 Hi
I  have  been  collecting  plants  from  the  local  LFS.  I  have  hopes  to  setup  a  tank  with  plants  in  the  near  future.  The  problem  is  that  the  local  LFS  guys  uses  cryptic  Malayalam  descriptions  for  most  plants,  I  am  at  a  loss  when  it  comes  to  identifying  them

 Hoping  for  some  help

1,  He  did  not  give  a  name  for  this  one  at  all

2,  This  was  crptically  referred  to  as  the  red  plant.  It  has  green  leaves  with  red  undersides.  I  think  that  this  is  a  Rotala?

3,  This  was  the  green  round  leafed  plant

4,  Both  were  sold  to  me  as  Green  Cabomba,,  any  help  to  differentiate  the  species  would  be  appreciated

5,  I  think  this  is  some  kind  of  hygrophilla,

I  am  not  keen  to  setup  plants  with  high  light  /  nutrient  requirements  in  my  tank  since  i  am  just  starting  off.  Thats  why  I  need  specific  plant  IDs

 Thanks

 1-Hygrophila  difformis
 2-Ludwigia  glandulosa  or  alternanthera  reinecki?
 4-cabomba  caroliniana
 5-hygrophila  corymbosa

Except  1  &  5  all  others  require  high  lights.

 Thank  You.
I  am  a  bit  confused  by  3  and  4.  Both  were  sold  to  me  as  green  Cabomba.

Unni,  the  third  plant  is  Ludwigia  Repens.  It  would  turn  beautiful  red  if  given  the  right   conditions.
 Thanks

Thank  You.  Now  that  you  say  it,  i  note  that  there  is  a  tinge  of  red  especially  on  the  undersides  of  the  leaves.  I  really  wasn't  planning  to  go  beyond  2  Watts/Gallon.  SO  I  guess  it  might  remain  green

By  the  way  your  10Gallon  is  a  beautiful  tank.  Does  it  use  CO2?

 Hi  Unninga,

In  No:4  the  lacy  ones  are  Myriophyllum  aquaticum(Parrot  feather)  and  the  other  one  is  cabomba.

 Regards,
 Nayak.

 Good  post  Nayak.
That  is  the  Myriophyllum  aquaticum.  Aka  parrot  feather/milfoil.  This  easy  to  grow  plant  needs  strong  light  and  soft  water  and  will  produce  thick  leaves  above  the  water.
There  is  also  a  red  myriophyllum.

In  Cabombas  there  is  the  Cabomba  aquatica  and  the  Cabomba  Caroliniana.  Then  there  is  the  Red  Cabomba  â€“  Cabomba  piauhyensis.
The  Ambulia  plants,  which  are  a  native  of  India  also  come  very  close  to  the  Cabomba  and  can  confuse  many.
The  Ambulia  leaves  are  arranged  in  a  whorl  right  around  along  the  stem.  Cabomba  are  fan  shaped.

 Hi  all
Thanks  for  all  the  comments  and  guidance.
This  plant  grew  out  from  the  stand  of  Myriophyllum  aquaticum  that  I  had  planted.  This  obviously  seem  to  be  different,  I  was  wondering  what  it  could  be?

Is  this  Rotala  Wallichi?  I  got  three  cuttings  from  my  LFS  yesterday.  True  to  form  the  man  insisted  that  it  is  Cabomba   Unsure   Confused

Any  help  to  identify  this  would  be  welcome.  The  leaf  patterns  look  like  R  Wallichi  pictures  seen  on  the  net.  But  the  colors  don't  match

 Unni,

It  is  Rotala  Wallichi.  This  plant  needs  very  bright  light,  clean  well-filtered  water  and  nutrients.

 Cheers

 Dear  Unni
From  where  you've  taken  those  fine  shots,  Your  aquarium  or  from  LFS?
Anyhow,  you  have  a  good  hand  in  photography  ,  I  must  say.
 Regards
 Kaushik
