Have  seen  these  fishes  in  LFS.  Shoppers  in  Mumbai  commnaly  call  them  chicklate.  I  wanted  to  find  information  on  web  for  them  but  this  word  is  not  giving  any  result.  Can  anyone  from  Mumbai  tell  what  is  proper  name  for  these.
They  come  in  different  colous  snow  white,  yellow,  blue.  LFS  informed  me  they  are  aggresive  fishes  and  can  not  be  kept  with  other  fishes.  I  think  they  grow  around  5-6  inches.

Commonly  refer  to  African  cichlids  Sad

The  variants  are  "morphs"  of  the  PseudoTropheus  Sp.  ,  hence  the  names  "blue  morph",  "white  morph",  "yellow  morph",  etc.

chiklet,  chichlet,  sichled,  chislet,  all  are  local  wrongly  pronounced  names  for  cichlids.

No  matter  what  is  the  actual  pronounciations-  If  you  want  the  Cichlids(Sick-lids)  you  have  to  pronounced  chiklid-  chiklets-  or  any  variations  so  that  LFS  people  can  understand.  Chuckle

I  think  cichlids  is  a  group  of  different  type  of  fishes  like  flowerhorn,  oscar,  discus  etc...but  these  people  call  only  a  particular  fish  as  chicklate.

I  have  seen  that  many  cichlids  which  LFSes  fail  to  recognise  are  sold  as  Chiklets.  Some  years  back,  even  Blue  Morph  and  Auratus  were  sold  just  as  'Chiklets'.  At  that  time,  some  LFS  sold  them  as  'blue  chiklet'  and  'yellow  chiklet'  Very Happy

ShivRam  is  common  in  Hyderabad!  They  were  referring  to  severums,  by  the  way!

 Cichlids  are  called  Chi-chi-lids  !

Beunos  Aires  Tetras  are  called  Bonus  Eye  Tetra  in  my  town.!

The  LFS  around  here,  used  to  think  that  the  fishes  that  they  have  is  whats  available  worldwide!  Slowly  they  have  graduated  to  understand  that  there  are  other  fishes  too.

Most,  in  fact  ALL  the  LFS  I  have  seen  are  owned  and  operated  by  businessmen,  who  are  non  fish  lovers.  They  treat  fishes  and  aquatic  life,  the  way  a  brick  merchant  treats  his  bricks.  Thats  why  the  situation!

Guys,  if  you  go  around  looking  for  Sick-lids,  or  for  that  matter  any  fish,  pronouncing  it  the  right  way,  you  ill  definitely  be  turned  out!   ROFL

My  LFS  guy  [happens  to  be  the  biggest  in  town]  got  to  know  that  the  secret  of  discus  keeping  was  beefheart  from  somewhere.  He  beats  me  at  the  rat  race  to  the  beef  shop,  and  my  beef  man  apologizes  everytime,  saying  the  LFS  guy  pays  more,  and  picks  up  all  the  heart  thats  there.  I  have  now  changed  to  a  different  beef  shop!  I  went  to  this  LFS  guys  stocking  place  the  other  day,  a  bit  earlier  in  the  day.  I  was  surprised  to  see  one  boy,  busy  feeding  their  fishes  with  beefheart.  They  have  about  200  tanks,  with  at  least  50  to  100  fishes  in  each  tank!  This  guy  had  a  small  bucket  with  about  4  or  5  hearts.  He  was  going  to  each  tank,  and  with  the  heart  above  the  tank,  chopping  off  huge  chunks,  with  his  newly  acquired  knife[which  seemed  to  give  him  the  power,  man  he  was  feeling  like  HE-MAN,  and  it  was  showing  on  his  face!]  and  dropping  quite  a  bit  of  meat  into  each  tank.  He  told  me  that  was  their  secret,  if  you  wanted  to  keep  your  fish  healthy.  He  was  feeding  his  goldfish,  sharks,  angels,  tetras,  mollies,  platies,  carps,  barbs,  dollars,  swords,  scats,  flowerhorns,  baby  aros  with  egg  sacs,  all  with  these,  and  they  were  doing  very  well  because  of  this.

And  also  the  most  illiterate  ones  dont  agree  with  the  fact  that  oscars,  FHs,  parrots  (and  some  more  american  cichlids)  come  under  cichlid  category.  And  the  reputed  dealers  say  that  all  the  cichlids  come  from  river  Amazon,  America.
Some  days  back  a  LFS  guy  had  a  pair  of  short  bodied  FH  that  were  very  dull  colored,  I  asked  him  whether  they  were  jellybean  convicts,  he  got  really  angry  and  told  me  that  they  were  AUSTRALIAN  short  bodied  FH   ROFL

You  are  right,  no  one  will  ever  agree  that  you  have  to  pronounce  it  as  'sick-lid'

To  add  more,  i  have  heard  chiklis,  chick-laid,  chich-lid,  sick-let,  binos  tetra  (beunos  aires)  rama-rosy,  shiva-ram  as  said  before,  ulta-latku  macchhi  (upside  down  catfish),  rosybar,

But  can  anyone  beat  'DISCO'!!  (the  person  was  referring  to  discus!,  someone  said  to  him  that  they  dance  in  the  tank,  thats  why  called  disco  fish!!  Smile  )
