My  flowerhorn(6")  is  continuosly  moving  around  top  of  tank  and  brathing  along  surface.  This  is  going  on  for  almost  four  days  now.  He  is  not  showing  interest  in  eating  He  does  not  go  down  unless  someone  walks  near  tank  but  even  below  his  mouth  is  contnuously  braething.  Assuming  its  less  oxygen  in  water,  I  did  25  %  water  change  twice  in  last  4  days.  That  makes  him  littlle  better  for  say  half  an  hour  and  then  again  same  thing  started.  Please  provide  suggestions/help.
His  pcture  is  at  http://www.dapfit463.blogspot.com  though  quality  of  photo  is  very  poor  being  taken  from  mobile  phone  camera

his  symptoms  suggest  that  the  oxygen  level  in  the  water  is  very  low...as  u  said  that  after  the  water  change  he  felt  relieved...or  may  he  could  be  having  some  disease  that  could  be  making  it  tough  for  him  to  breathe

He  must  be  running  out  of  oxygen.  Add  an  airpump  with  a  good  diffuser  as  soon  as  possible.

As  Raghu  said,  the  tank  may  not  be  big  enough  for  him.  So  this  may  be  another  reason  for  stress  and  discomfort.

Try  to  make  a  large  water  change,  arround  50  to  60%.  It  will  give  him  a  bit  comfort,  but  air  supply  must.

Tank  size  is  12"  X  7  "  X  12"  height.  I  know  its  very  small  and  will  be  moving  him  to  bigger  tank  in  a  month  or  two.  Tank  has  one  power  pump  come  air  pump.
He  was  ok  till  last  week.

 Buddy,
Its  a  lot  smaller  tank  than  i  could  even  think  off  for  your  fish,  Move  him  immediately  atleast  to  a  3-4  footer.....  in  width,  1.5foot  in  height  and  breadth

6"  FH  in  1  feet  tank  Â Wall Bang  Â Are  you  kidding  Â Surprised  Â .........  shift  him  immidiately  to  a  bigger  tank.  And  stop  that  powerhed.  In  such  a  small  tank  that  power  head  is  creating  extra  stress  to  your  fish.  Put  a  normal  Diffuser  connected  to  a  Airpump.

I  think  I  will  return  it  back  to  shop.  Initially  I  was  thinking  for  bigger  tank  but  at  most  I  can  go  for  18"  X  15"  X  15"  due  to  space  constraint  in  my  living  room.  But  that  too  will  be  small  for  it  soon.  I  was  actually  sort  of  started  loving  it  and  was  not  wanted  to  part.  But  I  think  doing  it  now  will  be  better  than  later.  Thanks  everyone  for  u  r  advice

Either  you  shift  him  in  a  bigger  tank  of  atleast  36x18x18  inch  size  or  give  away  your  fish  &  get  few  guppies  or  have  a  betta  on  your  existing  tank.

 Some  questions
 1)  Will  tank  of  36x18x18  inch  size  be  suffice  for  it  for  life?
 2)  Can  I  keep  a  pair(male  and  femal)  in  it?
 3)  How  difficult  will  it  be  to  manage  this  tank.  I  already  need  an  hour  or  so  every  2/3  days  to  change  water  partially  and  once  in  two  weeks  more  time  when  I  do  major  water  change.  With  this  bigger  tank,  how  much  %  water  change  at  how  many  day  interval  will  be  needed?

BTW  my  flowerhorn  seems  very  fine  and  active  now.  His  apetite  is  also  back  to  normal.  I  put  on  the  old  air  pump  back  in  the  tank(I  had  removed  it  since  filter  was  acting  as  dual  -  filter  and  pump  as  well.  but  seems  was  not  able  to  put  that  much  oxygen  back  in  water)

Its  a  minimum  tank  size  requires  to  keep  a  Flower  Horn  healthy  &  happy,  but  bigger  is  better.  Thumb Up

Its  really  not  difficult  to  manage  a  FH  tank.  If  you  can  spend  15-20  minutes  daily  from  your  busy  schedule  then  its  really  very  very  easy  to  maintain.

 Feed  2-3  times  per  day.
Change  20%  water  daily  for  better  helth  &  growth.

 &  have  fun........  Thumb Up

 1.  For  the  tank  size  I  would  suggest  36Lx24Wx18H

 2.  As  far  as  I  know,  you  should  not  keep  male  and  female  together  if  it  is  not  a  mating  time.

 3.  I  think  you  will  be  keeping  the  FH  in  a  bare  bottom  tank.  So  the  maintenance  will  be  nothing  for  that.  You  need  to  change  50%  water  once  in  a  week  and  while  doing  the  water  change,  suck  out  all  the  poops  and  left  out  foods  from  bottom  using  a  Python.

May  be  as  of  now  the  fish  returned  in  a  normal  state.  But  the  time  bomb  will  be  ticking  always  in  background  if  you  keep  him  in  the  small  tank.  If  you  love  the  fish,  then  it  wont  be  a  problem  to  spare  30  min  weekly  for  maintenance.

 Happy  fish  keeping.

First  i  apologies  as  what  I  am  posting  may  not  be  directly  related  to  the  subject  but  just  want  to  know  your  opinions.
I  have  zeroed  down  on  a  corner  in  our  living  room.  Its  36"  X  15  ".  So  tank  will  be  around  an  inch  or  so  smaller  in  width  and  length  as  well.  Height  I   am  going  to  keep  15".  Hope  that  is  OK  if  not  best  size.   Can  I  put  some  gravels  and  rocks  to  decorate  the  tank  as  my  wife  complains  that  tank  really  does  not  look  good  as  we  see  in  hotels  or  so.  What  decoration  can  I  do  that  will  be  acceptable  to  my  FH.  She  is  concerned  because  tank  will  be  in  living  room.
Also  currently  am  not  in  position  to  spend  money  on  nice  table  to  put  tank  on  it.  Any  idea  of  how  it  can  be  done  in  low  cost  at  the  same  time  will  look  desent?
My  local  shop  is  offering  tank  for  Rs.700  and  a  stand  of  wrought  iron  angles(1"X1"  -  5mm  thick)  for  Rs.  900.  Acrylic  cover  for  tank  for  750.  But  stand  in  living  room  is  not  really  pleasing  site  I  think.

 Another  member  Anandaqu(IAH)  is  selling  his  tank.  Its  size  is  27  L  X  15  W  X  24  H.  Will  that  be  better  than  36  X  15  X  15  considering  its  for  FH?
