Manu  3-5  small  fish....  just  don't  bother  with  paper  work.

Pack  the  fish  individually  in  small  bags.  I  use  3  x  16  inch  bags.  Add  only  2-3  inches  of  water  to  each  bag.  Rest  air.  In  case  you  buy  the  fish  early  on  in  the  trip....  change  water  every  day.  Put  these  bags  in  a  small  hard  plastic  container  and  pack  it  in  your  suitcase.  Double  bag  them  if  you  want  to  be  extra  careful.  make  sure  you  change  water  just  before  your  flight  back.

Don't  carry  the  fish  in  your  hand  baggage  check  it  in.

The  NOC  may  assist  in  Malaysia  but  not  in  India.  here  you  need  an  import  permit  for  the  species  you  are  getting  etc.,  which  is  very  well  impossible  for  a  hobbyist.

Don't  tell  anyone  you  have  fish  with  you  !!!

Apart  from  Madans  guidelines,  one  more  Tips,  between  two  covers,Insert  a  News  Paper,  or  Carban  Paper,so  that
by  scanning,  the  Fishes  will  not  be  shown.  Very Happy

There  are  no  smugglers  of  fishes  into  our  country,  if  there  were  -  there  would  have  been  frontosas  and  RTG  arowanas  readily  available  in  LFS.  Let's  cut  it.

One  more  question  Madan,  what  about  X  ray  scan.  Don't  they  affeect  the  fishes??

Venki,  Baggage  X-Ray  scans  is  of  low  intensity  X-rays,  it  doesn't  affect  photographic  films,  so  they  don't  affect  fish.

The  way  the  baggage  scanning  works  is  like  this  I  think  -  the  x-ray  machine  can  3  dimensionally  scan  in  layers  1-2  mm  I  think,  something  like  your  CT  scan.  So  unless  your  fish  are  exactly  in  the  plane  that  the  machine  is  scanning  they  will  not  be  seen.

So  small  fish  are  never  a  problem.  It's  only  large  fish  that  may  be  a  problem,  if  you  get  an  bum  Custom  official  in  a  bad  mood.  Moreover  Customs  Officials  the  World  over  are  not  concerned  by  hobbyists  bringing  a  few  specimens  across.

 Hi

 Lancelot

This  does  not  come  under  smuggling, since  it  is  not  classified  under  Negative  List, though  classified  under
 Restricted  Items.

As  a  Hobbyist  carriying  Few  fish  is  allowed  generaly  by
Customs.  The  point  I  have  quoted  is  because  Most  of
the  Airlines  do  not  accept  Live  Fishes  as  Checked  Baggage  or  Hand  Baggage. This  is  for  your  Kind  Information  Please.

If  you  do  put  fish  in  your  checked  baggage,  make  sure  the  plane  has  a  temperature  controlled  hold,  else  you  may  end  up  with  fish  popsicles    ...it  has  happened  before.

Madan,  whats  the  problem  with  carrying  fish  on  board??  I  would  not  want  to  risk  my  fish  ending  up  on  the  wrong  plane  or  something...

Some  airlines  complain  that  the  bags  might  leak  and  drip  on  passengers  when  stored  in  the  hand  luggage  bin  on  top.  ,  and  they  tend  to  remove  the  bag  when  u  are  about  to  board  the  aircraft.  On  long  haul  flights  with  a  flimsy  handbag  it's  risky.

I  have  tarvelled  from  NY  to  Mumbai  with  my  fish  bags  wrapped  in  my  clothes  and  all  fish  safe.  The  freezing  might  occur  when  your  bags  are  left  on  the  tarmac  or  something  in  freezing  weather,  it  doesn't  happen  inflight.

On  Domestic  flights  I  hand  carry  the  fish,  the  girls  don't  mind  it  and  allow  it  without  problems.  I  still  store  them  "  under  the  seat  in  front  of  me".

Wrong  Plane....hmmm....not  after  all  the  airports  have  introduced  the  new  security  measures  post  9/11,  these  incidences  have  dropped  drastically...  yes  that  is  a  problem.

There  are  a  growing  number  of  people  who  advocate  plastic  (PET)  jars  for  shipping/transporting  fish,  no  chance  of  leaks...I'm  leaning  towards  this  as  well.

My  freezing  story  comes  from  Vinny  Kutty,  who  had  a  bunch  of  fish  freeze  on  a  flight  from  India  to  LA  last  december...he  was  pretty  emphatic  about  not  checking  his  fish  in  again.

On  a  lighter  note  Madan,  girls  don'  object  because  you    look  like  a  VIP  traveling  on  a  diplomatic  passport.  Not  all  of  us  have  that  previlage.  I  spend  almost  10  -1  5  minutes  on  the  immigration  counters  of  the  countries  i  visit.  Because  i  look  like  a  crook  on  the  passport  photo  and  everyone  takes  a  second  opinion  with  another  officer  to  confirm  if  i'm  the  same  person  shown  on  passport.

Thanks  for  your  advises.  I  have  never  ever  thought  about  bringing  fish.  I  used  to  think  fishes  in  polybags  weigh  heavy,  i  feared    possiblitites  of  death  on  arrival.  Not  many  times  did  i  think  about  venturing  out  to  look  for  fishes  -  thinking  i  was  not  ready  for  a  priced  fish  back  home. At  least  in  my  next  travel  i  will  carry  in  at  least  one  fish  -  i  will  start  with  a  beta.

I  think  i'm  mistaken.  I  know  for  sure,  Beta  from  Chennai  is  a  rare  animal  and  a  simpleton  like  me  cannot  own.  Should  i  have  written  Betta  ????

And  for  sake  of  everyone  in  this  forum  -  can  Highness  Beta  explain  why  he  was  named  Beta.  I  don't  think  there  is  an  explanation  for  this  in  forum  topic  "self  Introduction".  Beta  should  have  made  a  point  to  explain  this.
