.4
 salinity/viscosity            1.023

 23/04/07
Got  a  DYMAX  powerhead  rated  at  800  l/h  and  installed  it  into  the  tank,  I  connected  this  power  head  to  a  wavemaker(I  guess),  this  is  a  mechanical  contraption  which  turns  the  direction  of  flow  using  the  powerhead’s  flow.
  Nothing  in  the  protein  skimmer

 Ammonia                             0
 Nitrate                                    between  10-20  ppm
 Nitrite                                      0
 KH                                            300
 pH                                             8.4
 salinity/viscosity            1.023

Put  a  Three  Spot  Domino  Damsel  or  a  Sailfin  Molly  for  cycling  the  tank  water.  Thumb Up

 Give  it  a  little  time.
The  ammonia  will  spike  as  the  organisms  on  the  LR  produce  waste.  There  will  be  dieoff  also  causing  the  spike.

Don't  put  any  fish  in  unless  they  are  quarantined  and  you  are  sure  of  their  health.

 Are  you  getting  skimmate  yet?

 Hi  Rahul,
welcome  to  the  salted  side  of  the  hobby!
though  I  have  not  seen  the  set  up  and  the  live  rocks  I  presume  that  Pradeep  has  parted  with  his  already  cured  LR??  If  so  there  is  little  chance  of  a  die-off  that  is  normally  triggered  in  newly  acquired  uncured  live  rocks.

Quote:
3”  of  live  sand

this  can  be  a  good  subject  for  debate!

I  have  not  seen  Ammonia  and  nitrite  spike,  Any  thoughts  ?

you  answered  your  own  question  buddy   Smile   if  there  is  no  ammonia  production  how  will  you  get  a  nitrate  reading?  I  guess  you  probably  missed  it  and  it  did  not  bother  you  much  because  you  have  used  cycled  LR  (my  guess)
Now  I  think  it  is  time  to  introduce  your  first  fish  just  a  couple  of  them  -  clowns,  damsels  etc.  you  know  the  usual  beginner  fish  and  keep  them  for  about  a  month  meantime  keep  monitoring  the  parameters  and  you  will  not  go  wrong!

Quote:
No  pradeep,  No  skimmate  yesterday  and  today.

that  is  because  your  tank's  ammonia  production  is  minimal  and  more  over  you  are  not  adding  any  feed  nor  your  LR  is  going  through  a  major  phase  of  die-off.
 wish  you  all  the  best!

Thanks  For  you  input  Nauzer/pradeep/  rocky.

Well  i  cant  believe  that  my  tank  has  almost  finished  cycling  :-).

Though  i  dont  want  to  add  any  fish  right  away.  I  will  wait  till  i  get  a  good/healthy  fishes.

I  want  this  tank  to  have  only  6  chromis  OR  6  cardinals  +  1  clown.

So  is  it  okay  for  me  to  run  the  tank  by  adding  some  dead  shrimp/  fish  food  (to  keep  the  bacteria  and  the  many  small  creatures  on  the  live  rock  alive)?

 Hi,
I  have  read  in  some  books  that  if  you  are  adding  chromis,  add  in  odd  numbered  lots.
 regards,
 rk

Sir,  Bangalore  is  getting  warmer  year  after  year.  And  around  this  20th,  the  day  temp  was  32C  and  27C  at  night,  probably  due  to  the  rain.  Hence  the  SG  is  a  bit  too  high,  i  feel.  I  usually  maintain  SG  at  1.024,  only  if  the  temp  is  below  26C.  If  you  ask  me  whats  the  relation  between  the  temp  and  SG,  then  I  dont  know  what  really  happens.  But  it  has  been  working  really  well  for  me.

 Hi  Shankar,
    Thank  you  for  your  input.
How  much  do  you  think  i  should  keep  my  SG,  My  tank  temp  varies  b/w  26  and  27  c.

How  do  i  reduce  the  SG  gradually  in  my  tank  ?  by  dripping  fresh  water  into  the  tank?

Is  there  some  good  article  for  me  to  read  up  on  this  subject?

 Thanks  &  regards.
