PostPosted: Tue Jul 01, 2008 1:15 pm Post subject: WTB White sand or bright yellow sand Reply with quote

 Hi  guys,

Planning  to  set  up  2  new  tanks  with  the  stuff  that  I  got  from  Aquatika.  Pls  pray  for  me  that  my  wife  does  not  throw  me  out  of  my  house.

 Planning,

one,  with  2x1.3(H)x1.8  tank  with  ADA  Amazonia  II
second,   3x  1.3(H)x1.5  with  Aqua  Clear

Now,  I  am  in  need  of  some  white  sand.  I  did  a  google  and  found  out  that  we  get  good  quality  white  sand  in  Goa  and  in  some  places  in  Andaman  and  Nicobor  Islands.  Now,  we  do  not  have  a  member  from  Andamans  but  I  think  I  may  find  some  one  from  Goa  who  will  go  out  of  the  way  to  help  me  get  the  sand.  Now,  thats  what  I  call  wishful  thinking!   Rolling Eyes

I  think  we  get  them  in  Varca  Beach,  Majorda  Beach  and  Palolem  beaches  in  Goa.

Lets  see  what  comes  out  of  this  post.

If  I  get  the  BEST  QUALITY  of  bright  yellow  sand  1mm  size,  I  am  open  to  it,  too.

 Ciao,

Fine  Sand  in  planted  tanks  ?
I  dont  think  thats  a  very  good  idea.

Instead  why  not  look  for  white  gravel  ?
The  one  in  my  tank  is  white  quartz  gravel  2-3  mm  coarse.
Having  said  all  that  ,  I  will  discourage  you  from  using  white  gravel.
Its  difficult  to  keep  it  white   in  long  run.
In  the  initial  days  of  my  tank  I  got  all  sort  of  algae  in  my  tank  the  one  that  creeped  on  the  gravel  permamanently  left  its  mark  on  the  gravel.

Rohan,  I  was  planning  for  the  foregound,  which  will  be  plant  less.  I  will  have  the  aquarium  divided  by  acrylic  or  glass,  bisecting  the  aquarium.  In  the  front,  I  planned  to  keep  the  sand  and  in  the  back,  I  was  planning  to  keep  the  ADA  and  plant  there.

Do  you  think  that  1  mm  sand  will  create  problems  if  it  is  say,  30  percent  of  the  area?

You  mean  dividing  the  tank  along  its  depth  ?
If  its  going  to  be  plant  less  I  think  it  will  be  ok  with  the  coarseness
 but,
I  think  It  will  still  be  difficult  to  keep  it  white  over  the  long  run.

yes,  I  plan  to  divide  the  tank  in  fore  ground  and  mid-back  ground.  It  is  the  only  way  to  ensure  that  the  sand  and  the  ADA  does  not  get  mixed  up.  I  will  only  plant  in  the  ADA  part.

As  I  had  said,  I  am  open  to  bright  yellow  sand  too.  Only  reservations  is  that  it  was  to  be  top  grade.  I  am  not  going  for  ADA  Bright  sand  as  I  think  we  have  much  cheaper  and  equally  good  variants  here  too.   Thumb Up

 Hi  Debarghya,

I  visited  Goa  few  months  ago  and  found  Palolim  to  have  a  real  good  white  sand  compared  to  Varca  and  Majorda.  Why  don't  you  try  with  tourist  operators  who  are  known  to  you  or  to  your  friends?  Transport  also  become  easy  this  way.

Good  luck  for  your  setup   Thumb Up

 Dev,
I  remember  seeing  polished  white  sand  at  Jasmine  some  time  back.  Just  check  out  if  he  still  got  that  with  him.

 Hey  Deb..

It  still  might  be  difficult..  even  with  the  partition,  the  muck  will  still  settle  on  the  white  sand  sooner  or  later..  due  to  siphoning,  fish  waste...  which  would  be  very  difficult  for  your  to  take  out..

What  effet  are  you  trying  to  create..  maybe  then  we  can  help  in  a  better  way...

On  the  quality  of  the  beach  sand..  incase  you  are  ready  the  pay,  the  guy  selling  you  will  need  to  do  the  acid  wash...  would  suggest  you  to  do  it  yourself  so  that  you  dont  have  much  troubles  after  the  tank  is  setup!!!

 Hope  this  helps.

Thanks,  Mitra  and  Honey..Let  me  think..AND  that  takes  some  time...

If  I  siphon  weekly  once,  then  I  think  it  will  look  ok?  Fish  stock  will  be  very  limited,  its  a  3  feet  tank  and  plan  to  keep  small  single  species  like  rummynose  or  harlequins  in  12  in  number.  I  plan  it  to  be  a  moss,  fern  and  anubias  set  up  with  some  empty  fore  ground.

Rohan,  how  is  your  tank's  white  portion  is  looking  now,  after  a  considerable  time?  Is  it  ok?

Rohan  has  a  special  idea  Â Very Happy
When  clicking  pics,he  digs  out  white  bottom  sand,so  that  its  looks  nice...

 Deb,
Untill  you  have  very  less  plant's  leaves  disintegrating[anubias  is  good],and  also  less  excreta  of  fish  Thumb Up

Even  our  own  KK,  from  AHH  used  WHITE  sand, but  turned  brown  Sad

White  beach  sand  is  used  here.  Difficult  to  maintain  though  not  impossible.
The  fine  sand  could  jam  the  power  filter  if  it  manages  to  get   in.
Most  of  the  white  gravel  is  white  rock  crushed  into  required  sizes.  They  even  make  it  rounded  and  smooth  in  various  sizes.
Good  grained  colored  man  made  rocks  come  for  landscaping  in  container  loads  from  Italy.
