 Hi,
Mine  is  66G  moderately  dense  planted  tank  running  on  144  W  of  6500K  lights  and  presussised  Co2  with  1-2BPS.
I  have  been  following  EI  method  and  was  having  OK  results  with  it.
Off  late  my  tank  turns  hazy  on  the  4th  day  of  the  cylcle.(starting  on  saturday  of  any  week)
I  always  thought  it  was  my  excessive  dosing  (precisely  the  micros:PMDD)  and  would  do  a  more  than  50%  WC  on  saturday.
Last  week  it  started  turning  hazy  on  tuesday  itself  and  worsened  by  friday.  I  did  two  water  changes  on  saturday  as  well  as  sunday  and  it  looked  fine  again.
This  time  i  dosed  the  macros  on  sunday  and  today  morning  i  dosed  the  very  less  quantity  of  PMDD  and  i  found  the  water  to  be  hazy  when  i  came  back  from  work.
The  PMDD  has  been  made  out  of  1-2  Microssol-B  added  to  1  ltr  of  aquaguard  water.

Is  it  something  to  do  with  the  potency  of  Microsol-B?
Is  there  any  expiry  date  for  the  same  ?
The  fertilizer  pack  is  almost  2  years  old  now  and  has  been  barely  consumed  more  than  few  Tsps:)

 Thanks  in  advance

It  is  not  Microsol  B  that  is  the  problem.

Your  Macros  maybe  less,  what  are  you  dosing  as  Macros?

 Thanks.
I  looked  up  the  reference  chart  in  the  simplified  version  of  EI  by  Greg.
 I  dose  3/4th  Tsp  of  Kno3,1/4th  Tsp  of  K2So4,and  about  3/16th  Tsp  of  kh2Po4.
Please  dont  ask  me  me  how  do  i  measure  3/16th  Tsp  Smile  I  do  it  by  gut  feeling.

It  could  be  a  bacterial  bloom.  which  if  it  is,  is  nothing  to  worry  about  it  will  clear  by  itself  in  10-12  days..  but  you  say  that  it  get's  worse  with  time  which  indicates  that  it  could  be  free  floating  algae  (note  that  it  is  not  always  green),  and  the  best  way  to  treat  it  would  be  a  complete  blackout  for  a  couple  of  days.  here's  a  good  link  describing  the  correct  procedure:

Then  your  macros  too  are  in  order.

Is  there  anyway  some  Ammonia  could  have  crept  in.  I  have  had  this  problem  when  a  few  fish  died  and  were  rotting  amongst  the  plants  for  a  few  days.

Secondly  is  your  CO2  level  up  to  20-30  ppm?

My  feeling  is  that  as  Harsh  suggested,  it  is  due  to  bacterial  bloom  or  microscopic  algae  bloom.

Normally  this  should  go  away  on  its  own  after  few  days,  say  10  to  15  days  when  your  filter  will  be  matured  enough  to  handle  the  organic  or  nutrient  load.  You  have  not  mentioned  your  filtration  system.  If  you  have  option,  increase  the  filter  media  volume  and  ensure  slow  filtration  over  a  large  media.

Keep  on  dosing  the  nutrients  despite  haziness,  otherwise  your  plants  may  suffer.

 Regards
 Rana

I  dont  have  any  idea  on  the  ammonia  part.I  use  a  laterite  base  and  its  been  8-9  months  that  the  substrate  has  been  setup  though.
I  have  never  tested  the  co2  concentration.
What  is  your  doubt  on  co2?Higher  concentration  or  lower?
Its  been  a  week  or  little  more  than  i  started  using  the  new  Dymax  diffuser.
But  this  problem  started  ocurring  few  days  before  that.
When  I  had  setup  the  tank,  i  had  a  similar  problem  with  the  PMDD  solution.
Few  months  after  the  solution  is  prepared,  I  see  some  orangish  deposits  at  the  bottom  of  the  bottle.
Last  time  I  used  such  a  solution  and  some  cobweb  kinda  deposits  showed  up  within  18  hrs  of  the  adding  the  PMDD.
I  got  rid  of  that  PMDD  and  prepared  a  fresh  one  which  worked  well.
Now  i  suspect  if  something  is  wrong  with  the  PMDD  again.

Any  idea  whats  with  orangish  deposits  ?Does  anybody  else  gets  that?

 @Harsh
I  am  master  of  GreenWater.  LOL  !!
In  all  previous  occurances,  the  water  turned  green  at  alarming  pace  after  it  showed  up  first.
So  my  guess  is  this  is  not  green  water. Thanks  for  the  link  though:)

 Well.
I  dont  have  any  filteration  in  there.Smile
I  use  an  internal  filter's  powerhead  to  circulate  the  water.
The  media  is  removed  and  I  have  plonked  in  the  Co2  tube  in  the  media  cavity  to  make  a  quick  DIY  diffuser:)
I  am  yet  to  make  efective  use  of  my  new  Co2  Diffuser. So  till  then,  this  arrangement  continues.
I  hope  this  be  a  bacterial  bloom.
But  what  surprises  me  is  that  the  haziness  shows  up  after  I  add  the  Micros.

Is  there  any  shelf  like  for  the  micro  or  macros  ??  When  is  it  rendered  useless  ?I  think  my  microsol  B  is  probably  2  years  old  too....

 Hi  Rohan,

I  had  the  same  problem  with  my  22  gal  tank  where  this  algae  just  kept  on  erupting  even  after  the  water  change.  Is  your  tank  exposed  to  sunlight?

I'm  not  an  expert  when  it  comes  to  fertilizers  but  this  what  I  do,  instead  of  making  a  solution  I  add  a  pinch  of  Kno3,  K2So4,and  kh2Po4  after  every  water  change.  I  dont  use  micro  on  the  day  I  do  the  above  mentioned.

You  can  try  this  method  as  it  had  helped  me  and  I  dont  have  any  problem  with  my  tank.

 regards,
 Surya

 Well.
Thanks  surya,But  I  am  not  convinced  it  is  algae  in  the  first  place.
The  tank  is  not  exposed  to  direct  sunlight.
And  we  both  are  following  a  differnt  dosing  regime.  I  am  following  the  EI  method  which  tried  and  tested  by  many.I  did  have  problems  before  but  whatever  problems  existed  had  some  basis. But  this  is  one  problem  that  puzzles  me.

How  many  bubbles  per  have  you  set  it  at.  1  bubble  per  2  seconds  should  be  enough  with  the  Dymax  diffuser.

My  PMDD  was  last  mixed  in  July  2003,  I  mixed  6  liters  at  one  go  and  I  am  still  using  the  same.  No  issues.

 Rohan,
Since  you  have  an  internal  filter  with  no  media  in  it,  May  be  its  hinting  me  a  Bacterial  bloom  as  others  are  saying.

I  do  not  think  that  Microsol  has  a  shelf  life.  I  have  seen  a  gelatineous  solution  if  Epsom  salt  is  dissolved  with  Microsol  B.  Accidentally  i  mixed  Mgso4  soln  with  Microsol  B  and  had  kept  it  unused  as  i  had  the  gravel  bed  doing  the  fertiliser  work.  When  i  looked  at  it  some  3-5  months  later  i  found  that  the  gel  sought  of  particles  in  the  dissolved  solution.

Can  you  let  us  know  your  dosgae  of  Epsome  salt  if  you  are  dosing  it.  This  might  also  be  casuing  the  bloom.

 Hi
I  use  a  combo  of  microsol  B  and  MGSO4  for  my  PMDD  and  have  no  problem.

I  have  seen  haziness  in  water   If  there  is  a  lot  of  decaying  plant  matter,
you  have  not  mentioned  if  you  have  any  fish  in  the  tank?
also  i  always  thought  that  PMDD  is  dosed  just  before  lights  out.
Just  a  doubt  could  there  be  a  problem  with  the  water  source?
another  doubt  could  your  filtration  be  a  little  to  much  for  your  tank  and  could  it  be  pulling
up  the  latrite  (  if  any  used).

My  doubts  may  be  the  most  basic.
Some  times  it  is  the  basics  are  what  get  overlooked.
