a  cousin  of  mine  wants  suggestions  on  native  indian  fish  for  his  pond.  the  pond  in  is  Madurai  -  thats  as  hot/cool  as  madras.  the  pond  is  atleast  9-10  feet  in  length  and  breadth  but  only  30  inches  deep

have  suggested  Jerdons  carplet  and  Arulius...  what  else?

he  doesnt  want  Channa(predatory)  or  catfish(I  cant  see  them)

he  prefers  fish  that  grow  between  5  to  12  inches...

Pradeep  unless  almost  all  of  that  pond  is  shaded  for  most  of  the  day,  he'll  have  soup  there.
 30  inches  is  shallow  IMO.

 Have  you  seen  the  pond?

I  have  seen  the  pond  and  your  point  is  correct  and  have  told  him  the  same...

30  inches  may  not  be  shallow  for  fish  that  grow  to  5  inches  -  what  say?

I  think  what  Madan  means  is  that  given  the  heat  in  Chennai  esp  in  full  sun,  a  30  inch  deep  pond  is  going  to  grow  really  hot.

P.denisonii,  P.filamentosa,  P.jerdoni,  Garra  mullya,  E.suratensis,  E.maculatus,  P.fasciatus,  P.dubius  and  many  more  as  a  lot  of  native  barbs  grow  to  around  6",  provided  the  total  surface  is  almost  covered  by  floating  plants.

Most  of  our  Indian  ponds  are  built  well  but  screw  up  with  regard  to  the  depth.  The  common  30  inches  depth  for  open  ponds  is  the  normal  mistake.  What  we  need  to  do  is  give  a  crash  course  in  pond  culture  do/don't  s  to  our  designers  and  architects.
 Setting  up  a  new  pond.
Here  is  a  expert  on  the  job.  Guess  who?
