|
|
Dear All,
I am looking for couple of timers and I searched most of the shops in Chennai Parry corner Electrical Shop Street (Govindappa Naicken St). The minimum cost of a time is Rs. 950.00. And all of them are clock based timers. I am looking for something simple.
Am I looking at the wrong place.
Regs

Hi Dominic,
Mechanical timers are expensive. Look for electronic timers, which are less expensive. |

Electronic Timers, which are real time timers - the in built battery keeps the clock ticking even when there is power outage - are better and you can program them to switch on/off multiple times a day. These can be programmed for up to a week. After which they become cyclic. They are a real time timer for up to a week only. Once the internal rechargeable battery goes kaput these timers go kaput. You'll have to replace the battery which is a difficult process. Average life of these timers about 2 years. 2 of My timers went kaput in about 9 months. Others have had them working longer.
Mechanical timers are cyclic timers. The power goes off the timer stops. You'll have to reset the time when the power returns. They too can be programmed for multiple on/off operations. But this can be done for a day only. Average life of these timers is quiet long. I have one running for 5 years now. The problem is the constant resetting of the time. A pain sometimes. |

Ravi,
I didnt knew that timer costs Rs 550/- .
Last month I enquired at a shop in Parrys and the cost of timer was Rs 2200/-, so I dropped the whole idea of timer.
BTW where did you get the timer, can you give me any contact details.

This time costs Rs. 950.00 in Govindappa Naicken St Chennai. I checked atleast 50 shops and bought a timer (Rs. 950.00) a year back and I am using it for my lights. I wanted to get one more for my CO2.
Its really a deal if I get it for Rs.550.00. |

Could you please give some place where I can get this Mechanical Timers. One of the best investment I made in Chennai (power cut Kingdom) is my Inverter. So I may not have to reset much. What is the approximate cost? |

I thought you bought it for 750/-. I remember you telling us about that some time back. Probably i heard it wrong.
550/- is a very decent price to buy a timer which would help a lot of problems. Can we connect multiple lighting equipments with this one? Probably then i can connect both my tank lightings to this and let it handle all by itself.
Please let me know. |

Sriram these timers typically can handle up to 2000 watt loads. Check the rating when you buy these.
Only problem is that when you switch on total load nearing 75% of the rated capacity the contacts might spark and get eroded leading to early demise of the timer.
I use one timer for all my lightings 450 watts of MH and 120 watts tubes running 4 planted tanks. Absolutely no probs. But mine is made in good solid Germany and not the "Near far east". |

I am using this timer to control 2 x 150 watts MH + 1 normally off electric value. Seems to be working alright. Check the wattage of your lights & ballast & see if it's possible to connect the value to the current timer. You may not require one more timer.
If the connected load is already high, why not fix a relay to take care of the load instead of another timer ? |

The first timer was purchased for nearly Rs 2000/- about 5 years back. The last timer was purchased about a month back for Rs 550/-. I had called & verified with the chap who goes to Parry's to buy these items. The list price is Rs 950/- + Taxes. However, frequent customers get it at Rs 550. (Not sure if this is nett or taxes extra). We also use these timers in a variety of places, for controlling the name board lights, a/c (you know this ;-) ), water pumps, etc.

I heard someone (Billboard/Hoarding contractor) say it's available for 475/-. That could be wholesale price. I have not got it at that price, nor was I able to locate the wholesaler. There is a possibility that it's available at lower prices. So, all you need to do is go & "Hunt for the Timer", and write an article about it. :-)
Update: One timer purchased in May 2004 for Rs 650 + Taxes & one timer purchased in Dec 2004 for 550 + Taxes = 619.30. Just spoke to the vendor & he quoted Rs 950 + Taxes. Then called my guy, who then spoke to the vendor & got a price of Rs 750 nett. Checking elsewhere too. Will keep you posted. |
