The  International  Betta  Congress  considers  ocellatus  to  be  a  junior  synonym  of  unimaculata...the  two  forms  have  different  collection  localities  and  some  people  believe  they  are  different  species.  But,  till  conclusive  evidence  is  presented  to  the  contrary,  I'm  going  with  the  IBC  Very Happy

If  I  am  not  mistaken,  B.  ocellata  is  collected  from  Tawau,  and  B.  unimaculata  from  Kalimantan...both  species  have  a  spot  on  the  caudal  peduncle,  but  ocellata  seems  to  have  more  green  on  the  body.

How  about  posting  pics  of  your  fish  so  we  can  compare  them??

 Madan,
Looks  like  B.  ocellata  is  accepted  as  a  valid  species  in  some  circles...  Confused

I'll  look  around  and  see  if  there  is  anything  published  on  this.

OK,  spoke  with  some  of  the  aquarists  here  who  keep  wild  type  bettas  and  are  involved  with  the  International  Betta  Congress'  Species  maintainence  Program  (IBC-SMP),  and  the  general  ("official")  concensus  is  B.  unimaculata  is  the  only  valid  species.  However,  an  indepth  taxonomic  review  might  recogonise  ocellata  and  Sp.  aff.  unimaculata  as  valid  species...till  then,  if  anyone  is  seriously  contemplating  breeding  these  fish,  it  is  probably  a  good  idea  to  keep  the  different  "species"  separately.
