 Hi  all
I  have  managed  to  grow   moss  on  a  piece  of  coconut  shell.  It  is  in  a  seperate  shallow  tank  for  now.
Now  I  want  want  to  transfer  it  my  angelfish  tank,  how  do  i  make  it  sink.  At  this  point  i  have  tied  a  piece  of  heavy  stone.
However  I  don't  want  to  use  thread  of  any  type  in  my  tanks,  I  have  lost  enough  fish  by  them  getting  tangled  in  thread  of  all  types.  sooner  or  later  the  threads  start  to  unravell.

 Sandeep,
You  may  try  using  a  rubber  band  instead  of  thread,  it  will  be  much  safer  for  the  fishes,  the  stone  can  be  wrapped  in  a  nylon  net  and  the  same  can  then  be  tied  to  a  rubber  band,  alternately  you  may  also  try  using  nylon  threads  which  you  may  get  from  a  local  shop  selling  materials  for  craft.

 Regards

The  shell  is  in  shape  of  a  hemisphere,  with  a  hollow  base.
Nylon  net  is  not  good  ,  small  fish  get  struck  in  it  and  get  hurt  pretty  bad.

I  have  used  nylon  thread,  the  problem  is  with  thin  inquisitive  loaches  &  molly  fry,  they  have  a  knack  of  getting  in  all  odd  palces  and  getting  struck.
My  substrate  is  coarse  red  river  sand,  and  I  cannot  anchor  coconut  shell  in  this.
Guess  i  will  have  to  wait  for  some  brainwave.

Some  thoughts  off  the  top  of  my  head...

 1)  Glue  a  stone  with  epoxy  glue  (or  silicone  -if  it  sticks  to  a  coconut  shell)  to  the  inside  of  the  shell.Of  course  this  will  have  to  be  done  before  the  moss  is  grown  on  it  since  it  will  not  stick  when  wet.

 2)  Use  a  piece  of  iron  attached  to  the  inside  of  the  coconut  shell  by  a  screw  drilled  into  it  and  throught  the  coconut  shell.

 3)  cut  a  hole  on  the  side  of  the  shell  and  wedge  in  a  long  thin  stone  (granite  piece??)

Never  tried  any  of  them  but  I  guess  they  should  work...  Drinking

 Regards,
 Venkat

Finally  got  it.  The  moss  was  tied  to  the  shell  with  nylon  thread.
I  have  insterted  base  of  a  old  sponge  filter  and  it  is  now  sitting  prettily  in  my  tank.
It  is  10  days  now  and  my  angels  can't  seem  to  figure  it  out.   Chuckle

A  good  idea  buddy,  by  the  way  I  have  tied  the  mosses  given  to  me  by  you  with  black  sewing  thread  on  a  bog  wood  but  I  am  not  sure  whether  it  would  spread/grow  further........

 Regards

I  think  this  thread  should  not  end  here.
I  have  java  moss  grown  on  a  coconut  shell.  no  problem  of  sinking.  no  stones  attached  to  it,  no  nylon  thread,  no  glued  rock  or  any  thing  to  force  sink  the  shell.  it  is  doing  well  in  my  tank.  The  reason:  I  used  an  old  coconut  shell  which  I  found  in  my  garden,  buried  under  mud.  It  is  a  half  shell  with  an  eye  hole  in  it.  I  tightly  inserted  the  moss  into  the  hole  and  it  stated  growing  well.
So,  if  any  one  want  to  use  coconut  shell  as  moss  medium,  use  old  ones.  nbo  problem  of  sinking
