 Hi,

Do  you  guys  know  of  any  native  fish  species  from  Ooty?...

Also  during  one  of  my  recent  trips  I  spotted  a  loach(?)..More  resembling  a  kuhli  in  shape..Which  was  found  in  a  fast  flowing  stream  in  Masanagudi,  near  The  Mudumalai  reserves

The  Fish  was  very  fast  and  occassionally  dart  to  the  surface...Could  not  get  any  pics  as  much  as  I  could  try..

 regards

 Rahul,

Yes  I  did  spot  a  few  small  fishes  mostly  barbs  ...But  this  one  was  just  too  quick  for  me  and  resembled  a  kuhli  loach  ...One  of  the  reason  why  I  was  asking  was  the  water  was  near  freezing  :-)

What  sp  of  loaches  are  found  there?  Maybe  this  might  get  me  a  closer  match  ???

Also  ....Any  one  gone  fishing  in  Ooty?  Kunda/Pykara/Glenmorgan?...Heard  there  are  a  few  places  for  game  fishing...

 regards

You  could  be  referring  to  Nemacheilus  Nilgiriensis.  Most  of  our  loaches  are  closely  related.

Yes,  could  be  a  Schistura,  Mesonemacheilus,  Lepidocephalichthys...  hard  to  tell  without  pics.

Hope  to  spot  some  this  month  end.  Certainly,  no  serious  fishing  would  be  possible  with  my  kids  around.

Any  good  location  in  proper  Ooty  with  slow  moving  streams?  This  would  be  my  first  ever  trip  there.

 TIA.

 Hi  Shankar
Ask  someone  when  you  reach  Ooty  to  direct  you  to  Parsons  Valley  and  Governor's  Sholla,  These  are  areas  that  tourist  do  not   know  about  and  you  will  need  a  SUV  to  get  there  as  the  road  could  be  pretty  bad.
The  good  parts  about  getting  there  will  be  breathtaking  scenery,  a  few  shallow  streams  and  quite  a  few  fish,  wild  life.
Advice  if  you  could  get  a  guide  who  knows  that  area  well.  It  is  a  about  an  hours  drive  from  Ooty.

 Have  a  good  time

The  Roads  esp  to  Pykara  is  horrible  and  def  needs  to  be  avoided  atleast  for  the  next  month(WIP)...But  it  does  have  a  few  spots  where  you  have  slow  moving  waters...Venture  only  if  you  have  a  SUV..This  includes  Seventh  mile,  Golf  course  etc...

Ooty  is  best  enjoyed  away  from  the  regular  tourist  locations...and  I  do  second  Mayur's  view  on  that

Try  Masanagudi  which  is  Inbetween  Mudumalai  and  Bandipur...Lots  of  private  cottages  have  sprung  up  in  the  recent  years...But  it  still  is  a  good  place  if  you  want  to  spot  wildlife...But  check  and  book  in  advance  with  the  Forest  dept  at  Ooty..  and  you  could  stay  at  the  log  house  which  is  quite  nice

 Regards.

 Thanks  you  Mayur  and  Vyas.

Dont  think  i  would  have  time  to  venture  'out  of'  Ooty,  as  my  stay  is  short.  Certainly  more  time  to  be  spent  at  Comibatore.
