Hi  guys.  Where  can  I  get  more  information  on  these?  I  got  them  on  a  whim,  but  I  have  no  clue  on  how  to  take  care  of  these  fish.  Are  these  lobsters,   and  if  so  what  kind  are  they?  Thanks!

Thanks,  but  that;s  not  of  much  elp  to  me.  What  is  its  common  name  and  how  does  one  take  care  of  these  creatures?  It  was  very  irresponsible  of  me  to  take  something  from  the  LFS  without  any  knowledge  about  the  fish.  So  please  help!

I  tried  to  google  this  scientific  name  mentioned  above,  but  all  I  can  get  are  scientific  journals  which  mention  about  the  culture  of  this  species.  That's  not  what  I  am  looking  for.

No  big  deal  in  keeping  these  Macrobrachium  rosenbergii.  You  can  give  them  whatever  common  name  you  please.  Smile
These  species  of  freshwater  shrimp  are  cultured  in  some  of  our  southern  inland  shrimp  farms.
A  common  name  is  Malaysian  prawn.
Keep  them  in  a  species  tank.
You  can  feed  them  everything  you  feed  your  fish.
A  half  inch  layer  of  fine  sand  would  be  ideal.
A  couple  of  rocks  and  a  piece  of  driftwood  can  complete  your  tank.
A  full  spectrum  light  for  at  least  an  hour  every  day.

Thanks  Trevor!  Also,  should  I  fill  the  water  in  the  tank  upto  the  brim  or  keep  it  low?  I  was  reading  somewhere  that  they  are  ok  in  4-5  inches  of  water,  which  sounds  very  low  to  me!  I  have  them  in  a  2*1*1  tank  right  now.  When  you  say  that  it  needs  a  full  spectrum  of  light  -  does  that  mean  normal  sunlight?  I  have  the  tank  near  a  window  and  it  gets  1-2  hours  of  sunlight  daily.

Start  off  with  a  low  water  level.
These  guys  do  not  climb  out  of  the  tank  like  the  red  lobster  and  the  Australian  yabbie.
But  they  could  find  themselves  on  dry  ground  when  there  is  the  initial  fight  for  territory  if  the  tank  water  is  full.
Give  them  time  to  set  in.
Gradually  in  time  you  could  increase  the  water  to  your  comfort  level.
Some  regular  sunlight  or  artificial  light  is  essential  for  the  moulting  process  by  which  they  grow.

Wll,  I  happened  to  read  your  post  this  morning.  Unfortunately,  one  of  them  climbed  out  of  the  tank  and  fell  to  its  death  last  night.  I  am  going  to  reduce  the  water  level,  try  and  get   another  one  of  them  and  place  a  tank  hood.
Also,  what  do  I  feed  them?  I  got  saddled  with  a  whole  lot  of  large  red  colored  pellets.  I  dropped  a  few  of  them  yesterday,  but  the  pellets  dont  sink  and  the  prawns  didn't  touch  them.  Any  suggestions?  Thanks.

They're  scavengers/opportunistic  hunters,  feed  them  dried  or  fresh  fish  or  feeder  guppies.

Well,  I  got  another  one  today  to  replace  the  poor  guy  that  climed  out  to  its  death  last  night.  Also  got  a  hood  to  prevent  such  mishaps  in  the  future!  I  am  feeding  them  discus  hikari  pellets  for  now  and  it's  great  fun  to  watch  them  eat.  They  are  a  nice  change  from  regular  fish!
