 Hello  Fellow  Hobbyists

With  the  inflow  of  all  these  new  imported, expensive  products  in  the  market.  It  has  been  on  the  back  of  all  our  minds  as  to  "How  to  setup  an  economical  Hi  tech  planted  tank?".

A  lot  of  our  friends  have  been  asking  me  the  same  question,  so  with  the  help  of  Mayur  and  Adip
I  am  giving  you  all  a  few  pointers.

This  is  a  tank  setup  to  show  all  fellow  hobbiest  how  to  economically  kick  start  an  ADA  tank.

This  tank  has  been  set  up  at  Mayur's  place.

The  tank  is  an  old  all  glass  tank  of  36"  x  20"  x  20  "  size.
The  Rocks  and  the  center  piece  have  been  collected  on  fish  trips  to  Cavery  river.

Do  join  us  in  a  step  by  step  indication  of  the  set  up.

 1.  Cleaning  an  old  tank.

Wash  throughly  remove  all  previous  stains.  White  stains  can  be  removed  with  dilute  HCL,  Vinegar,  Robin  liquid  bleach.  Rinse  well  making  sure  that  all  chemical  residue  is  completely  removed.
 Wipe  dry.

 2.  Planning  the  Tank  Layout

Before  you  start  you  need  to  know  what  you  want  to  do  with  the  tank, with  respect  to  the  layout,  placement  of  wood,  rocks,  substrate  etc.
You  could  draw  it  out  on  a  sheet  of  paper  so  that  you  have  a  clear  picture  of  what  goes  where.
Keep  all  the  things  you  need  at  hand  so  you  are  not  running  around  later.
Filter  and  CO2  connections  and  placement  also  needs  to  be  considered  at  this  point.

 3.  Adding  the  Substrate

A  Two  inch  layer  of  calcium  free  substrate  (2-3mm  Gravel  washed  clean)  has  been  used  in  the  bottom  mixed  with  latrite  and  a  three  liter  bag  of  ADA  power  Sand.
The  substrate  needs  to  be  layered  higher  towards  the  back  of  the  tank  and  lower  to  the  front.
Decorative  soils  can  also  be  used  at  this  point.

 4.Setting

Placement  of  the  wood  and  rocks  in  the  tank  is  crucial.  A  few  points  need  to  be  taken  into  consideration.
 a.  The  wood  and  rocks  need  to  be  stable  and  balanced.
 b.  Placement  should  allow  free  flow  of  water  avoiding  dead  spots.
 c.  The  wood  selected  should  not  hamper  the  flow  of  light.

 Without  light  with  flash.

 Will  be  Updated.

@  Trevor  Sir:  Thanks  a  lot  to  start  this  topic.  It  will  be  helpfull  for  all  of  us  who  all  are  dreaming  about  a  ADA  tank  for  a  long  time.

Just  an  small  idea.  Is  it  possible  to  remove  the  background  Poster  of  the  tank.  It  will  kill  the  beauty  of  the  tank  in  near  future.

Personally  I  do  not  care  much  for  artificial  backgrounds.  Will  try  to  convince  Mayur  to  remove  it.  That  is  unless  he  is  camouflaging  some  deep  scratches  of  the  glass  with  it.  Smile

You  must  be  joking.  That  wood  is  free  and  so  are  the  rocks,  the  gravel  and  laterite.  Coming  back  to  the  wood  that  just  a  piece  of  root  found  lying  on  the  banks  of  our  river  Cauvery.

For  those  who  wish  to  avoid  even  this  little  ADA  soil  substrate  expenditure  can  go  through  this.

 Hi  Trevor,

Set  up  looks  very  natural!  Guess  you  would  be  changing  the  background  in  near  future.

Not  at  all.  Go  for  construction  sand  of  size  2-3  mm.  Use  laterite  as  bottom  layer.  If  you  can  scape  the  tank  properly,  there  is  nothing  wrong  with  the  looks  of  sand.

You  cannot  use  construction  sand  cause  its  too  fine  for  plants  in  a  planted  tank.
But  near  construction  sites  you  get  small  heaps  of  waste  sand  thrown  aside  after  sieving.
These  are  the  larger  grains  which  are  unfit  for  plastering.
You  could  use  this  selecting  grains  of  between  two  to  to  three  mm  size  after  chucking  out  the  larger  ones.
This  sand  is  inert  and  by  itself  will  serve  no  purpose  other  than  as  a  filler  if  not  used  with  any  other  material  like  laterite.

ADA  soil  is  clay  based  (iron  rich)  which  helps  in  water  purification  with  high  CEC  (Caption  exchange  Capacity)  and  has  a  very  highly  porous  surface  with  benefits  bacteria  colonization.
It  lowers  and  stabilizes  the  PH  which  helps  in  amazing  plant  growth  and  I  have  seen  that  plant  roots  are  attracted  and  just  stick  to  the  porous  ADA  soil.
It  is  a  class  apart  and  if  you  can  afford  it  just  go  for  it.

I  agree  ADA  soil  is  good;  but  it's  still  way  too  expensive.  (overpriced  even..)  even  if  i  had  loads  of  money  i  wouldn't  buy  what  is  overpriced.

Except  the  CEC  thing,  everything  else  can  be  attained  by  alternative  means  easily  and  very  economically.

 |read  further,  keeping  in  mind  how  much  it  costs|

Proper  fertilization  can  match  supplement  iron.  if  you  are  dead  set  on  root  fertilization  use  some  root  tabs  etc.;  bacteria  colonization  -  put  some  extra  bio-balls  in  your  filtration  loop;  as  far  as  rooting  goes  i  believe  plants  root  just  as  good  in  plain  sand  as  long  as  the  grain  size  is  right..

What  bugs  me  the  most  that  it's  properties  are  temporary  and  reduce  with  time  and  that  too  rather  quick,  I've  read,-  a  year  tops.  And  the  granules  also  breakdown  with  time  especially  if  you  mess  with  it  too  much,  this  was  a  big  downer  for  me.
