 Hello  Friends,
One  of  my  5.5"  fish  started  to  lie  down  horizontally  on  the  floor.
I  had  observed  that  this  fish  was  not  very  active  and  feeding  less  than  other  fish.
I  have  transferred  it  to  a  hospital  tank.  The  tank  capacity  is  about  42  lts.
 I  used
 Metro  (  400  mg)  +  tetra  cycline  (  400  mg)  +  salt

 temp  =  31
filter  /  aeration  =  sponge  filter

After  10  hrs  of  medication  ,  the  fish  is  still  tilted  at  an  angle.  Please  find  the  attached  pics  for  details.
One  pic  is  from  the  front  and  other  from  the  side.

Please  let  me  know  your  comments  and  suggestions.

 ~Sreeni

Is  it  bloated  or  constipated?  I  can't  tell  from  the  pics...  What  medication  are  you  giving  it?

Why  did  you  start  the  above  mentioned  combination  of  the  drugs?  Did  you  observe  anything  like  fin  rot  or  white  feces?  Remember,  these  med  are  stressful  to  the  fishes  as  well.  I  think  you  should  start  with  salt  treatment  at  first.  If  bloated,  then  with  MgSO4  (epsom  salt).

 Hi  Sreeni,

Sad  to  see  the  Discus  not  keeping  well.  Check  this  info  below  as  given  by  Shiva  Sir  on  a  previous  thread:

Problem  in  Discus  :  Bloat  or  Constipation  .
Symptoms                   :  Discus  unable  to  maintain  the  balance  and  looks  uncomfortable.  Belly  bulged  out  and  looks  like  discus  has  swallowed  a  marble  most   of  the  time  darker  in  color  .
Treatment                    :  Epsom  salt  ,  three  tablespoon  for  100  ltrs  .  After  24  hrs  do  75%  WC  .If  your  discus  is  not  better  after  one  treatment  repeat  the  same  treatment  one  more  time  .  If  no  improvement  with  Epsom  ,  then  it  might  may  be  a  bacterial  infection.

Kind  suggestion:  Pls  do  not  resort  to  any  medication  immediately,  unless  otherwise  diagnosed  well.  Most  importantly,  DO  NOT  hit  the  panic  button  as  soon  as  you  see  them  unwell.  Discus  keeping  turns  out  to  be  easy  with  just  the  basics  right.

 Thanks,
 Karan

 Hello  friends,
Thanks  for  the  comments  and  suggestions.
IAH  site  was  down/  inaccessible  for  the  last  two  days.  I  checked  other  sites  and  most  of  them  mentioned  that  this  could  be  'Discus  Flu'.  It  was  suggested  to  use  PP  as  treatment  and  hope  the  fish  would  recover.
However  it  would  be  my  last  option  to  use  PP.  Hence  I  started  with  the  treatment  as  mentioned  in  my  first  mail.
The  good  thing  is  the  fish  seems  to  have  recovered  a  bit.  Its  not  tilted  any  more  and  is  moving  around  a  bit.  The  poop  is  black.  But  its  not  feeding.  This  is  the  third  day  of  medication.  I  will  stop  it  today  and  will  resume  salt  treatment  for  this  week.
Please  let  me  know  your  comments  /  suggestions.

Discus  looks  good  ,  Metro  in  water  ,  with  increased  temp  will  make  them  eat  again  .

 Dear  Sreeni,
Having  watched  this  thread  for  a  couple  of  days,I  cannot  help  but  comment  on  your  fish. The  poor  fellow  is  a  very  beautiful  specimen  undergoing  a  very  temporary  phase  of  discomfort.
How  long  are  you  having  this  discus  with  you?Sometimes  new  discuses  of  that  size  lie  down  on  its  sides  for  a  few  hours  when  released  in  a  new  environment  usually  from  fatigue  and  stress. In  that  case  there  is  nothing  to  worry  about  as  it  is  just  a  matter  of  time  before  it  recovers  on  its  own.Hunger  strikes  are  very  common  in  discus  and  can  go  on  for  a  long  time. As  a  matter  of  fact  it  is  very  difficult  to  acclimatise  a  big  and  matured  discus  in  a  new  environment.
Secondly  it  does  not  look  to  be  bloated  (at  least  from  the  above  pictures)  so  Epsom  should  not  be  an  option.
The  simultaneous  use  of  metro  and  tetracycline  is  definitely  not  recommended. In  fact,if  you  have  observed  black  excreta  what  made  you  decide  on  metro  in  the  first  place?
However  since  you  have  started  the  treatment,do  continue  with  it  and  complete  the  recommended  course  if  you  do  not  want  your  fish  to  become  resistant  to  the  applied  antibiotics. An  airstone  instead  of  the  sponge  filter  is  a  better  option.
Honestly  speaking  whenever  you  find  a  discus  in  some  discomfort  (unless  symptoms  like  white  poop, etc  are  evident)  please  do  not  bombard  the  poor  fishes  with  chemicals  you  read  about  on  the  net(yes  I  have  been  guilty  of  the  same  crime  myself).Provide  them  with  a  clean  environment(through  grand  water  changes)  and  in  my  miniscule  discus  experience,in  majority  of  the  cases  they  will  recover  by  themselves.
I  would  request  the  experts  to  correct  me  if  I  am  wrong.
Wishing  your  discus  a  speedy  recovery!

 Dear  friends,
Thanks  for  all  your  comments  and  suggestions.

What  i  have  learned  by  experience  is  -  Discus  health  detoriates  exponentially.  One  of  4"  checker  board  was  not  feeding  and  started  to  poop  white  matter.  I  went  out  and  got  a  small  hospital  tank.  By  the  time  i  came  back  the  checker  board  was  dead.  This  was  about  3  hours.
Maybe  what  i  currently  did  was  a  knee  jerk  reaction.  But  the  point  is  the  fish  is  alive.  All  of  us  agree  that  sick  Discus  is  not  a  pretty  sight!!!
 We  learn  from  experience.
Currently  the  fish  is  shaking  its  tail  and  moving  around  a  bit.  I  hope  it  would  start  feeding  soon.

Thanks  again  for  all  your  comments.  Further  comments  are  always  welcome......

 ~Sreeni

**  Swarnendu  the  fish  is  with  me  for  around  2  months  now...
**  I  have  aquarium  salt.  Do  you  thinks  its  better  than  or  equivalent  to  Epsom  salt..

Epsom  salt  is  different  from  Aquarium  salt.  Epsom   salt  is  Magnesium  sulphate.  You  can  go  ask  for  packets  of  Epsom  Salt  in  any  medical  shop

Epsom  Salt  is  not  really  needed  unless  your  discus  is  suffering  from  Bloat  problem.
IMO  your  discus  is  swimming  at  a  slanted  angle  due  to  unstable  water  parameters  or  maybe  due  to  internal  issue.  Under  such  unstable  water-chemistry,  discus  move  very  fast  in  the  tank  with  jerks  &  circular  movements.  Sometimes  they  are  used  to  bang  tank-glass  during  such  behaviour.  DO  NOT  DO  massive  water-changes  for  some  time.  Add  handful  of  Rock-Salt  to  your  tank  &  keep  the  heater  set  at  29-30  degrees.

Once  they  are  settled  with  their  stress-level,  they  may  start  eating  again.  If  not,  proceed  with  Metro  dosing.
