Hi Everyone
I am Mohan and a resident of Mulund, Mumbai. It has been 6 months since I started keeping Discus in my Boyu Tank. Bare bottom. Size 100 cms x 40 cms x 40 cms. Cap 160L. I started off with Gold fishes. I bought the discus (13 nos) when they were small and now they are all growing differently. The set up in my tanks is
External filter- Dolphin C-1600. Water change - every 2nd day 20%. Food twice daily Tetrabits and Dried worms. No heater was needed even in the winter. Temp maintained 30-31C.
I have been lucky as all my discus have survived even though I was very new to keeping fish. Am I doing everything correct? Why are they growing differently? Any solutions?
In future I would be interested to have live plants in this tank. Is it a good idea?
Also the fish waste matter does not get sucked by the external filter and I have to siphon it out daily. Is it common with external filter or do I have to change to Eheim filters which many say are good. Thankyou in advance.
Regards

With discus, bare bottom tanks are the best. Now as you have a bare bottom you can realize that the filter isnt pulling up the dirt, whereas if you had substrate, you wont even know.
You dont need a huge filter for discus. All you need is a humble sponge filter, and regular water changes. You can change about 60 to 70 percent water on alternate days. If you can do daily water changes of 40 to 50 percent, that would be the best.
If we see some pics of your discus and tank, we can comment better for sure.
Eheim filters are excellent, but they too wont pich up the Edit from the bottom of the tank. |

In this tank IMO Simple sponge filter will be good , with 25 % WC daily .

Have you tried animal heart ( BH , PH , GH etc ) ? Try to feed animal heart or meat .

For Discus , I would suggest you keep your tank bare bottom . Same time try to learm more on Discus and then you can go for big planted tank .
There are many post in this forum on planted discus tank , read them you will understand some baiscs of planted Discus tanks .
Thanks

Mohan ,
You have got beautiful tank , looks like imported one , you have kept it clean . Good to see such disus tank .
As per the size of the fishes , your tank looks little crowded , need to shift some fishes in seperate tank or you can go for bigger tank .
It looks like you have got Pigeon blood , Turquoise , melons , red whites etc . Some of your discus are good , some looks like not grown well .
Thanks

somehow , i dont like the background on the tank , Marine corals with discuss in it , I would receommend a plain back ground.
Fishes look nice and tanks look clean
