The  thread  to  meet  Coimbatore  based  Aquarists  germinated  the  Idea  for  a  collection  trip

A  lot  of  places  were  shortlisted,  Mayaar/Moyaar  was  finalized,  Primarily  due  to  the  fact  that  this  place  was  not

frequented  by  tourists  and  also  the  fact  that  there  were  a  few  waterbodies  on  the  same  route.  The  fact  that  driftwood

collection  would  be  possible  was  the  final  nail  that  put  the  decision  in  Mayaar's  favor.

Gokul  managed  to  get  the  necessary  permissions,  and  had  everything  organised  in  a  very  short  time..Thanks  Gokul

 Check  post  Stop

Mayaar  river  is  about  25  Kms  from  Bhavanisagar  Dam  and  the  roads  to  the  river  is  absolutely  nonexistant.  Only  4X4

vehicles  should  be  seriously  considered.  Two  wheelers  are  not  allowed  into  this  area,  Thanks  to  threat  of  wild

animals.  A  Tata  Sumo  was  organised  and  Gokul  Managed  to  get  a  Innova  guy  who  agreed  to  come  for  the  trip...Have

serious  doubts  on  the  means  that  Gokul  used  to  convince  the  guy  to  use  the  Vehicle..Anyways...The  guys  in  the

Innova(Including  me)  had  a  luxurious  ride  ,  while  the  other  Tata  Sumo  (  We  searched  for  nearly  half  an  hour  to  locate

the  horn!!!)  travellers  had  a  real  rough  ride...Some  were  seen  rearranging  their  bones  after  the  trip  Wink

On  the  road  -  Jampacked....The  Sumo  was  more  or  less  packed  like  this

We  started  from  Coimbatore  at  5  AM..The  party  consisted  of  Myself,  Vignesh,  Ravi,Satish,Deepak,
Dhawal,  Vikas,  Gokul(Joined  at  Bhavanisagar),  Suraj  with  his  Wife  and  Kid,  Varun  and  also  Pandian,  Suraj's
help  from  his  shop.  The  Innova  had  a  driver, while  the  driving  responsibility  for  the  sumo  was
given  to  Vikas  and  Satish.  All  but  satish  and  Dhaval  had  fishy  interests  and  are  found  usually
haunting  the  forums  on  IAH...We  stopped  on  the  way  for  some  tea  as  well...

The  Gang  -  R-L  :  Satish,  Gokul,Vignesh,Pandian,Ravi,Deepak,Varun,Vikas,Suraj,  His  wife  and  Vyas...

 Tea  Stop

Reached  Bhavanisagar  at  7  AM,  having  lost  our  way  somewhere  inbetween,  we  were  on  our  way  by
7:30...It  took  a  good  2  hours  to  reach  our  first  waterbody..around  13  Kms  from  the  Mayaar  river
crossing  to  Thengumarahada.  We  had  Hit  Jackpot...This  spot  was  teeming  with  Driftwood,  Great  Rocks
and  many  varieties  of  fish...  The  water  was  very  shallow...Knee  deep  at  its  maximum...After
collecting  here,  we  spotted  another  water  source(  this  one  from  Moyyar  but  decided  to  try  it  out
later)  but  headed  out  for  the  river  bank...

 First  Stop

 Mosquito  Net  -Our  Primary  Weapon

 First  Bagged  Danio

Monsoons  havent  helped  much  in  this  area..There  were  numerous  dry  riverbeds  on  the  way...But  had  plently  of  rocks  for

 us  to  collect

 Coimbatore  Rocks...

 Dry  River  Bed

Sandwiches,  Thoughtfully  brought  and  prepared  by  Suraj  was  devoured  in  Seconds  and  after  resting
for  about  half  hour  near  the  Moyaar  River  ,

 Lunch  by  the  river

There  was  no  Aquatic  plant  life  anywhere...But  did  see  an  interesting  fern  growing  by  the  river  bank

 Fern  -  ID  needed

Headed  back  to  the  second  spot  which  we  had  planned  to  visit
later.  This  place  again  was  teeming  with  fishes...Gokul  and  Deepak  were  waist  deep  in  water  with
a  large  fishing  net...Without  even  worrying  about  Crocs...Two  Huge  Cros  were  spotted  just  a  Km
away....After  collecting  here,  we  repacked  all  our  fishes  and  decided  to  head  back  home...The  fishes  collected  were
only  as  per  demand  and  only  very  few  fishes  were  finally  taken  from  the  area  and  onto  the  bags. Some  of  the  specimens
were  truly  magnificient...  P.Mahecolas  at  nearly  5+  Inches  and  also  Huge  Barbs,  Barilius  sp  and  Devario  sp  were
 seen

 Spot  No  2

 Men  in  Action

 More  Men  in  Action

Varun  trying  his  hand  with  the  net

Lots  of  driftwood  and  rocks  were  collected  on  the  way  and  there  were  plently  for  all

 Ravi  with  Driftwood

Some  pics  of  the  fishes  caught

 Puntius  -  ID  Required

 Puntius  -  ID  Required  -  P.Mahecola  ?  P.Arulius  ?

Surprisingly  missing  were  the  cichlids  and  loaches...Which  i  hoped  to  catch

The  whole  journey  was  quite  eventful  with  sightings  of  various  birds  and  animals....Spotted  deer,
Black  bucks,  Crocodiles,  peackocks  and  numerous  other  birds  The  weather,  All  this  time  was  very
pleasant  and  supported  us  till  we  had  covered  the  bad  roads...Then  started  a  heavy  downpour

We  reached  Bhavanisagar  by  5  PM  and  we  refuelled  ourselves  with  fresly  fried  E.Suratensis,  Catla  catla
and  Oreochromis  Mossambicus. We  shared  the  booty  with  Gokul  at  Bhavani  and  we  went  seperate  ways  ...each
carrying  a  happy  load  of  fish,  driftwood  and  rocks

 Bhavanisagar  Dam

Highlight  of  the  trip  :  Not  a  Single  Tilapia  was  found  ....Yipee!
