 Hello  Everybody,

Finally  with  a  desire  of  planted  tank,  I  had  taken  the  4  footer  to  my  home  a  week  ago  from  Camy   Very Happy

I  have  been  having  water  problems.  I  even  had  a  post  on  this  earlier.  Now  I  had  half  filled  the  tank,  the  water  was  dense  and  foggy  initially.  After  6  days,  today  the  water  is  clear  and  I  could  see  the  other  side  of  the  tank   Thumbs Up   With  this  situation,  Camy  suggested  to  go  for  EHIM  filter  and  am  prepared  for  it.  However  would  like  to  know  your  suggestions/comments  on  this.  Could  you  suggest  any  additional  steps/setup  to  have  a  cleaner  environment  in  the  tank?

Additional  Info:  Tank  Size  4x2x2,  water  to  be  used  is  Chennai  metro  water.  No  gravels  and  nothing  on  the  tank  so  far  (will  be  adding  river  gravel  today  or  max  tomorrow  based  on  availability)  and  out  of  past  experience  I  do  not  even  want  to  add  plants  before  I  feel  the  confident  of  my  filtration  and  other  necessary  setup  for  the  tank.  I  use  stored  water.

 Thank  you  in  advance   Smile

 Ravi,
All  the  very  best  for  the  project.  Keep  us  updated  regularly  on  this.

And  what  substrate  are  you  planning  to  use?  I  can  see  that  you  are  going  for  river  sand.  Just  wanted  to  know  whether  you  are  using  latarite/peat  or  other  additives  to  the  substrate.

 Hi  Mitra,

Thank  you!  I  bought  latarite  ready  for  this  tank.  And  the  gravel  I  was  told  is  a  1-2  mm  thickness  river  gravel.  I  don't  think  so  its  going  to  be  river  soil  as  when  I  checked  the  LFS  guy  told  its  not  a  soil  and  he  did  not  have  stock.  May  be  today  or  tomorrow  I  get  it.  Do  you  have  any  suggestion.

And  I  keep  you  all  posted  with  updates.

If  it  is  river  sand,  ensure  that  it  is  washed  in  hot  water  to  kill  parasites  and  other  infectious  creatures.

 Okay  Sudhir,

I  read  this  process  in  a  planted  tank  setup  thread  and  thanks  for  the  reminder  on  this.  Is  that  a  planted  tank  don't  need  heavy  filtration?

filtration  depends  on  the  type  of  fishes  you  are  going  to  keep  and  their  messiness.

 Hi  Sudhir,

I've  planned  for  below  listed  fishes.  And  if  you  look  at  the  basic  problem  I  given  here  is  the  problem  I  have  with  water.  My  understanding  is  that  filtration  is  independent  of  fish  and  plants  (though  good  eaters  spoil  the  tank  much  Very Happy)
Correct  me  if  I  understood  it  in  a  wrong  way.

One  LFS  guy  near  my  home  had  a  great  result  using  peat  +  latarite  in  the  substrate.  Check  out  if  it  is  available  there.

 Hi  Mirta,

let  me  try  if  I  could.  Thanks  for  the  idea.  Will  that  spread  around  after  sometime  and  add  worst  color  to  water?  I  may  add  2.5  inches  of  subtrate.

As  far  as  i  know,  the  peat  this  LFS  guy  used  was  processed  and  hence  dint  see  any  leaching  of  color  into  the  tank.  He  used  around  1.5  inch  of  peat  ,  0.5  inch  of  laterite  and  2  inch  sand  on  top.  So  enquire  first  and  then  buy  the  peat.

And  i  have  read  some  members  using  microsol  b  in  the  substrate.  Guess  they  might  comment  on  this.

your  stock  is  normal,  none  of  the  messy  fishes  that  also  grow  huge.  Ideally  ensure  that  you  circulate  your  tank  water  4  times  the  volume  in  1  hr.
Also  filters  are  rated  with  no  filtration  media  in  them,  so  you  should  be  looking  at  filtration  about  8  times  the  tank  volume,  Best  to  go  for  a  canister  if  its  planted.

Hi  Mitra,  let  me  check  what  quality  peat  I  get  here  and  come  back  to   you.

Sudhir,  will  the  canister  do  the  job  of  circulating  too,  if  the  capacity  is  high?  I've  not  used  to  any  of  these  things,  so  may  be  you  can  see  some  silly  questions.

Ravi,  since  yours  is  a  4ft  tank,  it  may  not  be  able  to  circulate  to  all  parts  of  the  tank,  do  it  with  small  powerheads.  Get  in  touch  with  Vimal  Stan  IAH  name  :  Imperator,  I  have  seen  that  he  does  similar  thing  for  his  planted  tank.

Sure  Sudhir.  I  now  have  some  additional  inputs  with  me.  Let  me  check  with  Vimal  on  this.  Once  again,  thanks  much  Smile
