 Hi  Trevor,

Thank  you  for  a  very  precise  write  up  on  the  planting  which  covers  the  tank  from  front  to  back.  I  had  few  hobbyist  visit  me  yesterday  and  I  didn’t  know  how  to  tell  them  on  starting  a  planted  tank.  Now  I’m  sure  that  they  would  be  more  than  content  to  see  this  thread  and  to  help  themselves  in  creating  a  master  piece.

Tips  shared  by  you  and  other  members  will  surely  make  a  big  difference  in  the  world  of  planted  tanks.

Thanks  to  all  you  members  who  have  made  this  thread  a  knowledge  bank  for  years  to  come.

 Regards,
 Surya

Here  are   a  couple  of  pictures  of  the  partially  planted  tank.
 The  water  is  still  murky.

 Plants  and  Light.

Choosing  the  right  kind  of  light  for  your  planted  tank  is  crucial.

Different  species  of  plant  need  different  intensity  of  light.  So  you  need  to  keep  in  mind  what  plants  you  have  used  in  your  tank  and  choose  the  light  accordingly.

A  basic  guideline  that  you  could  follow:
Low  light  Plants  -  1-2  watts  per  gallon
Medium  light  Plants  â€“  2-3watts  per  gallon
Highlight  Plants-  3-4  watts  per  gallon

This  also  goes  to  show  that  you  need  to  understand  the  basic  needs  of  each  of  the  plant  species  that  you  use  in  your  tank.

There  is  wide  verity  of  light  options  available  with  a  wide  range  of  price  as  well;  actually  the  Indian  Hobbyist  is  spoilt  for  choices.

The  options  available  range  from  an  18watt  CFL  or  even  an  incandescent  bulb  to  a  150watt  ADA  metal  halide.

For  the  tank  in  question  we  have  used  the  ADA  108-0361  NAG-150W  Green
Metal  halide  lamp  which  needs  to  be  replaced  every  4,000-5,000  hour  use  (1  year  to  1  1/2  year  use  with  eight  lighting  hour  per  day.  Also  the  ADA  lights  do  not  work  with  the  watts  per  gallon  formula  but  on  the  surface  area  formula.

Several  IAH  Planters  like  Madan,  Harshal,  Suhail  Saab,  Shankar.S  and  others  have  had  fantastic  results  using  T5  HO.
Since  we  barely  had  any  practical  information  of  the  ADA  metal  halide  lighting  in  our  country,  we  went  ahead  and  used  it.

There  are  various  options  for  fixtures  and  fittings  as  well.  We  have  used  a  DIY  aluminum  fitting.

 What  we  experienced.
The  ADA  metal  halide  is  a  bright  white  light  and  it  kind  of  brings  out  all  the  possible  colors.
It  was  seen  that  different  plants  react  in  different  ways  under  this  light.
Stem  Plants:  though  there  was  a  marginal  transplantation  they  take  off  immediately  and  should  be  ready  for  a  trim  in  the  first  week  itself.
Rosette  plants:  The  old  leaves  should  pop  off  in  the  first  couple  of  days,  nothing  to  be  worried  about  though  as  new  shoots  will  also  pop  up  at  around  the  same  pace.
Anubias  and  Ferns:  Though  they  are  considered  low  light  plants  they  have  been  placed  almost  directly  under  the  light  and  new  growth  has  been  seen  in  the  first  week  itself.

 To  be  Continued.......

 Couple  of  lighting  photos

These  are   ADA  tubes  available  from  2  feet  to  4  feet  and  15-40watt.

This  picture  below  is  of  the  ADA  metal  halide.
The  fixture  is  mounted  on  a  DIY  aluminium  stand.
The  light  fixture  is  movable  along  the  top  of  the  stand  from  the  left  to  right  and  vice  versa.
The  stand  can  slide  along  the  top  of  the  glass  from  the  front  to  the  rear  and  vice  versa.
This  will  help  to  adjust  the  light  spectrum  if  required.

This  link  is  also  helpful  for  the  guys  into  DIY.

 Carbon  dioxide
Carbon  dioxide  (Co2)  is  essential  for  good  plant  growth.

We  have  all  learnt  about  Photosynthesis.
Photosynthesis  is  the  process  by  which  plants  use  the  energy  of  sunlight  and  carbon  dioxide  to  produce  oxygen.
The  conversion  of  light  energy  into  use  able  chemical  energy  happens  with  the  help  of  chlorophyll.

All  this  sounds  good  for  terrestrial  plants  as  they  can  absorb  the  Co2  from  the  air  around  but  as  there  is  very  little  use  able  Co2  in  the  water  it  needs  to  be  added  and  diffused  into  the  water.

The  process  of  adding  Co2  to  a  planted  tank  is  available  in  the  following  links.
This  link  has  details  of  the  Co2  paraphernalia  available  in  India  and  is  cost  effective.

 http://indianaquariumhobbyist.com/community/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=4666&sid=21afc524df1d90d2ba72fda351935b40

Here  are  a  few  more  pictures  of  Co2  related  equipment  and  accessories.

 Hi  Nytyn,

That  is  a  private  joke  where  some  people  came  to  Madan's  house  and  when  he  explained  about  Photosynthesis  they  asked  him  to  give  them  some  quantity.  ROFL   ROFL

The  reason  I  am  mentioning  this  is  there  are  newcomers  here  and  they  might  query  your  expertise  thinking  you  are  serious.  Smile

But  Hey,  What  about  the  tank  or  is  it  kept  secret  since  it  is  going  to  compete  in  AGA  aquascaping?  Trevor  come  on...

 Regards,
 Nayak.

 Trevor/Adip/Mayur,

Quote:
Kickstart  a  World  class  ADA  tank  at  an  economical  rate

Can  you  please  let  us  know  what  this  would  roughly  cost  to  setup?  A  rough  ballpark  figure  would  do.

 Like  say,  around  10000,  15000  or  25000.

I  mean  everything  including  the  tank,  substrate,  lighting,  filtration,  plants  and  CO2.  Just  a  ough  figure,  so  we  can  know  what  a  tank  like  this  would  cost.
