 Hello,

My  marine  setup  is  two  months  old  and  I  do  water  cleanup  of  15-20%  every  month.  My  tank  is  in  a  place  where  no  sunlight  falls.

I  recently  noticed  my  live  rocks  are  getting  greenish  in  color  and  i  see  traces  of  green  algea.

I  want  to  know  what  would  be  the  reasons  for  the  same  and  how  to  control  it?

 Any  suggestions?

 Thanks
 Kumaran

Green  algae  is  a  sign  that  the  nitrates  in  your  tank  are  high.
Water  change  or  get  hermit  crab  (  indian  ones  are  not  reef  safe)  ,  but  tangs  are  the  best..

 cheers  !

is  partial  change  enough  or  do  i  need  to  change  completely?

Is  lighting  a  problem  I  keep  two  of  my  lights  always  switched  on  it  goes  down  only  for  6  hours  in  the  night  and  is  on  for  the  rest  of  the  period.

Does  this  can  be  a  problem?

Dont  do  a  complete  water  change  only  about  10%  though  i  would  recommend  the  follwoing  steps  :

 1.  REduce  feeding  to  fishes
 2.  Put  a  Bristle  tooth  tang  or  any  cheap  tang  it  will  take  care  of  green  algae.
 3.  put  hermit  crabs  (  indian  are  not  reef  safe  though)
 4.  Put  off  the  lights  for  2-3  day  and  keep  in  complete  dark.

Water  change  is  the  last  resort  always  for  green  algae.

 Kumaran,
I  would  like  to  know  when  did  you  set  up  the  tank  and  when  did  you  acquire  the  LR  to  be  put  in  the  tank  (did  you  use  cured  LR?  or  did  you  cure  the  LR  in  your  tank?)
We  should  understand  one  thing  here  that  a  marine  set-up  with  LR  passes  through  five  important  stages  which  we  frame  as  the  break  in  period  of  the  tank  (in  simple  terms  -  cycling  the  tank)  one  of  the  stage  is  where  the  blue-green  algae  will  increase  and  slowly  die  off  as  the  tank  matures  further  -  now  this  is  true  only  for  a  recently  set  up  tank  and  not  for  any  established  tank  so  if  it  is  set  up  a-fresh  dont  worry  just  keep  good  water  circulation  in  the  tank  and  if  possible  increase  the  menchnical  filtration  so  that  the  suspended  algae  cells  dont  keep  colonising  other  surfaces  but  get  trapped  into  the  media.
Now,  you  should  also  understand  that  what  you  read  above  is  affected  by  other  factors  also  as  I  said  the  prime  factor  is  the  time  when  the  tank  was  set-up  -  the  second  important  factor  is  good  water  circulation  and  correct  lighting  (you  have  also  not  mentioned  what  lights  you  use  and  with  what  intensity).  another  factor  that  affects  this  break  in  period  is  the  source  water  that  is  used  for  making  the  sea-water  if  it  is  high  in  silicates  the  diatom  phase  will  also  be  a  prolonged  one  and  thus  increases  the  duration  of  the  break  in  period.  (sometimes  the  tank  might  take  even  12-15  weeks  to  complete  the  break  in  period)
Madan  had  a  thread  which  is  made  a  sticky  in  the  water  chemistry  section  (it  is  a  very  good  article  by  eric  borneman)
 you  could  read  it
 here
more  on  this  when  you  provide  us  with  further  info  about  your  set  up

My  tank  setup  details  are  posted  in  this  earlier  post.
 http://indianaquariumhobbyist.com/community/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=6089

I  had  cured  my  liverocks  outside  the  tank  for  3  weeks  with  a  powerhead  and  regular  water  change.

TubeLight  specifications  -  Two  Whitelight  14000K  each  and  Pink  4000K  and  blue  6000K

 Thanks

 Hi  Kumaran,
I  have  answered  your  queries  in  the  other  thread  -  sorry  for  the  late  answer.
 well,  just  for  your  information:
4000*K  is  indeed  a  pink  light  (rather  orangish)  so  try  to  refrain  from  using  it  for  a  reef  tank  instead  you  could  accomodate  another  coral  blue  lamp  or  something  in  the  range  of  14000*  to  20000*K  even  an  actinic  will  do.
6000*K  is  white  light  and  14000*K  is  blue  light.
If  the  canopy  is  airtight  try  to  open  it  up  and  till  you  open  it  up  keep  monitoring  your  pH.
I  guess  the  use  of  sea-water  collected  near  the  beach  is  responsible  for  the  tank  taking  just  a  little  longer  to  cycle  -  so  don't  panic  the  algae  will  slowly  vanish.
 HTH!
