 For  general  Information  only   Chuckle

I  just  got  my  dose  of  Flubenol  15  from  Flubenol  15

A  whitish  powder,  it  is  supposedly  a  very  good  drug,  pretty  cheap  and  postage  is  also  extremely  reasonable.

The  Packaging  claims,  it's  a  one  time  treatment.  Expiry  date  is  05/2014  -  wow,  a  decent  quantity  can  be  stocked  up  for  use.

10  times  overdose  will  not  affect  Fish,  Plants  or  the  Filter  bacteria.  Takes  full  effect  in  24  hrs.

Kills  snails  -  and  dead  snails  will  pollute  the  water  -  better  watch  out.  In  that  case  it  will  kill  shrimps  too  and  all  your  leaches  and  a  whole  lot  of  nuisance  critters.

I'll  use  it  a  bit  later  and  revert  if  there  is  any  screwup.

 Madan,
Checked  this  drug  on  the  web  and  felt  expensive  compared  to  GD  which  is  available  locally,  Is  this  available  just  like  GD  or  as  any  other  forms  in  drug  stores  and  hence  are  cheaper  ????

I  reacall  some  time  back  that  Nag  was  mentioning  about  Garlic  also  having  similar  properties  to  de-worm,  Is  that  true,  If  so  can  you  please  share  your  experiences......

 Regards
 Raghu

 What  is  GD?

Garlic  does  not  deworm  at  all.  Anyone  who  says  garlic  deworms  does  not  know  what  he  is  talking.

Garlic  slows  down  the  reproductive  cycle  so  that  the  infection  does  not  blow  up.

For  garlic  to  be  effective  you  have  to  crush  a  fresh  clove  and  mix  the  juice  -  the  oily  substance  -  with  food  a  few  minutes  before  feeding.

Adding  garlic  juice  and  freezing  your  food  will  not  work.

As  for  using  a  blender  to  extract  garlic  juice,  try  it,  it  will  never  work.

Raghu  Glutraldehyde  does  not  get  rid  of  tapeworms  and  flukes,  it  is  not  an  anti-helminthic.

 Hi  Madan

I  missed  the  link  in  your  first  post.

And  yes  Mumbai-discus,  it  should  cure  flukes.  The  class  of  chemicals  this  belongs  to  will  get  rid  of  almost  all  worms.

I  tried  out  Flubenol  15  dosing  on  two  of  my  tanks  with  the  wild  caught  corys.

The  snails  seem  to  be  doing  well  after  18  hours.  The  fish  seem  happy,  and  all  looks  ok.  Chuckle

I  guess  it  kills  snails  slowly,  and  it  is  not  an  instant  bullet.

 Madan,
Check  these  links  out..  There  are  many  internal  links  to  it  as  to  why  GD  kills  worms  and  how..

 http://indianaquariumhobbyist.com/community/modules.php?name=Forums&file=modules&name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=5528&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15

There  are  internal  links  in  that  thread,  I  did  an  experiment  of  snails  blood  worms  &  earthworms  at  different  conc  of  GD   though  have  not  expermented  with  Tapeoworms  i  feel  the  result  should  be  the  same.

All  of  these  guys  vanished  in  my  Anubias  tank  within  10  mins  of  GD  addition,  I  suppose  even  Trevor  experimented  this  with  snails.

 Raghu,

Anthelmintics  are  drugs  that  expel  internal  parasitic  worms   from  the  body.

For  Glutraldehyde  to  act  on  them  it  has  to  come  in  contact  with  these  worms  which  are  inside  the  fishes.  It  can  happen  only  if  we  feed  Glutraldehyde  to  the  fishes.  Tapeworms  are  internal  parasites.

If  I  remember  correctly  Trevor  experimented  by  pouring  concentrated  Glutraldehyde  on  leeches  and  flatworms  after  he  caught  them.

The  low  concentration  of  Glutraldehyde  we  use  in  the  aquarium  will  not  do  any  thing  to  the  snails  or  the  external  worms.  And  if  we  increase  the  dosage  till  it  effects  the  snails, worms  etc  it  will  also  effect  the  fishes  adversely.  This  is  my  experience.

 Regards,
 Nayak.

Raghu  I  have  read  through  those  threads.

There  is  not  a  single  shred  of  evidence  that  Glutraldehye  is  an  anti-helminthic.

If  you  are  going  to  go  by  a  couple  of  anecdotal  posts  and  conclude  that  Glutraldehyde  will  get  rid  of  tapeworms.  and  gill  flukes,  I  will  not  go  with  that.  I  have  dosed  Glutraldehyde  in  my  tanks  with  shrimps  and  nothing  happened  to  the  shrimps.

What  Trevor  did  was  remove  the  leaches  on  to  a  saucer  and  nuke  them  with  1  drop  of  25%  Glutraldehyde.  In  a  tank  that  would  mean  filling  it  with  25%  Glutraldehyde?

I  am  not  going  to  believe  that  a  few  ml  in  a  100  liters  tank  is  going  to  do  the  same  without  affecting  the  other  fish,  plants  and  other  creatures  there,  irreversibily  perhaps.  In  the  same  threads  someone  mentions  it  has  no  effect  on  snails  in  the  tank.

You  are  entitled  to  form  your  own  conclusions  from  whatever  uncontrolled  experiments  you  carry  out,   that  is  your  prerogative.

 There  we  go,

One  says  Yes,  the  other  says  No.

 I  too  agree  with  Nayak.

It  is  wise  not  to  form  conclusions  from  uncontrolled  experiments  from  one  single  source,  and  it  is  always  better  to  err  on  the  safer  side  and  not  use  Glutraldehyde  as  a  cure  all  for  everything.
